Therefore - the most important thing, avoiding 3 genuine contenders in the same pool - is almost a given. 2011 was a massive anomaly.

The Poms would like to mention (or probably forget) 2015.

    Shit. I meant 2015.
That's it... that's the excuse... being sober Just. Doesn't. Work. To the fridge...

I still don't know why rugby needs to do this so far in advance when you look at when FIFA finalises pools and draws.

Because unlike the FIFA WC in the RWC the schedule dictates the venues. With limitless demand Brazil can build a stadium in the middle of the jungle for 5 fixtures with unknown teams and have them all sell out immediately. Not even close for RWC they need to know the fixtures before they set the venues and schedule. No use having Georgia vs Kenya at Stade De France and ABs vs Wales in Pau.

Official tour groups are a big revenue source and if you are teeing up to go in 2023 then you are making the call in 2021.

@rotated I still don't believe WR needs to make these decisions 3 years before the tournament starts. If they are going to use rankings to assign teams to bands/groups at least make them relevant.

Those are the ranking from the end of last year, too. I'd fucking laugh if one pool had teams ranked first, second, and third in it at the time of the tournament. It's just about possible

Which one of Scotland, Argentina, Fiji, Italy - do you think is "just about possible" to get to 3rd in the world?
Has Jaguars4Real (or whatever that nutjob's name was) come back and hijacked your account?

But yeah, I kinda get the sentiment. Although... in rugby, I've never understood the wailing and gnashing of teeth around this. In reality - there's less than 8 teams truly likely to win the thing... and they would only very, very rarely drop out of the top-8 rankings. Therefore - the most important thing, avoiding 3 genuine contenders in the same pool - is almost a given. 2011 was a massive anomaly.

The mighty Scots of course. Those other teams suck arse.

Thought you’d want to avoid Fiji? Or Samoa come to that. 🎣

Draw in a couple of weeks time.

    2023-Draw-Timezone-map-EN-.jpg

The teams in each band will be randomly drawn to determine the pools they go into, the first drawn being placed in Pool A, the second in Pool B, the third in Pool C and the fourth in Pool D. The first band to be drawn will be five, with the top four seeds the last to be drawn.

Looks lopsided to me with France in second tier and Wales in top one. Within 12 months France may be world number 1. Wales third tier currently.

Yeah, and why these idiots shouldn't be doing it three years out.
A lot changes in a year, let alone three. Just a change of coach can drop you down the rankings in a hurry.

It highlights that too much weighting goes on RWC placings, when using the rankings to determine bands 3 years out from the next RWC.

The draw will take place at 12:30 pm CET today at the Palais Brongniart in Paris.

    timezones_noplacenames_wide.jpg

Rugby World Cup France 2023 will be contested by 20 teams, of which 12 are directly qualified by virtue of a top-three place in their respective Rugby World Cup 2019 pools. These teams will be seeded based on World Rugby Men's Rankings as of 1 January, 2020 and placed into three bands of four teams (bands one, two and three).

The remaining eight teams will come through the regional qualification process and will be allocated into bands four and five based on relative strength. Except for France (Band 2) which will be drawn first as host country, all teams in each band will be randomly drawn to determine the pools they go into, the first drawn being placed in Pool A, the second in Pool B, the third in Pool C and the fourth in Pool D. The first band to be drawn will be five, with the top four seeds in band one last.

The match schedule, with date, location and time of all games will be announced towards the end of February 2021.

@Bones so we get France in our pool and then I assume either Sth Africa or Ireland in quarters (if draw in Feb aligns with what they did for Japan 2019).

Dream pool for English rugby scribes. Up against their two favourites.

So we know what the opening game is going to be ... Hosts versing the biggest draw cards ...

Or do they go hosts verse a guaranteed win (I've started the count down on the hilarious Foster post).
