@arhs Mostert? it's like you didn't watch their last two tests. He's the best loosie in the world, out of all the loosies who can't move sideways.
Was still more effective in what he brought than Vermeulen and Kolisi. Maybe they will play better this week?

3 Barretts starting. Only second group of 3 brothers to be ABs?
@taniwharugby Good article this one, great writer.
I'm sorry, didn't check writer's name.
My beef with him isn't that he's not a good writer, he just chose to be a troll (and not sure he actually likes rugby union anyway).Started as the loigue writer iirc
Makes sense, he
triestried to write about league even in his union columns-actually I haven't read his articles for years, even if he is the only Welsh troll in the village... -

Jesus there some clueless comments here, not all of them, but these leapt out. More stuff to be up on the changing room walls 😜
This is not the same team that won the World Cup. Let's be very clear on that. They've lost a number of their players who have headed off overseas
SA freely pick from anywhere
And two years ago, they were playing a lot more open and expansive rugby than this team is showing us this year."
Obviously didn't watch the semi versus Wales
The fullback is fine; Willie le Roux is a very good player
Was
Is.
"Willie le Roux is a very good player"
“Willie le Roux was a very good player” he has been average for quite sometime
oh not arguing with that, I just couldn't find Mains saying that, he blamed the centre, props..
I'm missing your point, he said the Le Roux is not a problem as he is a very good player. Which is utter rubbish, he was def a problem versus the Wallabies - he was responsible for a lot of the stiffled attack
It is no biggie I thought you meant Mains said that and/or his article agreed with you.
I don't expect Le Roux remembers he once played running rugby. I'm not sure I ever thought he was a fantastic strategic kicker and when I saw him play years ago he did more damage as an unpredictable wing type than as a safe fullback type but a Bok supporter might well correct me. -
Why so much concern in the papers over loosies, when we should be more worried about props (well, not Moody) and the less experienced midfield?
Not about Bridge of course, I just read that he was athletic. That will be enough...hope JB is retained for kicking duties... -

Not about Bridge of course, I just read that he was athletic. That will be enough...hope JB is retained for kicking duties...The loss of Papali’i is big. The best tight loosie we have and would’ve been ideal for the physical Boks. The Boks have gone smaller with Kwagga Smith so potentially Papali’i’s loss won’t be as influential. Blackadder off the bench is fantastic.
Jacobson will need to play in tighter to allow Akira space in the outside channels.
Jordan/Bridge/Jordie are all competent fullbacks who are also v.good under high ball so will diffuse Pollard/De Klerk’s kicking game.

I agree, when Cane returns, AB #7 will be a hot topic.

@victor-meldrew especially since all 3 can play in other loose forward positions!

On a serious note, I wonder how much behind the scenes work Sam Cane is doing with the team. The ABs seem much more together this year, with senior players taking to each other when things aren't going well, minimal panicking when things do go wrong, and new players slotting in seamlessly.
That can't be down to just Foster - though he deserves a lot of credit.

3 Barretts starting.
Imagine if it hadn't already happened this season, it might be slightly more exciting 😬
I think it has happened quite a few times but I still go, wow, I remember when it was a bit weird to have two Whetton ABs..
Do Reiko and Akira have a brother ? I hope not cos he’d be feeling all sorts of stink about not playing too.
You mean like the shorter Hemsworth bro actor (Westworld) that nobody ever remembers?!
Reminds me of the classic response to Mark Waugh sledge:"What are you doing out here? You're too s**t to play for England!"
Which got smashed for six with: "Maybe so, but at least I'm the best player in my family".
Worse though, is that there was a third Waugh who only played provincially.

I once read a Lions or Wales player sledged Meads after the AB scrum was demolished on the opposition 5m
"How's that for scrummaging you c*nt"
Meads: "Fucking impressive, but when you've pulled your head out of your arse, you'll see we've just scored"

Can't wait to see how that loose forward trio works together against a bigger Springbok pack.
What?
We're NZ. Bokke, Poms, Lions have bigger forward packs by definition.
Ad an aside, has anyone got size, height, weight stats for us so I don't have to look up myself?
I can remember fairly soon after the 03 wc , we had a series at home against England,
All the talk was how we would go against the BIG English pack ,
When I looked up the stats we were slightly heavier man for man except Kevvie .

I think there was also another Waugh who didn’t make it that far.
Mark actually scored more international hundreds than Steve, lots of people forget that.

@kiwiinmelb back when the pack might weigh in around 850kg...now, most top international packs are over 900kg

-
Another fascinating Nick Bishop piece today https://www.theroar.com.au/2021/09/24/coachs-corner-issue-27-who-is-really-the-number-one-team-in-the-world/
"The Springboks have lost the most own-ball rucks (6.7 per cent), and have the slowest average ruck speed at 4.1 seconds per breakdown – compared to New Zealand’s 3.9 per cent loss rate and 2.8 average ruck speed.
They have made only six clean breaks and eight offloads in four games, compared to 35 and 40 by the All Blacks ... The combination of poor ruck stats, and the low ratio of offloads attempted suggests that they don’t dare to shift the ball through the hands too often, for fear of losing it to the most lethal counter-attacking side on the planet."
-
@kiwiinmelb thats always been the case though, perception vs reality.

@l_n_p they got effectively counter-rucked out wide quite often in those wallaby tests.

@mariner4life 1.3 seconds faster speed by the AB's - feels huge on the (in)ability to reset a defensive line by the opposition.
Makes me fully appreciate the finer points of
cheatinghow a top class seven / backrower is able to buy his side 0.5 - 1 seconds in the tackle ... (1) target the ball in the tackle (2) fall marginally on the other side (3) live on the edge as you roll away and (4) adjust all this to what the referee will let you get away with. -

Interesting little snippet - last night they had Will Jordan on The Project doing a puff piece. But, they asked him if he was the fastest player in the ABs and if not, who is. The gist of his response was:
To be honest, I don't really know. We haven't put it to the test. Might have to do that. Of course, Rieko's got himself at the top of the tree and Braydon Ennor is also pretty quick.
Interesting to see that Ennor is the third man he put in the mix.

Looking up his Athletic Record he placed 2nd in the 100m Auckland greatest schools Comp in 2015 recording a time of 11.13 which is pretty quick .For a 19 year old
-
Ennor seems a bit like the Toeava for this generation of players in the fact that people keep talking up his potential and he keeps getting selected but the average punter is a bit confused why.
-
@chris That's Ennor presumably.
Google threw up this for Crusaders' backs.
-
@chris-b I always think when Rieko gets a clean intercept and is being chased, he runs at 90% and is foxing his speed (Teddy Thomas chasedown). Not sure why, either likes being "nearly" chased down or is not wasting an ounce of energy.
When he HAS to hit top speed (being caught out of position and nearly skinned by Tom Banks ...) it looks like he still has his afterburners.
BB not mentioned?
-
@l_n_p No - just that brief response.
I'd think Reece, Bridge and Beaudy would be the other guys keen to line up on the start line. Beaudy's hit 30 now, though - so he's probably not quite as quick as he was five years ago.

Game speed a bit different than top end speed over 100 m.
Game speed is explosiveness over short distances to medium distances. -

BB has dropped his speed a bit it shows a little bit.

The 2013 game from Jo'burg was on Sky earlier in the week. Beauden was lightning fast back then (e.g., his try, catching le Roux from behind). We'll ignore his front-on tackling.
