Wolves and Burnley were giants in the late 50s/early 60s and both nearly slid out of the league altogether in the 80s. Things change in football which is part of the appeal.

Discussion has been under way for a while but there has definitely been a rush by certain parties to announce it and declare it is happening as soon as possible.

The outcome will be fascinating. But these clubs are among the biggest, most famous, richest, most storied clubs in the world. They either think the breakaway can work or they are gambling on the current power structure making serious concessions

So, watched BBC News at 10 last night about this. Could certainly be argued it was a stitch up, but here's how it went
- Explain situation and what happened and why
- Get in business editors to explain how this is better for Football business and talk about the hugely positive effect on Juventus & Man Utd share prices
- Interview lots of British fans. Unanimous disgust at it. Real anger, real venom
- Interview a Frenchman (I think) outside Arsenal. Talk about both sides, mentions it'll be better to see Arsenal play the bigger teams more often
- Interview Inter fan, Simon Wang, in Beijing (in Chinese). Overjoyed with the it. Doesn't want to watch his team play smaller clubs like Sparta Prague etc. Will get to watch Inter play Barca / Real more often..
Get it now.
Asian money > the actual fans who go to the games and have done for generations.

I think I read these clubs stand to make more each year than if they did the league/champs league double now
If course that comes at the expense of everybody else

Hasn't this been in the pipeline since 2019? I agree they may have rushed the announcement - probably to take steam out of UEFA's announcement the following day - but they must have been talking details for some time? Otherwise, how could anyone make the decision to join?

What have the players said about this? Obviously much smaller competitions but World Series Cricket and Super League got the players on board first before announcing the comp. I’m sure the players will be nicely compensated but not being able to play international games will be a hard pill to swallow.

This could get ugly. Funny that UEFA and maybe FIFA would take the moral high ground, when they along with the IOC are probably the most corrupt sports organisations in the world. I can't see how they can legally block players from representing their countries, and if it works those international tourneys such as the Euros will suffer if a great number of marquee stars are left out

Not too much from the current players that I've seen. But Klopp said last night he was against it. He's a fairly big hitter.

I see no reason why they can’t block them if the national federations are on board. Happened with cricket and league. Shit, the ABs disqualify players who play abroad.
Will we then get parallel, non-sanctioned international games? I just find it incredible that the clubs would make this decision without consulting the players. Could unravel very quickly if they form a united front. But can they say no to that sweet sweet cash?

They may block them initially. I guess the longer the new league exists, and if it does well and if the existing comps suffer financially, eventually UEFA and the FAs will come to the table. It happened with cricket and league
On one hand I think it would be wise to consult the players. On the other hand, since when do the owners care what the players think? The fact there were no locker room leaks about this thing (despite it being a rumour for a while), and the comments by Mourinho and Klop against the move suggest they were as surprised as anyone.

@rancid-schnitzel yeah it seems madness for them not to have sorted this with the players. Any loophole/s or avenues for employment cases will start popping up - especially if playing at a breakaway club meant issues with your national career.
edit: whoops, forgot to say that it does seem madness to keep players (and managers!?) out of the loop... but as @canefan intimates I don't think any of us reckon the owners are doing this for the players!
I have been following a bit of coverage and holy shit there are some very angry fans venting hard. Largely from the UK and tied back to all those 'challenges' that arise when your club is owned by a rich fucker, foreign or not! Def seems like it's for the wider international market and money is insane, as you'd expect with soccer-football I guess.

This goes back to what I think @canefan said about it hard to view UEFA as the good guys in all this. It also makes me think that Real and Barca fans are probably arrogant enough to not give a shit about the other Spanish clubs and will happily throw them under a bus.

I was just coming to post that I talked with my friend today who is from Paris and is a huge PSG fan, he simply said that he is hoping that PSG joins as it will be awesome. I was really surprised but he essentially followed it up with ‘fuck UEFA’
