Most thought Barrett's World Player of the Year was a bit of a stretch - but that just shows how much. Possibly the strangest winner of an award with a history of strange winners.

Maybe we need to provide this table to the judges prior to voting, it would me the most accurate measure available.

BB stats look even worse when you think he started 13 games.

Looking at averages for games started Cane had an average of 24.54, BBR 21.12, Ioane 18.72 Whitelock 11.83, SBW 8.90, BB 5.76

Good stuff Hydro. Was it the same number of overall votes each time or were there minor/major deviations?

For me Sam Whitelock is a world class lock.

But Brodie Retallick has a physical presence on the field that is a whole step up.

I would swap Whitelock out for Etzebeth or a couple of the Lions locks and think it was more or less evens. No way with Retallick.

They each have different strengths. BBBR is more a power lock, Whitelock better aerially. Brodie great TH scrummager, Sam excellent LH. They are superb complements for each other. Combo best AB one in 46 years of watching.

    @pakman

Ian Jones and Gary Whetton perhaps. We just didn't know it at the time because it was short lived.

Gary Whetton was well below his best when Ian Jones came along. He was a disgrace in the 91 World Cup.

Jones and Brooke a far better combo

I wouldn't swap either for anyone.

I see the not so underrated Sam Whitelock has been nominated for the Kel Tremain award.

Underrated on the fern. Not when it comes to the award that matters.

@nepia see I'd say there is nothing between the 2, if anything, I'd have SW shading BBBR.

I'd say the two locks are both damn good but Sam is more consistent and BBBR can do more freaky athletic things.
Have noticed Sam can choose key moments from last RWC on at least to make match-turning heroic acts, but doesn't have BBBR's monstering athleticism when in that purple patch..

I don't remember who asked in which thread for footage of Sam Whitelock having his head and beard shaved, but here you can see it happening. No clear view of the final result though. Maybe one of the other media will post a better video later.

At least Sam's hair will grow back, unlike his older brothers.

TSF is boring place in that period between the finish of the EOYT and the start of Super rugby each year.
Unless you are into comparing the average of some cricketer from the 1940's with one from the 1970's that is.

On the contrary. TSF comes into its own during the cricket season.

    Not entirely true.

I rate him very highly as an average player.
