Who does TSF want to be the next AB coach?
-
From the 1014 interview Gatland seemed pretty intent on returning to NZ. He has been away for a long time now and is not getting any younger. He has done all there is to do in the Northern Hemisphere you would think. What motivation apart from money does he have to coach England or France. I doubt he is short of a dollar so my money is on him returning to NZ either in the AB's or for the Chiefs.

Pity we can't bring in Edwards as a "vs NH sides defence adviser" for the RWC!
Was impressed with Wales defence especially for the England and Ireland matches. Ireland never looked likely in the early stages despite spending a fair chunk of time camped on the Welsh line.

@rotated I dont think there is any downside to have international experience. The only one I can see is that we are effectively saying you have to go and coach outside of NZ if you want to coach the ABs.
This has lead to the brain drain happening which is just as damaging than the player drain. It also means NZ IP is being introduced to other countries.
Would any current super rugby coach be in the role if Cotter, Gatland, schmidt Rennie, picav and Boyd, Joseph etc were available for coaching roles?
The answer is no, with the possible exception of Robertson.
Could we have kept all the above coaches? No but I dont see the point of ushering them out the door if you have ambitions of coaching the ABs.
On the flipside, gatland is surely a better coach now than if he stayed in NZ. The power has swung to the north and its a good thing for coaches to have experience in this environment.
However, when you consider that a lot of people think it is a done deal with Foster succeeding Hansen after the world cup then you have to ask what is the point of getting all this internation experience?
Sure, Foster has been an asst coach for an international team but has actually never been an international head coach. Perhaps Gatland etc should have stayed in NZ and taken a less demanding role of asst coach to land the big prize.
Plus there will be plenty of the above coaches who leave NZ and never come back to coach here

@DaGrubster frankly the idea of Foz taking on the head coaching role scares me. He was poor with the chiefs, and it is one thing to be a good assistant, another entirely to be a head coach. For starters he will need to identify talent.....

I think it scares us all. No doubt he is a good rugby man but with the wealth of coaching talent that we have produced, surely something is wrong if Foster gets the gig.
I hope I am wrong but I cant see him lasting longer than 2 years if he is appointed. And, of course, that will be because of results being poor.
I do wonder that with so many coaches publicly stating they are unavailable or securing other coaching roles, effectively ruling them out, that it is a open secret that he has already got the nod.

Maybe it's because we haven't lost a RWC in 12 years but I think people are forgetting how things work when the ABs lose there. Public sentiment will be rabid and the record of the past four years will be viewed solely through the result of the RWC - it will not be pretty for Foster if they lose.
The penny will drop; coudn't beat the Lions, lost to Ireland for the first time ever (twice) and now bombed out of a RWC... no chance.
If you go by the bookies there is a 40-45% chance the ABs win this RWC. I suspect those are about Foster's chances of being appointed head coach on his own merits. If he is able to put together his own strong cartel - perhaps higher.

Yeah, I reckon we're 50/50. So not far off the bookies.
With Foster, Wayne Smith jumped in unasked and said basically if you judge him on Super form, you don't accept that people can learn and grow. That, and I was not at all convinced that Hansen would make the step up to head coach from assistant. The role sometimes brings out the best in people.
All that said, I still get nervous about Foster as AB Head Coach. Am a little concerned just typing it

I agree, the WC Result will largely dictate the outcome. If NZ win it would be hard to tell Foster he isn't right for the job. You can only hope his assistants are very good. Conversely if Wales or Ireland win you could imagine Gatland and Schmidts value goes up. It will be interesting for sure.
In Fosters defence, Hansen is no mug and must think highly enough for him to be in his team.

Foster is a very good coach. Just not a good head coach imo.
If Gatland wins the RWC, why would he take on the ABs? To win it with Wales would be the greatest triumph he could ever have. Nothing, but nothing, could top that. He wins it, and he won't take the ABs, I reckon.

Whilst I agree winning the world cup would be hard to beat, Gatland is still first a Kiwi and an All Black. Surely that alone is a big enough driver to want to coach one of the best sides in rugby. I haven't lived in NZ for 16 years yet my pride and support of the All Blacks hasn't changed, I suspect it is the same for Gatland.

Leon Macdonald musta entered the conversation now!
Back to back wins!

Is that Leons doing or the solid foundations Tana has laid?

Hah! Tana just built off what JK left.
and HE just worked from Lam. That's it - Lam is the key; next AB coach

Dave Rennie has shrugged off suggestions that he is in line to coach the Wallabies after the World Cup, saying that he would not quit his role with Glasgow Warriors for the Australian job. Murmurings within Australian rugby circles hinted that Rennie would be Rugby Australia’s favoured option to take over from incumbent coach Michael Cheika from 2020 onwards if Wales coach Warren Gatland and England coach Eddie Jones were unavailable for the position.
However, Rennie put those rumours to rest when quizzed about the topic by The Telegraph. “It’s just a bit of speculation, as often happens when there’s a potential job up for grabs,” he said. “I certainly haven’t spoken to anyone, and my contract with Glasgow takes me through until the middle of 2020. I’d imagine from an international point of view most of these jobs are going to be gobbled up straight after a World Cup. “I knew that was probably going to be the case when I signed on for another season, so it’s just speculation. “You never say never, but what I’ve said is I’m assuming that, like a lot of teams, they’ll probably make changes in coaches immediately after the World Cup. That’s November 2019. I’m committed here until July 2020, so that’s why it’s unlikely.”

If Foster pulls together a Cartel of Gatland (or Schmidt if there's any of his fluffers still around) and Robertson then fans might feel a little bit more confident.
