Ireland v NZ - Chicago Showdown & Dublin Duel
-
I know anyone after Richie was going to have the biggest shoes ever to fill, but I just don't know about Read as a captain. Great, great player in the past, but sometimes he just seems to go missing. Today in the first half the ABs were running about like headless chooks, and even Read himself was on the end of individual as well as team warnings. Although to be fair, the rest of the leadership team weren't exactly stepping up.

He's been captain for less than a full season, he has lessons to learn just as all past captains have to.
I can think of very shaky moments when McCaw, Tana, Thorne, Blackadder, Taine, even Fitzy.
The key will be how they respond.

Just saw the highlights. Some of those tries were soft as a bitch.
Full credit to Ireland, they won this and nothing can take that away from them. But damn that looked like a pedestrian farking ab team. Those lapses would have been unthinkable during the RC.
I'm seriously pissed off with this. I think they've been taking the piss a bit in the past few years and now have finally been bitten on the arse.
Teams like Ireland deserve respect. I don't think they showed them much beforehand and paid the price.

I think the centre pairing of Crotty with Moala is where I started thinking we are taking the Irish too lightly. Crotty would have to be classed as the Creator or playmaker of the 2 and that is hardly his strength. Add that to 2 big wingers (no 2nd fullback role) and it looks like we planned on running through the Irish who are always decent defenders.
ALB would have made alot of difference to that backline to take some pressure off Barratt.
Think Irish still had that win in them though -

i am gutted about this. you get another chance in 4 years at a world cup, but you never get this record back.
Yeah from that point of view it is a pretty crappy result.

Well done to the paddies, they joined two pretty exclusive clubs today-they got their first win and put 40 on us which only a few teams have ever managed.
Haven't seen the game, not sure I want to.Have we done a roll call of our Irish regulars? Pot Hale seems ok but I imagine NH fan has a blood alcohol level that would put Boris Yeltsin on his birthday to shame.
We both had our customary two pints and headed home.

@Crash Agreed - I woke up, remembered, and muttered "Fucking IRELAND" again.
Also - I realised that I have to take my share of the blame... I was drinking Scottish beer, which was probably a little too close to supporting celts. I just didn't bloody think. -
I think that's what I want to hear, that they are hurting. I think it's nice to be humble and acknowledge the Irish but I want them to be hurting and wanting to give the performance of a lifetime in two weeks with the best 23 we can muster.
Two other things I forgot to mention. First game I can remember in years were the All Blaks were thoroughly outplayed at kick-off. Sexton put huge pressure on ABs and ABs never seemed to compete on their kick-offs.
Other problem I have is Savea, he may have two or three sensational moments in a game and he may not. But always seems to have a mixed bag of dropped balls, dying with the ball and being bundled into touch. When he has those top moments Hansen wants to pat him self on the back but when it is the mixed bag of mediocrity we don't hear anything.

not to mention with the 2 wings we had, we were totally dominated in the air as well, think pretty much every aspect of that game we were outplayed yesterday, some comes down to the players we had out there, some to the errors we made, but mostly cos the Irish played the game of their lives.

. I'm not sure we would have beaten Ireland with a full strength team either.
Just starting with two locks and the in form HB would have been enough. And why didn't ALB start or at least make the reserves. NZ have the talent but dumb selections cost us this game. Such a shame.
-
So I earlier posited the difficulty of choosing between a Wallaby win at Eden Park for the first time in decades, or a first-ever win for Ireland over the ABs.
Gotta say, I reckon this is the better option. Well done Ireland. Monkey off the back and all that.
Now, if you could just decide to have an off day against us in a couple of weeks

Gotta agree that we opened the door at least. Having our locks out always made me nervous, playing that MF combo on top of it even more so. No Dagg as well and we played to the Irish strengths. I would have thought playing the rest of the first choice team would have been the way to go. The others could always have played against Italy

I expect some will take this as arrogance....

Barrets goal kicking was ropey again. T
I thought he only missed one
Correct. He missed one of four conversion attempts. His penalty kick was successful, too, so he got 4 out of 5.
I think people think his goal kicking wasn't good, because it was the first kick he missed and because they expected his goal kicking to be bad after the last few games.
