I don't get the hype surrounding Lakai. Seems average from what I have seen.
You obviously haven’t watched any rugby for about the last half a year. He’s clearly a very good rugby player. At only 19 he’s mature beyond his years.
By the way he’s usually an 8, not a 7.
I said he's overhyped but I didn't realise he was only 19 when I made that comment. Some of the chat is over the top though, Stephen Donald said on SENZ the other day that he could be one of NZ's greatest ever players. Based on what?
Based on the fact he’s dominating men at 19 years old and still isn’t the finished product is pretty impressive. I saw him in Levin at the pre season game between the Hurricanes vs Crusaders, he’s probably the most physically gifted human being I’ve seen in person since Jonah Lomu. This kid is a beast, he’s already won the Ranfurly Shield and an NPC. I can’t wait to see what he achieves throughout his career, whether that be as an 8 or a 7.

While I'm happy the Canes got a very good win, I'm not happy to see MP trashed this way. I really want them to do well. Maybe they need another coach, who can get more out of his players. One important thing in which they haven't succeeded thus far is luring the big guns back from Europe and Japan. It would make a heck of a difference if they could field players like Ben Tameifuna, Charles Piutau and Malakai Fekitoa (etc). The money overseas is too good, I guess.
Yup, there is no reason why those guys go from (in some cases) a million a year to 50k. Any MP player that comes good will instantly get a contract in NH, as there is no reason for them to stay in SR. They'll still get picked for country and also paid a ton more
-
@Canes4life Moana Pacifika are shite. Basically a home for retirees or blokes waiting to be pinched by the ABs or northern hemisphere.

Surely their best players would get a lot more than 50k. But agree it would still be a lot less than the best in the NH or Japan get

Why would the ABs want to pick up players you consider are shite?
Just finished watching the full replay and there was some lovely stuff from the Hurricanes. Even the best of teams wouldn’t have been able to stop some of those onslaughts.
I just want to make a shoutout to Billy Proctor, he’s been rock solid all year for us at centre and he once again showed that he’s highly capable on both sides of the ball. He’s always been a solid defender but his distribution game has improved immensely over the last year. Arguably the top performing centre in NZ rugby to start the year. Probably deserves a rest next week though.
-
@Canes4life Agree about Proctor. He has looked slick at centre. I'd also be interested to to see how the partnership with Sullivan progresses.

I don’t think that partnership will have much opportunity to progress with Jordie most likely coming back in at 12 next week and the rise of Riley Higgins imminent.
Plenty of depth in the centres and I haven’t even mentioned PUJ yet.

Based I think on his NPC season last year and what he has done as a kid so far in Super this year. I not suggesting I think he will be one of our greatest ever players, but he certainly got the potential to be a top really top player. I was like Canes4Life at Levin and thought he looked the type then too! I can't remember off the top od my head, another loosie that has looked so good at such a young age . Mind you I live for watching real good young ones coming through, probably one of my reasons for watching so much rugby, and I a bit of a tragic, so perhaps I look for the good in young players to hard lol!
Yesterday I got to go and watch 3 1st XV teams play a game of 3 halves, then returned home just in time for Highlnders.Drua etc! -

He’s definitely nailing down that centre position. Bailyn might have to find time on the wing if he wants to start.

The future is looking pretty good with a Roigard, Cameron, and Jodie axis.

I am a fan but I thought Sullivan let himself down on defence in this game. He needs to be better or he will find his opportunities a limited.

Add in Ruben Love at fullback when he comes back in and that’s a handy playmaking axis.
The Hurricanes really are growing some good depth in most areas, just hope we can keep everyone together for the next 4-5 years.
When you think of who wasn’t available last night, we could almost name a 2nd XV that’s nearly as strong as the one that took the field against MP. The key to winning Super Rugby is your squad depth and the XV of players below shows the Canes are building that depth required to compete to a high standard consistently.
An XV of Canes players that didn’t feature last night just goes to show the quality of depth developing.
- Rakete-Stones
- Coles (rested)
- Lomax (rested)
- Blackwell
- Sangster (currently injured)
- Delany (currently injured)
- Kirifi
- Laubscher (currently injured)
- Perenara (currently injured)
- Morgan (concussion issues)
- Naiduki
- Barrett (rested) / Higgins
- Umaga-Jensen (currently injured)
- Sinkinson
- Love (currently injured)

@Canes4life They are pretty close to being the form team of the comp and possibly have the most depth of any of the franchises. A lot of this success probably has been springboarded by the success of the Wellington Lions at NPC level.

Or pinched by the Wallabies.

Possibly has to do with pulling all the islands together under one roof. Concept similar to the Lions. Sometimes it works, other years not so much. Coaches make a huge difference. Lealifano is the glue for the team though.

Might be a Chiefs vs Hurricanes final this year, Canes are riding a wave behind a NPC winning Lions contingent. Chiefs have a squad that's peaking also.

But Crusaders have all but one forward in ABs, or NZ XV or Pacific test teams, and a lot of back depth too. It is all about the best team you can field for knockouts - and Crusaders will have the edge regardless
