While I think he is the best man for the job, seems odd to name him given the uncertainty going forward, although I guess around now is when he'd have been named for the June series?

I can't even remember who was supposed to be coming haha...was it Wales?

Does the AB captain get paid more?

Surely has too given the extra responsibilities - meetings, media commitments, other duties.

No I don't think so, from what Richie had said in his memoirs. But I think it is just to put some positive rugby news out there. Keep people interested, Joe public

Good sensible move. Best man for the job currently.

Yep all the rugby currently needs a captain.

Foster says that they have delayed the announcement for a month so we would have known already but for covid-19. Interesting that Cane was approached several months ago about taking the role, probably not long after Foster was appointed. I do remember him saying he had decided on his captain back then.

Whitelock was an AB great, but he needs to prove he's still an automatic starter.

Cane was the best option. Hope he stays healthy.

    .....and the Scots.

Fucken typical. Using a lame excuse like a worldwide pandemic to avoid getting thrashed.

He also skipped Super to play in Japan.

Where is BSG? Cane, Williamson and Burling all 1-2 years apart from each other at TBHS? Crazy.

Assuming Foster is looking at this with a two year timeline then it's a good appointment. His contract is up then and Cane will be hitting 10 years at pro level. We can cross our fingers he can extend beyond that.

I've seen a few comments about "when was the last time we had a skipper who was not the best at their position?". With provincial blinkers removed I'd say every skipper outside of Fitzy and McCaw at least had a very worthy challenger for their spot at some stage in their tenure.

Probably the best devious slight at an AB captain ever.

    Pleased with this.

Does the hard yards, never gives up and we always seem to play that little bit better when he's on the field.

And he has that look in his eye when the going gets tough - a more determined, different look to Read's wild-eyed expression when things aren't going well.

Was never really going to be anyone else except maybe Sam Whitelock. Obviously my Chiefs bias plays a part in saying I'm happy with the choice.

Should have started in Yokohama. Still can't believe it....

So does the leadership group ever get formally announced?

If it’s another 5 then I’d go with: Coles, Patty T, Whitelock, TJ and Barrett B. Don’t they often have young guys in the group (Cane and McCaw were by all accounts IIRC, appointed early in their AB careers), so someone like Mounga could be there?

    No Aaron Smith?

@canefan yep, considering Smith and Mo'unga are the starter 9/10, I don't see how you couldn't have them there. Taylor would probably be involved in some capacity.

@Bones I had those 2 on my list, though I speculated and restricted the final group to 5. No idea how big the group is actually; it’s probably fluid.
