I don’t think he had a bad game in the final by the way.
Bigger issues were the outstanding South African defence and goalkicking and the All Blacks not quite being able to take their chances.
Im thankful that he's retired
His reffing in the final (in part due to his dreadful assistants) was so bad I stopped watching the test. For the first time ever.

Listening to various pods featuring Barnes flogging his book, the impression is that he isn't bitter, got some things wrong and is a bit of a self promoter. Now getting rich off his book. Fair play to him, he hasn't let the haters get to him. Somehow I expected more "depth" of character.

might be a little harsh to judge someone as a self promoter...based of what you heard from them on a literal publicity tour for their book...thats kind of what anyone would come across like in that situation

@Kiwiwomble I suppose that's true. Maybe I should read the book

We talked about 2007 being the best squad to go to a World Cup.
87, like 95, was fully of young players yet to make a mark on international rugby. 2007 were dominant for 2 years prior.
87 was the most dominant side at a World Cup. No team got within 20 points of them. And they ushered in modern rugbyđź‘Ť
Was never sure if we had a great team or the rest of world was pretty crap Grubs. I wandered up to Playford Park and watched Wales who were having a training run on way to Wellington. Some of the local boys put up some oppsition for scrum practice etc, including a couple of Wanerers front rowers and Athletic 'B's hooker, Quinnel who was coaching the Welsh forwards actually told them to lay off a bit as they were starting to give them grief. World rugby was pretty poor late 80s, ABs just turned up and trotted out and won as a matter of course.
Did have some good refs then though, Fitzgerald from Aus I always thought was good, Norling, Hawke etc were all good refs. Mind you we didn't have constant replays etc to ruin games. -

He's shitty about Henry and GOAT questioning his ethics and his ability in that game
He goes back down in my estimation purely on point 1 aloneHave a look at the law company Squire Patton Boggs that he works for and their um interesting record and clients...

Been thinking about this.
I suspect Barnes had to put something controversial like the NZ stuff in to try and make it vaguely interesting.
An autobiography about refereeing? Good god.
I literally don’t care one iota about his life story. At least Owens is clearly an interesting and entertaining fellow.
Barnes? Yawn.

The All Blacks were in a pretty poor state going into 1987.
We had the high court injunction in 85, rebel tour in 86, losing to Australia at home, then beaten up in France.
There was probably 3 teams that could have won the RWC in the first tournament and you are right, the international game wasn’t that great. I suppose that’s why no one got within 20 points of us. The next 3 years was a golden period for the ABs too.

You would expect better from someone of Henry’s standing.
And you'd expect better refereeing in a RWC 1/4 Final.
I'm all in favour of traditional rugby values of respect to the Ref, the opposition and what happens on the field stays on the field and all that stuff. I also applaud WR's attempts to call out the Neanderthals who abuse Refs on social media,
But it's also a 2-way thing and when Refs fuck up royally (I'm talking to you Carley) there needs to be a better, more open and honest way of dealing with it than we have at the moment. The stakes are just too high to simply ignore the problem.
-
I agree with all you say and there are times where a guy is out of his depth but came good ie Barnes 2007 and there are times where you think, when will this guy ever come good ie Carley whenever.
Barnes for me is one of the better refs of the last ten years or so. Not without his faults and occasionally making a real howler, but that is most refs. He’s not the best, but nor is he the single reason that NZ haven’t won 12 out of the last 10 world cups.

2007 for me was tough. A huge game, and for whatever reason they picked the most inexperienced ref being considered, instead of picking the best ref available. And we all know what happened then. A decision or two is rub of the green. Swallowing one's whistle for 60 minutes, with eye popping stats like that, baffling

I really doubt that anyone has ever said that he was, or even suggested it. Where did that come from?
Some even say that he is the reason we won the next two (personally I don't believe that shit).
It has been said that he was reason that we were knocked out in 2007 though, which I think is a very valid comment.
