So Wales, Australia & Fiji in one pool

Thought you’d want to avoid Fiji? Or Samoa come to that. 🎣

Draw in a couple of weeks time.

    2023-Draw-Timezone-map-EN-.jpg

The teams in each band will be randomly drawn to determine the pools they go into, the first drawn being placed in Pool A, the second in Pool B, the third in Pool C and the fourth in Pool D. The first band to be drawn will be five, with the top four seeds the last to be drawn.

Looks lopsided to me with France in second tier and Wales in top one. Within 12 months France may be world number 1. Wales third tier currently.

Yeah, and why these idiots shouldn't be doing it three years out.
A lot changes in a year, let alone three. Just a change of coach can drop you down the rankings in a hurry.

It highlights that too much weighting goes on RWC placings, when using the rankings to determine bands 3 years out from the next RWC.

The draw will take place at 12:30 pm CET today at the Palais Brongniart in Paris.

    timezones_noplacenames_wide.jpg

Rugby World Cup France 2023 will be contested by 20 teams, of which 12 are directly qualified by virtue of a top-three place in their respective Rugby World Cup 2019 pools. These teams will be seeded based on World Rugby Men's Rankings as of 1 January, 2020 and placed into three bands of four teams (bands one, two and three).

The remaining eight teams will come through the regional qualification process and will be allocated into bands four and five based on relative strength. Except for France (Band 2) which will be drawn first as host country, all teams in each band will be randomly drawn to determine the pools they go into, the first drawn being placed in Pool A, the second in Pool B, the third in Pool C and the fourth in Pool D. The first band to be drawn will be five, with the top four seeds in band one last.

The match schedule, with date, location and time of all games will be announced towards the end of February 2021.

@Bones so we get France in our pool and then I assume either Sth Africa or Ireland in quarters (if draw in Feb aligns with what they did for Japan 2019).

Dream pool for English rugby scribes. Up against their two favourites.

So we know what the opening game is going to be ... Hosts versing the biggest draw cards ...

Or do they go hosts verse a guaranteed win (I've started the count down on the hilarious Foster post).

I think pool A Quarter Finals are vs Pool B. So NZ will need to beat France in pool play to avoid the Boks in the Quarters!

Pretty tough alright! France looking seriously awesome at the moment. And at home.

NZ looking seriously shit at the moment. And not at home.

A heavily hyped France going into a game at home against the ABs rarely turns out well for France.

So much water left to run under the bridge, at this stage in the last cycle we had just put 50 points on the Boks in Durban.

@MajorRage On another forum I read that If NZ finish second in the pool and then can sneak past the Boks then their S/F should be against the winner of a likely Q/F between Argentina and Oz. Don't know if that is accurate but if so would that be an easier path to the final than an Ireland Q/F then likely England S/F ?

Debateable. Ireland is certainly weaker based on most recent form for either team. Though that may not mean a whole lot come 2023.

@mofitzy_ Yeah Ireland without Sexton and probably Murray won't be the same team as they were a few years ago. We have an ok draw, a much better draw than SA. They have an incredibly tough quarters no matter how they perform in their group. Looks like their RWC luck has finally run out.
