How many Crusaders in your AB 23?

@mariner4life just let Aaron or Whitelock captain the team that way Dalton has a earnest shot of wearing 7 in big test matches

Richie became captain at 24 didn't he? Dalton is almost 25, might as well appoint him now as it's only a matter of time..

i thought cane got the better of paps in both blues/chiefs games

Alex Hodgman, Samsoni Taukei'aho, Ofa Tu'ungafasi, Brodie Rettalick, Sam Whitelock, Tupou Vaa'i, Dalton Papali'i, Akira Ioane (better suited at 8), Aaron Smith, Beauden Barrett, Caleb Clarke, Thomas Umaga-Jenson, Reiko Ioane, Will Jordan, Jordie Barrett.
Ethan DeGroot, Asafo Aumua, Tyrel Lomax, Josh Lord, Ardie Savea, Folau Fakatava, Richie Mo'unga, Anton Lienert-Brown.
Can someone (other than those that wear black and white hooped eyepatches) tell me what this fulla has done to get so much attention? I’d have the Ranga and even a currently out of form Perenara ahead of anything I’ve seen from him in super rugby.
-
@ACT-Crusader ranga yes, TJ nooooo
He looked bloody good before injury, very similar to how ranga is now but more abrasive with the running game.
-
@ACT-Crusader It will be a good chance to watch him closely this weekend. Without Smith in the 23 he should get plenty of minutes marking the experienced Nic White..

It's getting hard to know if people are just taking the Mickey now.
Aaron "after david" Smith as captain is not even a good joke. What a media storm that would set off!
And Whitelock would set up the same problem as he is getting no younger. (Assuming he takes it -- people have been known to refuse honours if they think it is at the expense of a mate.) So then you'd end up keeping an ailing Whitelock in the team rather than look like a tool that just can't pick a captain.

Who really cares about the media, should have zero factoring in any selection decisions.
If the ABS can get back to winning (to the point the media think it is boring) the mostly compliant fan boy media would get back in thier boxes quick enough anyway.
-
@Chester-Draws bloody people eh! Who do they think they are?

1-1 for me
Cane edged the first one with his turnovers. Papali'i edged the second. They both played well in those matches.
I don't think there is an issue with Canes form

He looked like a superstar in the NPC but has been erratic in SR so far
I think when an opinion is formed on a player there's resistance to changing it. NPC form has plenty of people thinking he's an AB in waiting.. so plenty of people still have him pencilled in
Smith, Christie... daylight
I hope the 3rd halfback is not TJ

TJ will be the number 2 halfback to start the season. He wouldn't be mine but just have to accept it.
-
None. When they pull on the Black Jersey they're ABs and no longer Crusaders.
-
@Billy-Tell makes sense, although throughout the annals of time there's been the odd player i.e Scott Hamilton that felt just like a crusader somehow someway in a black jersey

The sponsors care. A lot.
You might not care about his personal transgressions. I certainly don't in his case. But the All Blacks captain is the public face of the team.
So would you be happy NZ Rugby potentially losing millions of dollars through such a selection?

Holy overreaction batman.
Best player in the world selected as captain of All Blacks, OMG!
And we've never had a player who saw a bit of scandal become an AB captain and media personality.

@Nepia pretty much. Has Cane?
B/S, Papali'i is in my 23 but Sat he was off the charts good, he hasn't been that good every match.
He's been off the charts in one or two other games, but consistently high. It's not BS.
I note you declined to comment how good Cane has been.
Cane has been great for a few games running, but we were discussing Papali'i's performance in Saturdays game in comparison to his previous ones.
I'm sure you'll get some support from the Aucklanders in the morning, I'm sharpening my keyboard for the onslaught, and Papali'i has been good this year, but Saturday was another level.
Not making a lot of sense to me - he was out of this world on Saturday, but because he was so good, we should exclude all the other games where he was excellent, just because he wasn't as good. Righto.
That's not what I said at all.

@gt12 said in How many Crusaders in your AB 23?:
And we've never had a player who saw a bit of scandal become an AB captain and media personality.
Muliaina was never "All Black Captain". He was occasional on-field captain, as a reward for long service. That's a very different thing.
Aaron Smith is a very good rugby player. He is also not suited to be the public face of a very high profile team. They're different roles.
And it's not my over-reaction. I just recognise what sponsors want. And indeed, demand.
On top of that, he's in exactly the same position as Cane -- no longer a certainty to start in the RWC. So making him captain does not solve the problem, it merely repeats it. Especially since he will be replaced quite early in a lot of games regardless.
-
@Chester-Draws said in How many Crusaders in your AB 23?:

Disagree strongly. He's clearly the best halfback in New Zealand and relative form doesn't suggest that will change in the next 18 months.
-
@Chester-Draws if Aaron Smith isn’t a certainty then we have massive problems ahead.
He’s still a class above.

None
LOL

Will Jordan. Sam Whitelock. Richie Mounga.
Drawing a blank on anyone else. Maybe Jack Goodhue if he stays fit.

@Damo Codie Taylor was poor, missed a crucial tackle and poor throwing, Ethan Blackadder was anonymous.
I thought Reece was one of thier better players.

That's right, Christie, Grace and Matera.

Yeah blackadder. Could make it.
Reece is popular but I don't really rate him. I don't have him in my 23.
Codie needs to get back to his best. He mightht be past it.

I like his workrate and his ability to pop up in the right place, he seems to read the game pretty well, his biggest issue is that he can often miss some easy tackles.
I also dont get the glee some get in the saders losing, for me, I want every single NZ team to win over any foreign opposition, although MP & the Drua have created a conundrum there as I want both to do well.
-
@taniwharugby said in How many Crusaders in your AB 23?:

Its for the good of SRP. One team always winning and Aussie team always losing will almost kill it
-
@Winger that isn't the same thing.
-
@Damo said in How many Crusaders in your AB 23?:

I really rate him. His workrate is strong, his work over the ball is superb (see the penalty he won last night), the first two steps are electric (see the SA game in 2019).
That said, he's light. If you carry him, you compromise - need to carry bigger players around. It's like the loosies all over again; if you pick Cane cos he's captain, you need a lineout option at 6 or 8 ... and if you want your best athlete in Ardie at 8, then yo uneed peak Jerome equivalent at 6, who can also kick goals, drive the bus, coach teh side, etc ... I jest, but the compromises start to bite when yo uneed a world beater or two at 6 (one to cover bench/injury).
Reece is the same for me, but slighly less so because of where he plays. Some really really good things, but some weaknesses too
-
Is there any glee? I hadn't noticed any.
But in any event a competition where the results are predictable makes for a boring watch.
The Crusaders losing occasionally is no bad thing.

More frustration IMO, as the players struggling have been struggling in the ABs as well.
One person’s reputation that improved yesterday was Richie Mounga. He’s been papering over some pretty large cracks by the looks of things.

Not disagreeing, just pointing out that the Crusaders rely on him doing something special to cover their talent/depth issues

And they have for a while. Go back to the blues game two years ago, he single handedly won it for them.
-
@Kirwan Richie Mo'unga is an absolute talisman for the Crusaders. Time and again he's the guy they go to find holes in defences and to pull out big plays. When he plays well he seems to give enormous confidence to the Crusaders. He's one of the great Super players of all time.
Sadly this doesn't translate to top test level where defences are that more organised and the opposition ball carriers are mountainous and know how to target the first-receiver's channel. Super Rugby stud, Test Rugby dud.
