Foster has been pretty clear that a big reason for Karl over Ethan is they play Ireland 3 times then the Boks 2 times in their first 5 tests.
They already have 2 relative newbies at loosehead (Bower, Ross) - they didn't want a 3rd and see Karl as the strongest scrummaging loosehead in NZ.
It's very clear Ethan will come into the picture once Karl is off.
Not having a go at you, but that implies that Karl is the winning and losing of the series, as we don't have good enough looseheads behind him. That won't change if the next set of players don't get to play against the best scrummagers this year, rather than next. It also means that he has hitched his ride to Moody. It's nice to be old in the current ABs, you can have a guaranteed spot even if you're on the decline.
Don’t tell the poster formerly known as Redbeard or all these other so called hard men on here that props aren’t the difference… 😉
I don’t think it implies that at all. My guess is that they’ve done an assessment of what they’ve seen in Super rugby and balanced that up with what they know about the Irish and said we can’t have 3 greenish looseheads so we need one experienced one involved.
Some will say that’s a pox on development or just a cattle issue or just an unfortunate thing with our frontline loosehead out. That can be debated, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have an experienced guy in the mix. How much he plays will be interesting.

@ACT-Crusader Or maybe he knows a thing or two about the tight five and their past performances and can see the impotence of this present coaching staff.

with Lord unfortunately gone for the season, Tom Robinson might eventually earn his way into ABs camp maybe🤔
Seems strange not to replace Lord, even with a lock. Surely it's worth looking at someone?
Adding Robinson would at least put pressure on Vaai to perform as the lock/blindside and give an option to replace him if he gets injured.
There’s quite a bit in the Players agreement around being named in the first squad of the season. If they really needed someone else they would call them in but it does complicate things slightly

Fozzie ruling Quinten out specifically?

Amusing how the social media post says no replacement to be named, yet I expect Tom and a few others now have hundreds of notifications of people tagging them as options...

Bummer - One of the players we REALLY needed to develop.
Possible replacements
Tom Robinson - but seems too light.
Josh Goodhue.
Josh Dickson

This rules Josh out for the rest of the All Blacks 2022 season. At this stage the All Blacks will not be bringing in a replacement lock.
What you think you know about locks irrelevant

Perhaps if Tom tears it up in the grand final, then he might be named? Nah, probably not.
Tom's too little to be an AB lock.
To be honest, Eklund looks pretty small to be a contender at hooker as well - though he has played well this season. I would have been pretty surprised to see him there, so Tana and Richard not convincing me.
And if de Groot has failed to meet his fitness targets, which seems to have been widely publicised, then I'm pleased to see Fozzie taking a leaf out of Dame Noeline's book and giving him a boot up the arse.

Would it be possible and how long would it take for someone like Tom Robinson to put on 5kg?
Is it possible?
Certainly has the workrate, right attitude and lineout prowess. -

Would they still have to pay Lord if he was already injured when they selected him?
More genius selection lol

I would've.
Guys with his height and mobility don't grow on trees - whereas at lock he's always going to be stretching in terms of height and weight.

You realise he is taller than Scott Barrett?
-
@number9 It's only three tests. Do they really need more than 4 locks? After all, they may still include a replacement in the RC squad.
For the Ireland Series, maybe they'll use one or more of the Māori ABs locks as injury cover/back-up. Both squads have crossed-over in the past.
