@stargazer who on here underrates Whitelock? Point out the heretics so that we may burn them
I am already sure he and BBBR are, by far and away the two best AB locks i have seen play. And up there with the best of the modern era. We're blessed to have them both at the same time.
It's not so much what people say on the fern; it's more the fact that he's often not mentioned at all when reviewing a game. I think it also becomes clear from the votes in many games. If he wasn't underrated, he'd have had more votes.
That's fucking stupid. And pretty needy. Praise him or you hate him. Jesus.
Underrated doesn't mean hated...
Not constantly sucking him off doesn't mean underrated
I think you'll find in this case that's exactly what it means.

How?

@mariner4life he should be constantly sucked off.

Two of them are much maligned on here and two of them didn't have great seasons by their own high standards.
Consistency is one of the main criticisms of SBW and McKenzie and hydros table kind of points to that.
McKenzie polled more than 6 votes only twice, including 7 total votes on the EOYT. However those two games he was MoTM. Feast or famine. Less pronounced, but similar thing with SBW including 7 votes I can only assume were sarcastic in the 2nd Lions test.
Two pretty interesting things that I had not considered until look at the table.
Coles was significantly reduced upon his return - he was a perennial top 3 candidate when fit and firing - most votes were 4 this year.
Most thought Barrett's World Player of the Year was a bit of a stretch - but that just shows how much. Possibly the strangest winner of an award with a history of strange winners.
-
@mariner4life I'd actually say he's often overlooked, especially if everyone's crush retallick is playing.
Edit: I mean overlooked instead of Underrated.

that's the issue though isn't it - if Retallick shines, it's hard to pick two locks in the MOTM voting when there are usually major contributions elsewhere. You see how he gets recognised when Retallick isn't there.
Whitelock's steal against the Saffer lineout in 2015 was one of the moments of the semi. What a player.

For me Sam Whitelock is a world class lock.
But Brodie Retallick has a physical presence on the field that is a whole step up.
I would swap Whitelock out for Etzebeth or a couple of the Lions locks and think it was more or less evens. No way with Retallick.

Maybe we need to provide this table to the judges prior to voting, it would me the most accurate measure available.
BB stats look even worse when you think he started 13 games.
Looking at averages for games started Cane had an average of 24.54, BBR 21.12, Ioane 18.72 Whitelock 11.83, SBW 8.90, BB 5.76

Good stuff Hydro. Was it the same number of overall votes each time or were there minor/major deviations?

They each have different strengths. BBBR is more a power lock, Whitelock better aerially. Brodie great TH scrummager, Sam excellent LH. They are superb complements for each other. Combo best AB one in 46 years of watching.

Ian Jones and Gary Whetton perhaps. We just didn't know it at the time because it was short lived.
Gary Whetton was well below his best when Ian Jones came along. He was a disgrace in the 91 World Cup.
Jones and Brooke a far better combo

I wouldn't swap either for anyone.

@nepia see I'd say there is nothing between the 2, if anything, I'd have SW shading BBBR.
I'd say the two locks are both damn good but Sam is more consistent and BBBR can do more freaky athletic things.
Have noticed Sam can choose key moments from last RWC on at least to make match-turning heroic acts, but doesn't have BBBR's monstering athleticism when in that purple patch..
