Dagg always gets there but has this bloody annoying habit of seemingly swinging off guy's legs and hips and falling off the tackle.

@nzzp I'd not seen that of Barrett, he always looked pretty complete to me, goal kicking aside. Mind you we don't get to see a lot of NZ rugby up here unless you really search it out. The internationals for sure and a bit of SR but not much else.

It's fair to say that you guys have been blessed with your options at 10 for some time and, going on the SR final, Mounga looks like to goods too.

Beaudy's defence was terrible. I think a classic example was in that 38-27 game in South Africa at Ellis Park where he got trampled by de Villiers (and then returned the favour 5 minutes later).

not sure 'hiding' a 10 at the back is the right way to describe it, in my view when a 10 drops back, often it is more so they can field the kicks and assess options to go forward again as the 10 is usually your 'general' anyway, so they assess options and look to attack or kick for territory, and in both those situations, having your 10 back there to make that decision is usually the best for the team.

As a defender, why would you want a poor defender as your last line of defence? How often is a FB called upon to make a covering tackle, surely you want a good defender there when on defence.

I think it just suits a game plan to have your orchestrator at the back more of then then not.

Agree with you in open play but I think people are alluding to the times on set piece defence where the defence is realigned without the 10 in place. After a phase or two it morphs into your description.

    @machpants Errr, no.

DC is a lovely man who says nice things because he doesn't want to hurt people.

Some arseswipe journalist asks him about 1st five at a public event, so he has to answer. And it's a lovely non-offensive lot of mumble too.

Do you think he'd actually say "I reckon Mo'unga is better ... " and take the heat that comes from that? Especially with the likely Cantab bias allegations? Why would he do such a thing, especially as it would derail the reporting on the event he was there to promote?

Next you'll be telling me I should take rugby advice from Ali Williams. Though he's the opposite side -- provocative things merely for the sake of being provocative.

Please don't tarnish the Allblacks by comparing them to the Blues.

    And Ronan O'Gara.

O'Gara isn't fit to look at DC's discarded undies with a telescope. Nor BB's for that matter.

Possibly taken one too many blows to the head.

I always knew there was something a little awry with DC. He did afterall β€œconsider” a move to the Blues....

That photo reminds me what a wanky fanboy John Key was. What an absolute dick.

So, one bit season (out injured for a period) of good super rugby gets you the starting spot over the proven player at international level. Hmmm sorry I'm not drinking that cool aid.

If I was able to hear Carter's actual thoughts, I would give them great weight. Especially in private after a beer or two and he was being candid.

But pressed at short notice while promoting something else? He'll give exactly the sort of non-answer he gave.

Probably best to chat with him at breakfast. You could then preface all of your rugby analysis with "well, when I had breakfast with DC...."
