Italy vs All Blacks 2021 NH Tour

We didn't play well but we still flogged them. We often play poorly against Italy, and normally win by less than 38 points.
Christie played well I though and Cane got through 80 minutes.
Flush the dunny and move on. In 2 weeks everyone will have forgotten this game except for the score.

Just watched replay and gave not looked at any comments. I was annoyed at the refereeing allowing a lot of cynical stuff to go unchecked. I thought that was what rocked the AB's. Players taken off the ball. Lying on players in the ruck. Checking players under the high ball without genuinely going for it. Tap downs. There would have been a lot of penalties in nz. I thought he was overly officious but ignored all the cynical stuff.
As a result I thought Richie Mounga was well off beat with his kicking and setting up his runners while the AB's tried to ride it out.
Bridge and Coles were easily our best in my view, under pressure. Cane was largely ignored by commentary but did lots of good things as game went on. Christie was a real spark.
Must be hard for coaches and captains when you have to adapt so many instinctive things due to referee interpretations.
Italy went very well. Great display by Ioane. Minozzi and Carney were tigers too. -
Haven’t read the whole thread, about half way through the second half…have not enjoyed this
Not going to bag guys like vaai, lord, ennobled etc as their either inexperience of out of their depth
More worried about how poorly cane, Richie, dmac and Reece have played

Looking forward to this game, it could be prosecco rugby. Plenty of scoring opportunities for our lightning #11, Bascule Bridge.
Funny, if there's a game I don't look forward to it's Italy. They're just so uninspiring and spoiling. We tend to play down to their level.
Will watch of course. Live. But Italy have an amazing ability to suck the life from a game.
As predicted.
So, set my alarm for 10:50 ... a.m. d'oh. Missed it live but have just finished watching the recording.
I haven't read the thread but I suspect much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
And also expect that many of the following points will have been raised.
- Our handling was atrocious. Some down to our tactics of playing it really flat and players getting ball and man at the same time. Some dropsys and bad passes just inexplicable.
The former, which can be attributed to the coaching staff (who I'm sure are copping plenty of flack), but is fixable through tactics .
-
Our set piece was generally excellent. Won us the match.
-
Our D was awesome and a bit of a weapon. Period in the first half when Italy retained possession we twice (I think) forced them back about 30m out of the 22. The irony being they had a try from the resulting we-can't-make-ground-with-ball-in-hand-let's-go-for-the-last-resort-random-kick, but the ref fucked up.
-
Wasn't the first, last or only time the ref fucked up. Where'd they get him from?
-
Hurricanes supporters will be delighted as Cane looked sluggish and lacking power.
-
Vaa'i my MOTM.
-
And I reckon they've made a good choice in Lord.
-
Lomax went ok.
-
Christie went OK. Any word on Weber? Head knock may mean we get TJ for the big games.
-
First half score flattered. Full time about right.
-
I said earlier that I knew none of the Italians, and none of them did anything to make them memorable in this match.
-
May have missed any earlier discussion, but is Monty any relation to Digby?
All for now. Will read the thread and see who is clever enough to agree with me.

Big mistake from the ref.

Same channel?
Grounding fine
No, bounced forward off the number 8, so had been hooked.
Someone tell me again how you're allowed to feed the ball? I know they changed it relatively recently, but I thought it had to be straight? Getting very league like those Eyetie scrum feeds.

That fucking ref say no try on field call? You fucking cheat.
Just incompetent

D Mac having a mare.
Needs to be a crackdown on chasers running past the ball deliberately.
Am thinking we have to rethink our catching of the high ball.
The bad guys are creating confusion in the landing zone.
Do we change from letting the fullback coming forward try and catch it, and let the stationary/retreating wingers catch it or bat it back and have fullback stand back and clean up any slop?

@yeetyaah breakdown is reffed differently up north. Funnily enough, it is more of a free for all than in the SH. ABs need to adapt to that.
Also the NH refs could read the fucking law book and ref correctly.

How was Cane ahead of the kicker? better camera angle, please.
That summed up the ref (and the fuck useless TV coverage).
Had to rewind as no replay.
Yes, Cane was in front. Was moving kinda sideways as the ball was kicked, and was immediately put onside by Tupaea within one step.
Therefore was onside before he moved forward.
-
Really glad I didn't watch that live.
That was shit.
Very few players put their hand up for next week.
ABs attacking shape is really bad and predictable. Amazing what happens when Ofa picks and goes instead of the standard shape.
ABs breakdown work was not up to scratch.
-
Yeah sure was a tough watch which is to be expected with a B team out there. Tried to do too much off first phase with a green midfield combo who couldn't handle the linespeed of the Italian defence, especially Ennor. Our ball handling was also probably the worst we'll ever see from an AB team.It was only really the set piece that got us anywhere today.

Really? He was quite heavily involved but made a shedload of errors. I am mainly thinking, I hope to hell that Brodie's shoulder is OK or otherwise they've got Barrett or Tuipolotou on a plane.
Christie and Sotutu the best on show for me.
-
I think in these games we have to focus on structure and keeping it in the forwards. We know we are going to win but Dmac and Mounga trying to dance through a bunch of forwards is pathetic. Throwing it wide and getting stuffed behind the gain line was woeful. We need to learn to graft in the forwards and earn the gain line first. As Mariner said our international game suffers due to Super Rugby style. The coaches failed.
-
It has occurred to me that we are too fucking arrogant for our own good.
Teams fan across the field and tackle our unthreatening ball runners
Do we play close to the ruck and try to drag them in? Do we fuck. Fuck.you, we play with width. We're the All Blacks.
Someone goes against the plan and attacks the fringes, lo and behold...

Weber/Christie, Mo'unga, Reece, DMac.
Too many skippy, little men in the backs - and with Bridge, Ennor and Tupaea - not really any blockbusting runners for them to play off.
-
I have to say the set piece and forwards in general this year has been a real highlight. Plumtree is clearly doing a good job. Apart from lock we have genuine competition in every position which is fantastic. The hookers scored 4 tries, scrum let Finlay score and Ofa setup another. Shows just how woeful the backs were today.
I never played in the backs, so I don't know what goes on out there but from my couch the backs just seem a little disjointed and lacks cohesion and fluidity. Perhaps it shows just how important Smith is to the AB's backline.
One of the worst performances I have seen in a long time with turnovers and penalties conceded absolutely dire. Flush the dunny and move on.
