All Blacks v France Test #2

@nepia if it's anything like he's been playing for the Chiefs this year then I don't think Retallick will add too much. His form has been well below his best and he's caught the penalty bug too.

Seriously, WTF have you been smoking in the ACT or Canterbury this year? He's singlehandedly kept the Chiefs in games and without him (and Cane) they wouldn't be in spitting distance of making the finals.

I can only conclude you know absolutely nothing about rugby.

There was very little to be gained by the ABs practicing against a short backline.
We gained more by pretending there wasn't an overlap and playing our normal game. So DMac wasn't necessarily wrong to do what he would normally do.
We need to work out how to beat rush defences, not how to trash sides short a man.

Now rewatched first half, where ABs weren't too bad. Four takeaways:
-
In early play ABs were leaving a big gap about two out from rucks. French really excellent at exploiting that. One try that ought to have been scored and another dangerous break by Bellau;
-
Moody/Barrett (S) combo seemed off. It seemed that in second and third scrums power from Barrett not coming through well. After missed try the LH hit was poor and scrum struggling from there. Next scrum Moody won the hit, but power seemed to stutter and his knee went to ground, after which French scrum mullered us;
-
DMac was hopeless when we got scrums close to French line. Instead of manipulating things to exploit extra man he tried to do too much. But in broken play his ability to find space is superb;
-
French made maybe four turnovers, at least three close to flanks. Abs guilty of mot having support players clean out after e.g. Taylor went to ground. Sloppy.
Now watched second. Third quarter OK, but fourth abysmal. On the above:
-
Some gaps still close to ruck, and which French worked by passing back close in; and
-
Moody's knee on ground again at first scrum and replaced. Hard to judge Karl T, as French props swapped out after his first scrum. But replacement AB front row right on top of replacement French one.
Thought ALB was very collected and played well. I'd have subbed Crotty instead of him.
I thought Ardie was quite good.

@act-crusader Seriosly bro, BBBR has been consistently the Chiefs best on the paddock, and as said above has kept us in games where without him we would have lost by a country mile. I imagine he will do the same for the ABs i.e. shore up the loose defence around the ruck, empower the scrum, give us another option in the LOs and generally tackle anything that moves.

Which is great and most probably accurate.
But without him, the ABs are emminently beatable.
A very precarious situation non?

@mikethesnow From time to time all teams get beaten - yes even Wales and the ABs.
However, it's more about getting our collective shit together and improving the focus for this week. -

Well, yes. We're at it lowest ebb for some time having lost six hundred cap players after the last world cup, and still having some injury issues combined with losing reasonably got players up north.
So, yeah he's important to us. But give us another year or so and see who gets thrown up by the talent pyramid. We've just gone from very very hard to beat, to hard to beat. Given the current crop, I'll take that.

I thinking making the N uppercase gives this a whole different meaning when talking to a Welshman.

Just surprised that Shag & Co haven't got plan B, C, D, E, F and G for BBBR as they appear to have for other positions

My plan is to pray for another generational talent to appear from nowhere.
I have had beers, but so far it appears a good plan.

@shadowtrooper you forgot strong ball carrier that makes it over the advantage line.

So, which test do we judge the pack on? Last week, where they looked good, or this week, where they looked barely Super rugby standard?
My question marks over a number of those forwards were laid bare this weekend. S Barrett is too slow to be a mobile player, and not powerful enough to be a tight player. L Whitelock is safe, but slow and far from dynamic. Franks has cement tied to his feet (watch him trying to adjust on defense for the first bombed French try). Squire whacked that winger, then got hurt, but I've never been convinced.
Harris, Savea, and Fifita keep proving they are not good enough.
The big problem for us is, who else is there? My favourite lock in Super rugby at the moment is way too short. I think Taufua is too small (mass still plays its part). Who else turns up and stands out every week in Super Rugby?
What if Coles and Read never play again?
-
I think it is worth remembering that we often see a drop off in intensity and standards when for example there is an early blow out in the score or we are playing a team that has no chance of beating us like a rwc pool game. I think the red card had the same effect here. As much as we want them to be on 100% of the time it doesn't happen like that.
The lack of recent rugby for a few key guys, BB being taken out of the game by a reckless act* and then emptying the bench early are probably bigger causes of the shit performance than senior players being past it.
I do however think these sorts of games can help highlight guys who aren't up to it in the first place because they can't even use the motivation of trying to cement a spot to maintain their standards.*lets start focusing on that rather than having sympathy for the Frenchy.

That’s a truly shit analysis.
What about McKenzie showing that he is a world class 10?
Won’t he long before he overtakes BarrettYou are taking the piss right? Thought McKenzie well and truly showed that hes not a first fives asshole.

yea that's mealy mouthed bullshit. The bench was emptied because the starting forwards were shit. And then the bench forwards were shit. That wasn't 100%, that wasn't even 90%. The French had a crack up front, and we completely failed to go with them.
