Think the backline is pretty spot-on - only think that could be changed would be DMac as a super-sub rather than starting. Hope the DH/ALB combination goes well and continues to develop - think there's some serious potential there. Great that Reiko is starting as, from what we have seen in the last few games, he's getting his mojo back

Not sure about 7 & 8, (I'd have Ardie at 7 & Jacobson at 8 ) but perhaps Foster wants experience at 8. Akira has the opportunity to nail down the 6 slot and deserves his place.

Geezuz we love a moan eh?

Actually surprisingly happy with that team.

Like the backline - I feel more safe with Reece over Jordan - his all around game is much more complete. Jordan does pretty well at running in tries, but his flaws (linking, defence) will be exposed a lot more against Aus. Rieko is the form winger in the team. As well as the fact Jordan is injured - what would people have rather seen?

Likewise the loosies - Papali'i was the form loose forward in SR and I really like the balance they've got there. Jacobson will bring a huge effort off the bench.

Yeah I guess FR is a bit meh, but we'll get more out of our hooker/locls than Aus will.

@bones loosie balance probably not there yet, but Ardie will still put in a good shift even out of position.

Yeah I'm pretty happy, especially surprised foster has the guts to tell Ioane to wind his neck in and play in his best position, not where he wants. DMac for me on the bench for jordie. But neither set the world on fire this year in tests. No way we could leave Ardie out of the loose trio, you need some experience. Finally front row, no idea about that, dark arts, but I think Taylor really needs to step up

jesus, it's like they make a couple of decisions just to fuck with the public. It all looks so good, and then we end up with fucking Ardie at 8 again. And seriously, if DMac's last test didn't play him out of the spot, then it is impossible to get dropped from the ABs

We are desperately short at fullback.

What did DMac do so poorly in his last test?
Serious question as I’m trying to remember. Even went back to the thread to see if it was just me forgetting things.
Sure the DMac v JB debate continues with merit and there are fairly valid concerns on the overall size of the backline (that shouldn’t have to be fixed by the 15).
There are also the old perceptions of headless chook play based on previous years that haven’t been shaken.
I remember the amazing chase back, tackle and turnover but that’s about it.

My memory (other than awesome try saver) is getting tackled easily behind the advantage line. The bigger players are able to stand in the tackle longer.

DMac has a similar problem to Bridge but for different reasons. If he’s not in space then he doesn’t offer much. Bridge has concrete feet, and DMac might be too small for fullback.

I’d put him on the right wing and let him pop up whenever he likes. Could be freed from the requirements of fullback and we could actually get full value from him. Cory Jane style fullback winger.

I get all that. I’m not trying to argue that he is the best 15 just that he didn’t deserve the comment that he played himself out of the team in his last outing.
Yes his weakness at test level is size simply because it’s more likely that he will be caught upright in the carry and get driven back. The counter to that is elusiveness.

    Let's see...

Probably our 2 fastest loosies (Savea, Ioane).
Probably our 2 most abrasive loosies (Papali'i, Ioane).
Probably our 2 best jackals (Savea, Papali'i).
One of them will be replaced by a guy in the form of his life who is a great hybrid of all three.

Not a lot to be unhappy about for me.

@bones I didnt say I was unhappy, just that trio doesnt seem as well balanced as previous trios, but is still a very good trio.

Yes, but as the standard of opposition gets stronger then that weakness gets exploited more. Particularly with Reece on the wing as well, not a great defender and also a midget.

Yep. As I said, not the perfect answer but still performs more often than not.
I’m not a Jordie fan because I don’t see him having as much vision which, to me, is the most important skill at 15. He doesn’t cover the ground that is needed for the current game plan where the 15 is expected to continually come up. I don’t know if the tactic is the best but it’s what the coaches want and DMac does it better.
But yes, if Ben Smith found the fountain of youth I’d have him back in a flash over either.

Not sure about that back three's ability under the ball.

A game against SA would have a totally different back three with Jordan and JB in there to provide extra height.

come on, are you seriously telling me that in 2021, when this style of kicking has been around for a decade and a half, and with specialist coaching we are still wedded to teh idea that you need to pick tall wingers no matter what else they offer just to catch high balls? That's idiotic.

Even the Africans pick midgets on the wing. Rugby League wingers are still often short but are excellent under the high ball. Coaching is a thing guys

Pretty happy with this team selection
    D Mac
worked well with Mounga as a dual
Play maker. I think that’s a big reason for his selection.
    Reiko
on the wing it’s his best position gives us a lethal finisher on the left side.
    Reece
I like Jordan as well, but Foster did mention Reece was asked to up his work rate and he has,
Every game he has been everywhere getting into the game.

MF and half’s Awesome all creators.
Most exciting backline we have put out for quite awhile.

    Forward pack
Great to see two jackels in the LF combo, needed I think playing Aussie.
Our two best Locks back together

    Front row
Great impact from the Bench in Coles and our 2 better ball running props to combat Australia’s props who make a big impact with ball in hand from their Bench.

Overall not a Foster fan,but I see the makings of a game plan and the direction we may be going which is positive,so pleasantly surprised.
I just hope it’s not all stuffed up by Foster with unclear messages.

At least now that Ioane is in his correct position, Coles is now not our best winger

Alright @Derpus what are we going down by? Auckland will be overcast and dry (for Auckland) around 13C at kickoff.

    I'll say ABs 53-12 Wobs.

He wasn't a midget. Amazingly safe under the high ball and probably the best fend I can recall.

I am pretty pleased with this line up, considering Jordan is injured. I am just a bit mitigated about Bower, for the same reasons many of you have pointed out. I don't think he will travel to France in 2023 so his selection is rather odd as it would have been a good occasion to test De Groot against a solid opposition.
