As opposed to which Fern conversations?
Awful analysis, incorrect conclusions, zero insight
Wrong about pretty much everythingIt’s amazing how many ferners don’t admit this though.

My 2c..
I've got Rieko as one of the best rugby players in the world, every single team would give their left testicle to have him in their starting lineup at either 11 or 13. Low error rate, strong tackler and fucking lethal on attack. Absolutely world class.
I've also got Aaron Smith as the best halfback bar none. Every 10 around dreams of playing outside him just for the extra space he gives with his pass alone, without mentioning his game awareness and great option taking. The ABs always look threatening with him at 9.
Jordie and Jordan are both right up there at 14 and 15. Jordie solid as a rock at the back, strong tackler, strong runner and a fantastic kicking game to boot. Jordan looks like he's going to end up an AB great alongside the likes of Cully, he's just freakish with ball in hand and can break open any test with 1/4 of an opportunity.
Our starting backline is actually stupidly good. It's our forwards where we are struggling a bit - two past greats in Whitelock and Retallick in the twilight of their careers without anyone new really stamping their mark to put them out to pasture. Same in the front row, some decent options but nobody really dominating and screaming pick me. Though Samisoni has future great written all over him but early days yet.
Akira has the potential to be great, but needs to be more consistent. Dalton is a future great but again early days. Ardie is great at what he does, but is being played out of position affecting the balance of our loose trio.
We have loads of talent and some of the worlds best sprinkled through the team, we just need a gameplan that actually plays to our strengths and we'll be extremely difficult to beat.

@cgrant If he still played on the wing, yes. Not as a midfielder.
Please name a better centre. Fickou ? Ringrose ? Hmmm, RI all day IMO.
Lukanyo Am was named as TSF's centre for last year, and he was decidedly average.

I'm more than prepared to admit it's perfectly correct about a lot of you.

With Fakatava unlikely to have his eligibility sorted by the Irish series, barring injury you'd have to think the 3rd halfback spot will come down to either Weber or Perenara (behind Smith and Christie). Will Weber be able to show form coming back from injury or do they go with Perenara?
If Weber gets some form back they could pick Weber and run Perenara in the Maori ABs (Ratima seems like a good selection for Maori ABs).

I was coming to post exactly the same thing. He’d also make any team at either 11 or 13.

Figure out the right 6,
don't play Jordie and George on the wings, -

there isn't a team in the world that wouldn't take RI on current form at 13
He would transform Ireland to RWC favourites instantly for instance
Agreed - every other team in the world would look at his obvious qualities as being an improvement to their team, rather than looking at his weaknesses (which can be improved simply with more game time) and saying he's not fit to play in the midfield (which sadly is a typical AB supporter's view of not just Rieko but almost everyone in black)

Ioane is now one of the top players in two positions at Test level, delivered - objectively - on the field.
If he has a top season at test level at centre this year then yeah, top player in two positions. Last year he was very good, but still looked like a winger doing a good job at centre. This year to me, at Super level, he is looking more and more like a centre. Hoping he can show it at Test level too.
At test level he'll need a decent 12 next to him - solid playmaking and kicking with the ability to bend the line and give Ioane some space to use his pace to try and get outside of his defender. A blend of Havili/Tupaea.
An example of why us old buggers from different eras of play really have no idea.
These days players align everywhere and anywhere. RI appears on the wing as much as centre and the 12 is often the 13 with fullback or wing between them and the 10.
We need to stop picturing players in traditional first phase spots. -

Players play in their best position on the field, hence why you have Akira and Coles out on the flanks where their running ability can be exploited while also ensuring ball winners (i.e. ruck work) in the wider channels.

L Fainga'anuku or RTS
Biggest weaknesses are props, and possibly second five.

I’ve got a feeling old mate Foster is gearing up for a J Barrett / R Ioane midfield combo this year. Whether that happens straight away remains to be seen but I do think we will see it at some point.
It also allows Jordan to make the fullback jersey his own.

He commented a few weeks back that he sees Jordie as a fullback didn't he?

Will Weber be able to show form coming back from injury or do they go with Perenara?
I think we need to look to the future and use the 3rd slot to grow the cattle rather than stick with TJP, particularly as Christie is a more than capable AS understudy.. Roigard and/or Ratima?
-
@Victor-Meldrew it will be a day of elation when Folau Fakatava is eligible to play for the All Blacks, hopefully that day comes sooner rather than later🙂

Ratima is having a cracking debut season. Has shoved Roe out of the way at the Chiefs and has Weber in his sights.
Reminds me a bit of TKB in his prime. -

Only if you ignore the form of our locks at international level. I'd love to be wrong, but they are shadows of their former world class selves

@Mackerzzzz biggest weakness is the Coaching Staff. No one knows what the hell they are doing.
-
@Frank did he? I just find it strange that the Canes are all of a sudden giving Jordie big minutes at 12 when he’s rock solid at 15. Surely that’s messaging from the AB coaches.

He’s not getting big minutes at the Canes still is he? They tried a few things and will probably still move the cattle around.
Foster was specifically asked about Jordie at twelve and he answer was that he was one of the ABs best last year playing at fullback so he’s not sure why he would go looking to move him. -
Yeah given Fozzie's very lukewarm comments towards Jordie at 12 I don't think the AB coaches were behind the shift. Canes have been shifting their midfield around all season haven't they trying to find a spark? Almost a different combination every game?

how good was that, just seeing them get on the outside of their man, fight for space to run support and actual free the wing
-
How good was Hosea Gear when he was in the mood to be good ?
-
Also, you forget that Conrad Smith had good acceleration for taking an outside break.

New Zealand Rugby are in the midst of creating an NZ A or a second NZ side to shadow the All Blacks from 2022 onwards. With a huge breadth of players vying for a spot in the national squad, administrators believe that a secondary side will enable enhanced experience and playing time at the highest level for those who miss out on All Blacks selection. Former All Black Jeff Wilson broke the news on SENZ. Wilson is a huge supporter of the concept, believing that the addition of a secondary top-level team will change the mindset of selectors, and will inevitably aid the All Blacks in their preparation for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. “I would say this, NZ Rugby … they’re looking at a New Zealand A, or a second NZ side playing a number of games this year,” Wilson said on SENZ’s Super South. “I think that group is going to be critical, because there’s going to be a lot of guys who have worn the All Black jersey in the last 18 months who may miss out, and they’re going to get really important rugby. “There’s going to be another tier, which is going to be really well coached and have a number of games I believe this year.
-
@KiwiMurph If that happens, it will be interesting to see whether NZR are going to designate this team as it's official national 2nd XV under World Rugby's Regulations (which means players will be captured by playing for this team).
Also, who's going to coach this team. Will one of the assistant coaches coach this team, or will they hand the gig to someone outside the current coaching set-up. Could be a good job for Robertson, preparing him for a smooth end-of-2023 takeover.
Edit: if they don't designate this team as its official 2nd XV, they can field Fakatava!
-
@Stargazer Razor would do well as coach I reckon, although it would be some tough selections for him does he play Ennor at 13 or go with B Sullivan😅 how about number 8 would Razor go with what he knows in Grace or get Mikaele-Tu'u to partner Harmon & Jacobson🙂

I'm guessing this team might play at the same time as the Maori All Black team, and Sullivan would be unavailable.
-
@bobily2 I may be wrong but I think it's far more likely that this All Blacks XV will play games before/during the End-of-year Tour, not in July. For example, the last weekend before the international test window starts and then maybe a mid-week game. They have done this in the past. In any case, after the NPC has finished.
-
If there is going to be a NZ A (or more accurately a NZ B team) they need to be playing the equivalent teams from Aust, SA and Arg rather than the PI teams, or Japan. Games between NZ and Aust would be easy to organise but the extra SA and Arg teams would still be at the mercy of NH clubs.
-
-
I am thinking that you make a weekend of it, and the A teams play each other on the Friday night or Saturday afternoon before the RC games.
