A few random thoughts:
- it's pretty clear we don't have the depth to rest any of our top players, particularly A Smith and Coles. Fair enough that we did but shit some of the next tier down got exposed.
- TJP's form has gone the same way Cowan's did, right off a fucking cliff and he's become a liability. He's always been inconsistent, showing glimpses of being world class, but has never able to put back to back performances together. It just seems to be consistently bad now. Weber is a fucking liability as well though so we definitely have a gap to fill there.
- we also really need Clarke to fill a gap on the wing, and Sotutu to fill a gap at 8. Both rookies but both specialists and have oodles of class.
- Ardie was really good, but it's so blindingly obvious he isn't an 8 and he's best used from the bench wrecking havoc at the end of the match.
- midfield didn't work and I didn't really think it would. JG, ALB and Rieko are our first choice covering 12 and 13 IMO. Rieko probably still off the bench until he really finds his feet at centre at test level.
- Akira was fucking awesome, we actually lost a lot of shape when he went off. His work rate was high and he was super effective in contact. Wobs must have been extremely pleased to see the back of him after the red.
- both reds were pretty silly. Sure you can tell players to just go low, but then you basically take the dominant tackle out of the game. At the end of the day rugby is a contact sport and you're going to get some accidental contact to the head every now and then. Red carding players for that is completely over the top and ruins the spectacle.
- fucking SB and that dumb as fuck YC. I was calling for a red as it was that fucking idiotic. That's the kind of play that makes you think he can't be trusted in a big test.
- BB was not good, but I'm really not sure how RM would have gone given the pile of shit that was served up. Jury still out but RM/BB 10/15 combo has had the most success so far.
Agree with all of this and will add...
-
Nick Berry made it the referee show very early on - along with some selective decisions at times.
-
The AB-collectively played dumb. Headless chooks, passes going to ground, combo's/timing not quite there.
-
Beaudy will get a clip in the media, but I don't think having RM would've made a difference. BB did some good things, Jordie was still available to be a second playmaker & kicker. BB tackled hard, made metres post contact, tried hard.
-
I would've subbed off Sevu Reece instead of Akira in hindsight - the game became attritional in the end - Akira would've offered more plus had we know Australia would lose their 6, it would've made that forward battle interesting.
-
I also blame Australia for being Australia. Never give those fluffy bunnies a chance.
Yeah I agree.
Barretts:
Beaudy wasn't a difference maker, and I doubt that RM would've done better. Mo'unga was awesome behind an utterly dominant pack last time, beaudy probably would've been too
Scott wasn't that bad, but his brain fart lost the game. Unlike Jordie he didn't seem to have got that out of his game
Jordie was fine, just nothing bigArdie was a machine, and if we'd dropped Reese (who was a disaster) rather than Akira, I think we would've dominated the Ozzies again. Game is won up front FFS, take off a back. Esp once the red to Oz
"11 carries ✅
51 metres ✅
13 tackles ✅
2 lineout takes ✅
2 clean breaks, 5 defenders beaten ✅
Ardie Savea was simply immense in Brisbane"TJ was the other disaster. He's been awesome for the canes, but is a liability with his concentration on playing the ref and the opposition, rather than the game. At the Canes he has to do more as the senior guy, at the abs he needs to concentrate on his core role. He doesn't
The refs and home town replays were really bad.
Foster failed as a coach who can react. His substitutions were appalling, and with clever subs I think we could've overcome all there other crap to squeek a win.
Same as above, shame on cane and beaudy for not going back to what was working once it was 14 each. On field leadership was crap. Cane is a great follow me leader, but still hasn't shown anything more. Not taking the three after the yellow was stupid. There was time too get back down there again. Get blue heads on you dick heads. Coaches should have brought everyone back on line at half time, another coaching fail
Bye bye Reese and TJ, I really hope, and some of these 23 put onto the 'only in a huge fucking emergency or against a lower tier nation' list. Laumape, for ex
-
I guess a positive from that is it must give Foster a clearer idea who his top team is, or damn well should.
Sure some needed a rest but they should have been managed better in the first 3 to avoid duch wholesale changes in that one.

Just watch him big up Reese cos he made most metres, breaks and tackles broken. He'll forget the dozens of shit decisions and executions!
-
@taniwharugby didn't they have a rest after game 2?
-
Right well, congrats Aussie. When the game finished I was starting to feel happy for the Aussies, you could clearly see they were stoked, beaming smiles and Hooper pulling funny faces... then they cut to Nic White and any good sentiment disappeared.
Two things I'm at odds with most others on it seems. No complaints about the ref and Aoane wasn't all that stand out. Red cards were borderline but fair, both players put themselves in the spotlight and suffered... imagine how good Ofa's tackle would have been if he lined up below the chest (and didn't turn his head away from the collision). Aoane was good for a guy on debut but the superlatives being thrown his way seem way over the top. Absolutely gutted for him to suffer for Ofa's dumb play and certainly something to build on.
Perenara had a couple of good patches, but it's really telling that I'm recognising his good patches as the periods of play where a halfback passed fairly accurately to people. A halfback. He's been building to this performance (I still can't believe the praise he got after bled 2).
So on that, I find it really hard to fault BB (and to a lesser extent Laumape). When you're reliant on that shitshow at halfback you're never going to be on a winner.
Scott Barrett you fucken moron. What on earth makes you even think to do something so outrageously stupid?
Is there a certain number of players from each side that have to share first/last names?

Overall, the lack of mental strength is a concern for me. We keep making poor decisions - it feels like 07 could creep up again (although we aren't as dominant as that side)
It’s hard to compare at this stage given we are only a season after the last RWC, what we will be like in 2023.
Unless you are comparing last night to 2004 when we lost at Ellis Park and the Boks ran up what seemed like a cricket score against us?

Nope, I've been concerned since the Lions tour to be honest. Lions 1 was dominant, but SBW had a brain fart in 2, and then we choked in a few areas in 3. Since then we struggled with the Irish in Chicago, and just didn't show up in RWC SF last year, or Bled 1, or Bled 4. It's becoming a pattern I think.
-
Oh yeah and what the actual fuck. Perenara having one of the worst games an AB has played in years AND YOU FUCKEN LEAVE HIM ON THE WHOLE GAME. Were the Aussies hotboxing our coaches box?
While I'm on it, did I see Grace packing down at the last scrum? What an absolute cu nt move, sending a kid on for his debut to pack a scrum in a losing match after time is up.
Lastly, seems we overloaded on Barretts. Not enough Barrett juice to cover all 3. Looks like 2 is the limit.

I said exactly the same thing to the people I was watching the game with.
Losing Akira also meant Grace became a spare part on the bench because Cane and Savea weren't going to be replaced early.
-
Why is Beauden getting a pass? World player of the year, senior all black back in his preferred position, and we are happy to accept that pile of shit and blame the forwards? They weren't the ones who decided on the defensive cross kick with no overlap for example.

Re TJP, it really was odd that they didn't sub him. I would even have supported him being pulled and Dmac taking over at 9 😨

Will be interesting to see what any post-match judiciary process does with the cards.
I think we'll see suspensions in the low end at worst, reduced for being good chaps of outstanding character and early guilty pleas, written apologies etc
Are suspensions mandatory for reds these days? Seems odd, would have thought missing 70 mins of a game would be sufficient punishment

No they aren't - an appearance in front of the judiciary is tho. And your point is basically what I was trying to get at (it was 58 minutes for Ofa, 47 minutes for Swinton) in that they'll put a little black mark on their records and probably reduce it to a warning.
Neither man will want to appear again in the next year or two or the "good guy in a bad situation" defence won't cover it.
DISCLAIMER: this is the judiciary so ...

Actually read other posts. He's definitely not getting a pass. Thing is that the number 9 had a shocker for the ages. Also bit difficult to blame BB for the forwards stuffing up the lineout at the end of the first half. We score then we probably win.
