Been thinking about this.
I suspect Barnes had to put something controversial like the NZ stuff in to try and make it vaguely interesting.
An autobiography about refereeing? Good god.
I literally don’t care one iota about his life story. At least Owens is clearly an interesting and entertaining fellow.
Barnes? Yawn.

The All Blacks were in a pretty poor state going into 1987.
We had the high court injunction in 85, rebel tour in 86, losing to Australia at home, then beaten up in France.
There was probably 3 teams that could have won the RWC in the first tournament and you are right, the international game wasn’t that great. I suppose that’s why no one got within 20 points of us. The next 3 years was a golden period for the ABs too.

You would expect better from someone of Henry’s standing.
And you'd expect better refereeing in a RWC 1/4 Final.
I'm all in favour of traditional rugby values of respect to the Ref, the opposition and what happens on the field stays on the field and all that stuff. I also applaud WR's attempts to call out the Neanderthals who abuse Refs on social media,
But it's also a 2-way thing and when Refs fuck up royally (I'm talking to you Carley) there needs to be a better, more open and honest way of dealing with it than we have at the moment. The stakes are just too high to simply ignore the problem.
-
I agree with all you say and there are times where a guy is out of his depth but came good ie Barnes 2007 and there are times where you think, when will this guy ever come good ie Carley whenever.
Barnes for me is one of the better refs of the last ten years or so. Not without his faults and occasionally making a real howler, but that is most refs. He’s not the best, but nor is he the single reason that NZ haven’t won 12 out of the last 10 world cups.

Wales international players got tuned up by munters from Levin ?
Fuck me, it doesn’t get worse than that.
They genuinely were mate, I was gobsmacked watching it.

2007 for me was tough. A huge game, and for whatever reason they picked the most inexperienced ref being considered, instead of picking the best ref available. And we all know what happened then. A decision or two is rub of the green. Swallowing one's whistle for 60 minutes, with eye popping stats like that, baffling

I really doubt that anyone has ever said that he was, or even suggested it. Where did that come from?
Some even say that he is the reason we won the next two (personally I don't believe that shit).
It has been said that he was reason that we were knocked out in 2007 though, which I think is a very valid comment.

A major reason, not the only one, but quite the biggest

What's the deal with that last comment? Who has even insinuated that? Ultimately he fůcked up big time and cost us the 2007 QF and any chance at winning the thing (see I didn't suggest we were a sure thing). But I guess it's easy to just shrug shoulders when you weren't on the receiving end.

Apologies. Posting while drunk and a bit pissed off is not a good mix.

@Catogrande nonsense, drunk and pissed off is exactly how you should be posting on here

Wasn't having a pop at Barnes. Like you, I think Barnes became an excellent ref and I have no problems with the way he reffed the final.
My beef is with the way authorities change guidelines every few games making refereeing difficult, provide almost zero openness or feedback on refereeing quality and then express surprise and shock when confidence in refereeing falls away. It's becoming an open sore.
-
What is depressing is that there were no real professional consequences for his shocking 2007 qf refereeing. Rugby is way behind soccer and cricket in the way they maintain basic officiating standards. Perhaps World Rugby should have referees perform under promotion-relegation conditions. If your average number of refereeing errors exceeds a certain mark in your last say 3 or 5 tests, you get relegated to officiating club level or whatever the level down is. Of course, make fewer errors and you could gain promotion back to level. Idk. Just an idea.
Also, get Graham Henry to
tally the errors. 😉 -

No problem. I figured as much, which I only implied that you were being a dickhead rather than actually calling you one (which you normally aren't)

Now Tom Foley has also been subjected to online death threats to himself and his family. World rugby saying they have recorded over 2,000 direct threats against match officials in recent weeks.
