RWC Week 5: All Blacks v Uruguay
-
What was Newells injury? I feel for poor Lomax, has been in such good form, this just wasn't the tournament for him.
-
LF can't be in the starting team. On defence he turns slower than the QE2 and then gets outpaced by Vaa'i on the chase back.

@nostrildamus Jamie Joseph?
Nooohh, please no!
He will be just like Deans and Rennie: hamstrung by an incompetent administration and given players who aren't up to it.
Nothing to worry about.
-
@Duluth either that or they call up Moody and use Ofa as a tight-head only.
-
-
Longer:
-
That was a really good performance and a number of players got some important minutes. The Lomax injury is by a mile the biggest negative from that.
DMac was very good again, Roigard did great work cleaning up scrappy ball and is such a threat with ball in hand, and Jordan looked to be getting into some good form with some magical touches.
-
Possibly. I think they'd keep the same squad balance though
Foster's comment:
"It looks like a small strain, we won't know for another 24 hours but he was looking OK"So maybe a false alarm. I hope they don't fuck with the NPC teams and let all the props play

so for those who couldn't watch the match and were foolishly following this thread for the score and overall comments, did any loosies play well? Did EB do anything well?
Pretty happy with all 3 -
Cane was everywhere without really standing out but first to the breakdown wherever it was (side bar was just thinking he's looking a lot more trim than in recent times)
Jacobson usual big front on D. Carried well and always looking to get an offload away in the tackle. Bit of miscommunication clearing ball at base of scrum a couple of times to the half. Right on Canes heels.. I'm sure tackle stats will show them making plenty
Frizzell - couple of decent runs hitting the line at speed, don't really recall seeing too much of him but aggressive on D when he needed to beBlackadder - spilled first touch. one decent run. that's about it

If LF doesn't start next week, he should be on the bench instead of ALB.
pretty unimpressed by him getting skinned on the outside then showing the pace of a president grades prop chasing back and being passed by Whitelock
that was ugly! -
Just watched on delay then read the thread. Geez I see a few things differently to many posters but similar to the TV team
Thought LF and Ofa tried to play themselves out of qf 23 tonight. LF was lazy slow and inaccurate but seemed not to get noticed when he played better in midfield in second half. Ofa still looks awkward to me. Gosh I hope Lomax is OK and Newell too. Tamaiti went well.
For me standout mom was Dmac. Can't believe how many times others messed up when he was in a try scoring position. Really don't think Jordan or BB are the answer at 15. It just has to be Dmac. And he was the best 10 on the park as well as 15. Richie seems to slot back too much so Dmac has to be there to compensate.
Not sure why the haters for Luke J. Both he and Cane were close to the ball and effective all day competing against the best Uruguayan.
Roigard can do better and will learn from today but still looks a big threat. ALB did a lot of good work. Others were remarkably quiet.
Looks OK for QF provided Lomax is OK.

yeh I agree with you.
made our bed with sticking with BB - no idea what fozzie was thinking there, hoping BB of 2015 would come back at some point.. father time says get farked!Roigard was pretty disrupted but shit his pass is inaccurate
ultraslim Williams looking to move into the backline.. looked awesome wide with ball in hand!
-
I still think LF provides a point of difference off the bench. A moment of class could bag us 7 points and get the team thru to a semi …
We need to have a game changer or two off the pine.

@Stargazer said in RWC Week 5: All Blacks v Uruguay:
@chimoaus Didn't look too serious. I just read in one of the media articles that taking him off the field was precautionary.
Yeah it crossed my mind that it was more of a 'tactical sub' than an injury given he came on a bit earlier after the injury to Lomax. He may still be on managed time after coming back from injury.

that was ugly!LF is indeed not the kind of winger who has that explosive speed for the short and sharp runs, but he offers so much more that can't be matched by the other wingers and midfielders. He just has too many upsides to leave him out of the 23 in my opinion.
-
Yip he needs to be on the bench as a point of difference as a winger or mid. That ability to play both should be a factor on its own.
ALB on the bench is safe and tidy but likely won't put fear into opposition D with 20min to go -

The Foster era summed up , awful discipline
It's been shit since 2016/7
Not really. It got bad around the EOYT 2018 and then 2019 was a bit hit and miss. 2020-21 peak poor discipline.

I can see why there would be some criticism of Luke’s game tonight. Thought he looked a bit laboured getting to the ruck. I prefer him at 6 (or 7) than 8 because his back of the scrum work has been scratchy for a while.
His second half was a little better.

Agree about what he offers on the wing but he is barely Super level when he lines up at 13. Not sure I would like him playing at centre for any length of time against the big boys.
-
I thought we had stopped picking slow wingers. So many better choices in the current squad.
-
I havent watched yet (may not)
but based on this, I should, some outstanding performances...
-
@taniwharugby you should. The first quarter from Uruguay is pretty committed
And then we score some cool tries

He's handy in close to the ruck and wins collisions more often than not. That's about all I can think of. He wouldn't be in my 23.

And he's a great ball carrier who is hard to tackle, very strong, has a huge workrate, he's like a winger and loosie in one. To me that's a great example of a power winger, who happens to be pretty handy in the midfield, too.
-
I'm not convinced with any of our options for the 23 jersey (presuming that DMac is 22).
Of the options available I'd probably lean LF and back Jordie to go 80 at 12.

Like I mentioned earlier, I would be very worried if he ended up playing decent minutes at centre in a big game. He has no distribution and he gets caught out in defence at 13. The Crusaders realised that and stuck with Ennor in the midfield and him on the wing.
-
Obviously first minutes, early exchanges etc etc but it is concerning that we always seem to come off 2nd best in this regard. Against teams that can maintain that for a full game then we are in trouble. When that happens not even Dmac or Blackadder can save us.
-
@Rancid-Schnitzel and yet we were fast out of the blocks v Arg and SA earlier in the year, so we can do it, maintaining and backing it up is another story.

It seems crazy to me. He has some talent but he's nowhere near the finished product given how error prone he is, AND he's pissing off after the RWC. Such a waste of a squad space.

I'm a fan but I get the feeling LF could be targeted by the better teams for his lack of "nimbleness" in defense in the current environment. Clarke has a similar problem with added bonus of an inability to be in the right position more often than not. The only two options to start on the wing for a big dance(s) would have to be Jordan and Telea with the current AB "defense system".
-
@Old-Samurai-Jack yeah an accurate kicking team would certainly pressure his turning circle, similarly a team like Ireland with thier disciplined (as in, the whole line is off side ) rush defence would shut his space a bit quicker.

i get what your saying and have been asking to see him play more...but i got really nervous when that Uruguayan winger drops the ball, regathers on the back foot...and then just straight up smokes LF on the outside....i start questioning how much effort he was putting in to get back
-
@Kiwiwomble Yep - and the effort thing applies to his kick chase too.
