Australia v All Blacks - Bled I

@antipodean but seriously, what was it you spotted that might be issues?
To me his positioning defensively and tackling left a lot to be desired. Often he looked uninterested in actually making a tackle - merely grabbing at an attacker and being easily beaten.

Wallabies have beaten ABs in Aus pre-world cup in the last 4 RWC years.
07 - MCG
11 - Suncorp
15 - Homebush
19 - PerthAnd it’s funny that Oz did worst or in the case of 07 equally as bad, as the ABs.
I was at the 07 one , they played McAlister at 13 as a bit of an experiment to see if he could provide cover there, I was sitting behind the posts watching Mortlock turn him inside out.
Dont think he played there again .
I watched that at a rugby club in Canberra and I recall an Aussie former player or coach talking pre-game about how Lucky leads with the shoulder on defence and leaves himself open to be beaten. And sure enough the Evil Wizard exposed it.
Was a strange game and I know many bemoan our second half performances, but that was a Jekyll and Hyde game where we basically dominated in the first half without it looking like we got out of 2nd gear and then we put in a 2nd half where we couldn’t land a shot, looked like we were playing in quick sand.
And yes it was a “famous victory” for the Wallabies…
-
He will be there next year I am sure.
At least he gets a taste of an AB environment which will help him next year when he makes the step up.
I would have like to have seen him get game time but as injury cover for a guy who played at the weekend it wasn’t going to happen for him.
Fingers crossed it doesn’t happen but if there are injuries to the back 3 then he is primed to come into the squad having spent a few weeks with them

Yeah that's the theory, but I have zero confidence in that becoming a reality.
-
This is a great opportunity to see if we can put in 3 top performances in a row and treat this as a final.
Play as close to the top side as possible, with some minimal changes.
Focus on the performance and not get sucked into playing an all out throw the ball around that we sometimes see against Australia.

I went out to their training through the week out at Waverley , hawks ground , and was leaning on the fence watching with my boys , and Shand approached me and we had a good chat ( nice fella ) .
He told me , the boys were pretty fatigued and sore , not sure what team we are going to name , lots of sore bodies he said , after their big win in South Africa a few days before . Going off what he was telling me they seemed a bit flat and knocked about .
I put it down to that . -

Stevenson has been released, so he won't be playing.
All Blacks hopeful Shaun Stevenson will leave the team before their Bledisloe Cup trip to Melbourne in a fortnight, despite impressing in training.
Mafileo is still with the squad though.
Ah Jesus . What a waste.
Foster is an idiot.
Considering the compliments he's publicly given to SS, you wonder if it was Schmidt and/or McLeod who had reservations.
Well I kind of go along with whoever makes decision. I think SS has been bloody good at Super this year, but I not sure I would put him ahead of anyone in team. I think we need to look at how ABs operate the best, seems with 2 2 playmaker game, and without a Havili there I think it really suits us to have either BB or DMac as 15.
-
@Dan54 The 2 playmaker thing has been pretty much shit for the ABs until last weekend. It's a nice idea with a heap of potential upside, but that is the first time it has actually worked with Mounga and Barrett together - so it is a bit weird to say conclusively that is how the ABs operate best.
Despite never actually playing at fullback, Mo'unga is the guy who plays most like a 2nd playmaker. He's always deep, frequently in the second line, often leaves the early plays and short passes to runners and decision-making to others. Beauden is a shoveller who largely looks for opportunities for himself or tries a cross-kick/chip/bomb and gives away too much possession. McKenzie is the guy who actually plays like an attacking 10, flat at the line and looking to put people into gaps.
I don't think they have the guts to bite the bullet, or the time to do it in their usual ultra conservative methodology, but our best side would have McKenzie at 10, and not Barrett at 15. -

@pakman although we just scraped home during the critical second Bledisloe test and that was at Eden Park.
Bledisloe drought over
A few losses in Oz isn't a huge worry after twenty years of Bledisloe retention.

I'd say there would need to be at least 2 injuries for that to happen, you'd think they likely only see him as wing cover, so injuries to 2 or 3 of CC, LF, WJ, BE & MT before they consider him.

If I was Eddie , I’d be trying to take advantage that the abs may just be a tad complacent after being 2-0 up against a team that is 0-2 , not firing warning shots 😁
It is about media attention. Like Cheika, he wants to keep the spotlight on his bullshit rather than the performances.
Yeah get that but I remember before the 2011 wc semi , and some Aussie players , kearns etc taking shots at Nz’s choking etc .
And nick Farjones saying , I think it’s a big mistake before playing Nz giving them motivation, our best victories have come from taking them by surprise against the odds . I always believe it’s best to not poke the bear and try and take them by surprise in the game itself
I think all of that talk has very little to do with what goes on out on the park. There may be a momentary thought of it perhaps during the anthems or the haka, but then the players just settle into their work. They are not thinking about what Eddie (or anyone else for that matter said) almost two weeks out from the match.
Given the break it’s about keeping a waning Oz fan base interested with some coverage.
Yep seems the tickets maybe not selling great, seems the cut price ones alreadt released.
yeah, they didn't sell out Marvel last year (close but not quite) and that was after giving out cheap or free tickets....not sure where they thought another 30-40k people were coming from
-
Interesting to hear BB on the rugby podcast that Schmidt has had a lot of influence on their structure and backplay this season. What was telling was BB said the entire team has buy in to what Schmidt is selling which may suggest in previous years they had doubts about Fozzies masterplan.
-
@chimoaus From EdG.
“We’ve got a really good coaching group, with Joe Schmidt and Jason Ryan, and we just nailed the small things during the week and came up with a really good plan, so when we got to Thursday’s training there were no questions. We knew what the plan was. It comes down to knowing your role and then executing it.”
-
From BBBR
“It’s been a massive focus, and something (assistant coach) Joe [Schmidt] is driving – getting people on our feet and around the ball, so we’re an option. I think [the Boks victory] was a clear example of that, especially in the first 20 when it was good to see the boys just playing.”
There's a themed on where the praise is going, beaudy seemed to mention foster as an after thought on the rugby pod

Damn good atmosphere for 54,000 though. Great night and I was in a section where there weren’t many AB supporters. There was plenty of good banter being thrown my way, until of course I started dancing in the aisle after Jordie scored in the corner and the good will suddenly left 😎
