So how long was Kaino the newbie to god? Hopefully simlar with Akira!

He played in that Baabaas match in late 2004. In and (mostly) out of AB squads after that and heavily criticised.

He didn't nail an AB spot until 2008 at 25 years old

You could make comparisons to Ioane. Picked in a non Test AB side 3 years ago. He's now 25

Both Ioane and Frizell (26) are both at that stage of their careers

I remember reading a piece about Kaino’s disappointment of missing out on the 2005 AB squad to play the Lions. Got a shot on that EOYT in 06 when Henry took a big squad I believe.

Then the disappointment of missing the 07 RWC squad (not that he missed much...). A couple of players go OS and the time was his to shine and land that spot in 08.

Must say, reading that team was a nice wee surprise. Looking forward to seeing the "challengers" get stuck in.
A tick in the column for Fozzie.

Personally I don't think the ABs have properly replaced TKB when he left in 2015. There was a reason TKB was the preferred backup in the 2015 RWC.

TKB was certainly much less inclined towards brainfarts than TJP, but damn he was useless on attack. Obviously served his purpose and did the job he needed to do, but I'd want that reserve 9 to take it up a notch. TJP certainly has enough talent but for whatever reason can't stop acting like a complete tool at the worst possible moments.

You'd think after all these years he'd have learnt to tone it down a bit, but clearly he's a fucking idiot who needs to be jettisoned.

@junior alrighty, mate. You keep telling yourself that.

I don’t need to because everyone with eye sight keeps telling me too!

There’s no doubt he’s been good for the Canes but his AB performances have been worse than below par

No not really. I want him to do well, like I want all our players to do well. But he’s not up to it and he’s been given ample opportunity to improve but hasn’t- in fact he’s got worse.

@junior bullshit, he’s added plenty off the bench for the ABs and still does. One bad game doesn’t change that.

Akira has the skills and physique to be our next Kaino, and it appears that he's had an attidtude adjustment - I really hope it all clicks

What sort of shape is he in nowadays ?

With both Ioanes starting the potential for dickheadishness is huge

It is clear to me both Ioane boys used lockdown and this season to get into shape, they both look as fit as they did in the Sevens days. There was a shot of Akira with top off in changing rooms and he looked very fit.

    Shot of Akira in Gym
    akira.jpg

Holy shit! I never realised how tall Akira was. Towering over Ardie in that pic.

Awesome to see Akira Ioane there after toiling away for years at domestic level. He certainly deserves his start and I hope it's the first of many.

Just in case anyone missed his chat with Savea on Youtube earlier in the year, looks like he battled some demons mentally which impacted his rugby. To his credit it appears as if 2020 has been a rebuilding which has led to his start. I hope he goes well.

Perhaps someone slipped some bacon in his fry up this morning or turned the Pearl Jam up too loud ?

Akira Ioane has the physical potential to be absolute legendary All Black.
The fact he has suffered prior to getting in here will hopefully make him turn out to be a better AB in the long term than if had been promoted a few years back.
    Let's hope so!!!!
