Where's the fun in that?

@kev Yeah - next RWC is going to be interesting in a crap-shoot sort of way.
To win, you're probably going to have to play hard, dominate the collisions - but, that runs greater risk of something going horribly wrong and playing 60 minutes with 14 men. But, if you button off a bit and lose the collisions - if something doesn't go wrong for the opposition you're going to find yourself on the plane home.
Having a few little oompa-loompas in the team, who will attract high shots from giant locks might be a valuable commodity!

How come last year or two we have been underpowered in the forwards playing SA, France, Ireland with the bulk of the forwards the same as today. Taylor, Ofa, SW, BBBR, Sam C, Ardie, ScoBa.
This time they were great. Loved the error free play and ball retention.Sam Whitelock deserves a knighthood
Think we should bring in a next gen prop to give experience Newell, Norris
It’s called sport 😉
Sometimes it’s your night and sometimes it’s not.
Sure I want it to be our night every night, but I’m not 15yo anymore where I think it’s an injustice or some world shattering event when it’s not.
Maybe the players and coaches were mentally and physically tired after a stressful covid19 affected season. We never really fired on the NHEOYT and the coaches weren't able to flip the script. Last night we played like a team that had a point to prove. Hopefully they can follow up next weekend

I’ve said it many times I’m convinced the northern hemisphere tour was an aberration given the challenges, very long tour away from home, mental/physical fatigue, being cooped up in hotels in nth hemisphere due to COVID restrictions etc.
I actually think it made the squad stronger, more resilient and it was proven in the disrupted lead up.
I reckon we’ll clean sweep the Irish. We’re at our most vulnerable in the first test of the July series and historically only gotten stronger as combinations improve.

Spent too much on the psychologist after the 95 RWC loss to go back now 😀

thats the key isnt it, in how we respond to this first outing....sure we know the Irish will respond and no doubt be better for the hitout, but so will we, so need to prove that the past 2 covid disrupted seasons were blips and the ABs are building again....albeit with a bunch of players who may or may not make next years RWC
-
@Stargazer Complete with yacht rock backing track
-
Goodhue and Havili will be rueing getting Covid and giving Tupaea a chance to start with another season of SR under his belt. Tupaea really has to start again next week after being one of our best last night and combining well with Rieko
-
@No-Quarter Yep, he didn't put a foot wrong and made every post a winner. I can only see Jordan being a change this week in the starting backline.

how many tests to the RWC? We have to know our top midfield and play it consistently. And loosies ... and halves. Got to get combinations working in time for next year
-
assume it was covered earlier in the thread, but why did our coaching box have masks, but the Irish not?
How good was it seeing our props working as they did, and we contested lineouts, sure a couple on our line the game was already ours, but so good seeing them put someone in the air and disrupt!

Bower, Ofa and AT all offer more than scrummaging which is a bonus. If they can hold their own vs SA then their mobility is an asset. I'm not sure KT, Nepo offer enough around the park.
-
@chimoaus was great seeing how well they stood up at scrum time too given the struggles we have had in recent years and how highly rated Tadhg is, and especially Ofa who has struggled in recent weeks.

Assume because they had the plague this week.
-
@booboo but they were over it, or they shouldn't have been there...?
Either way, thought it looked daft with one box all masked up, and the other not.

Don't know what the protocols are? Is there a requirement for masks for a certain period thereafter?
-
Just another thing on the commentators - they credited Cane with that huge hit in the first half that was actually by Ofa.

One country has totally moved on from covid19. One hasn't

@booboo if there are, I wasnt aware, which is entirely possible

Ofa was out to prove a point and really put down a marker - poss. his best game in Black. Some of his hits were really hurting the Irish pack. Another Test or two like that and he'll have the jersey nailed on.
I know bugger-all about front-row play, but noticed a drop-off in forward momentum when Karl T came on.

I’m not huge on Tupaea as a player but last night showed why kind of player works best in the 12 jersey in between BB and RI. So for me it has to be him or Goodhue going forward through to the RWC. If Mounga is in the 10, then you may choose Havili

@Stag said in All Blacks v Ireland - 1st Test:
@African-Monkey 6 runs for 1 meter gained and 14 tackles is hardly earth shattering for an All Black 7 and captain.
really, 14 tackles and a good percentage of them dominant, christ some of you probably need to learn about the game. it's not about stats, but who makes a difference on field and Cane surely does!
-
@junior This! BB needs a "get out of jail" No.12 alongside him. Big Havili fan but a BB, Havili combo doesn't seem to work.

Do we use safety gear for what looks daft to someone on TV or for what they think is best for safety.
-
@Dan54 safe from what? If any of them were ill, like any normal person, they shouldnt come in to work.
When the few of my work colleagues returned to work after covid or isolating due to a house member with covid, we didnt wear masks, is that a thing now?

Yeah sure the Barrett clean out might not reach the red card threshold, but fuck what's the point in what he did? Beyond stupid, like his 3-4 dives over the ruck early in the game for absolutely zero result other than giving us shit ball and the ref a reason to penalise us. Someone needs to sit him down with these clips and ask him why, tell him to pull his head in.
Edit: without that shit it was a top notch locks game.
Red definitely fell into 'old' habits once fatigue set in. In saying that the guy has a huge engine for a big guy.
Except he was diving over rucks right from the start (along with rolling the ball along the deck when he got tackled).

The thing I liked about QT's performance last night was his support play and how he tidied stuff up. There was one occasion when the ball was bobbling around about 5m in-field and he was just so calm and deliberate in looking around and gathering it - looked as though he had all the time in the world.
Hope he can build on it and this isn't a one-off as we need that sort of re-assurance at 12.

I think it recommended that Masks are worn in enclosed places, not a rule, but recommendation, and think with Cpvid in ranks it pays to be safe is all, and show it?

It's quite strange people are saying how crap JGP is when he was a key cog in any Irish go forward. One of their top players during 6n and without him their attack is nonexistent.

@Bones Also with how good he was in Ireland's win over the ABs last year.
I'd take him in a heartbeat over anyone but Smith. He'd be excellent for the ABs.

We already have a ginga in the squad and now you want to add one of the most punchable faces in existence?

Stats are only part of it - running off the ball, cleaning, tough metres on your line, dominant tackles, straight running…lots of quality measures. Sometimes you can do all of that and the game doesn’t go your way. Other times you look like a star. That’s why the media ratings are always bollocks. They don’t know the game plan, they have to produce something to a deadline, they won’t have reviewed the game…still sells papers and we love it when our favourite player is lauded.

Yeah, an ALB like performance with some of the tidy up he did. He's not as light footed as ALB but is stronger in the tackle.

I've never heard he has even the slightest of punchable faces, let alone up the ladder in terms of existence. I don't find his looks very noteworthy at all. Strange take...
