I've never seen a coach get more friendly press. The herald has never criticised him.
Now this article doesn't include the words "Tana" "Umaga" or "coach"
The article has been edited
Coach Tana Umaga liked the fact that his side played with more heart and urgency in Auckland than they did in Cape Town
Hi, Gregor Paul! Do your job and stop being a Umaga sycophant please! I await competent rugby journalism..

Put myself through the pain again and watched the game again at home.
We kicked far too much ball away in this game, especially in that 1st half. You'd think the coaches would've relayed a message to the boys during halftime to stop kicking when we're not deep, but we kept kicking in the 2nd half. We even kicked a few times when they had a man in the bin - geez.
Akira and Patty were stand-outs in the pack. Outside of those two, the rest of the pack played soft.
Both 10s weren't good and lacked game sense. I wanted to chop Perofeta's leg off in that first half.
Moala was good out on the wing. Defense is still a bit off, but it was his best game for us in a while. I'd keep him out on the wing next week if Nanai is out.
Outside of two poor kicks, Faiane put in a massive shift and was one of the few guys who brought energy throughout the whole game. Need to give him and Rieko more game time together.
Seeing the lack of talk by the so-called leaders during breaks is so damning, although that's not too surprising, because it's kind of been that way for awhile.

Really??
Patrick McKendry wrote about it a few weeks ago. Basically said the Blues have extended him, they just haven't announced it. They definitely won't announce it now when we're losing. If we go on a mini-run of wins, you can bet they'll announce it then.

Bring Back Jed Rowlands.
Seriously, Tana is possibly the worst coach we’ve ever had. If he had any class he’d resign after that performance.
This is the third game this season we’ve given up an early 19 point deficit. The team is not prepared well and looks very disorganised. The only way we score is off individual brilliance. When we go back to the dumb arse game plan it all looks disjointed and ends up with aimless kicking.
The board has to sack him. How many 60 point losses will it take I wonder?
-
My 2c.
Perofeta. Seriously disappointing. Fucking hopeless in the first half. And quite lame in the second. Give me DMac any day. Will never be an All Black. No wonder they start Gatland.
Quite impressed with the Shorks. Big. Strong. Fast...
Literally laughed hysterically when Perofeta scored the go-ahead try.
How the hell do you then concede that many points?
Akira still looking like an AB 6/8.
So. If you're planted with 2 feet on the ground before someone jumps. Then that someone jumps and falls over you why is that guy not carded? All you were doing was standing there. Crap ruling.

Well it sounds like he’s extended his pay check regardless of performance and there’s zero media pressure on him.
I can’t see him taking responsibility

Man, these are tough times for Blues supporters.
Had a good night overall with the boy, was fun getting along to Eden Park, but fucking hell the Blues are exasperating to watch. The crowd got into it as best they could, made some noise and tried to generate some atmosphere, but the Blues just didn't show up to play. Honestly the fans deserve so much better than that.
At one point I looked at my boy and he was sitting there with his head in his hands after the Sharks scored yet again. I'm starting to think I shouldn't be subjecting him to this, it's getting borderline child abuse. Poor little man - we've been to a few Blues games now and he's still yet to see them win a game live.
A few random thoughts anyway:
- The Blues were taking an age to get back onside after a half break, and they missed a fucking shitload of straightforward tackles. The defense was utterly woeful, every time the Sharks had the ball you thought they were going to score.
- On the flip-side, the Blues actually looked very dangerous with ball in hand and scored some very good tries, albeit more through individual brilliance than anything else.
- So given they actually looked dangerous with ball in hand, why the hell did they keep kicking it? And not just kicking, but fucking awful kicks.
- When the Sharks had a man in the bin the Blues decided to keep the ball in hand and they started carving up. Then when he came back on they reverted to type - Faiane's two kicks were criminal and a big moment in the match - the Sharks promptly scored after being gifted possession on a platter and the momentum swung back their way. But the woeful kicking was a feature throughout. Just utterly braindead stuff.
- Rieko is wasted at 12. Every time there was something on I thought "spin it to Rieko... oh wait he's not out there to take advantage of the space". He's the best winger in the world, get him the fuck back on the wing.
- Moala should be on the other wing - he's powerful as fuck and his lack of passing/vision is not an issue out there. He played well.
- Akira was awesome again, and it was great to see Pat T hitting a bit of form. His try was the moment of the night.
Conceding 63 points at home to the Sharks, who are pretty fucking far from the best team in the comp (the Rebels slapped them!) is absolutely nowhere near good enough. It's one thing to lose, but to lose in that manner then heads have to roll. Sorry Tana, the buck stops with you.

Agree. Wellington were transformed with their new coaches. So Gibbes (with Bell) could be one quality option although they need another year to prove themselves. although I don't want to lose him. But also dislike seeing a display like this one. It was poor. Tana has had his time. Time to bite the bullet and move on.

Perofeta was rubbish. What a disappointment. He looks like he needs to spend more time in the gym. I wonder in general what the player conditioning is like with the Blues as the players seem a bit underdone.Whereas with the Canes players are transformed.

That is hilarious that the article was edited. Paul if you’re still reading the Fern, will the Blues have to lose to the Reds before you provide some critical analysis of Umaga....

Christ at this juncture, the Cheetahs, Force and Kings don't look so bad
-
Looking at the shot of Tana in the coaches box after the match, he looked like he was ready to walk - wtf do you say to a team in the sheds after a loss like that?? I'm damned if I know.
I'm beginning to think Henry may be one of the few that just may be able to turn them around. Thought of Scmidt as well, but I dare say he;s never going to want to coach such a rabble. There has to be accountability somewhere in the squad. ffs no excuses for missing that many tackles - it seems like even the senoir players don't want to shoulder responsibility for how and why they play as they do time after time.
-
Are Blues fluffybunnies serious? Fuck.
I can't even formulate a coherent sentence. You couldn't win a loaded chook raffle.
You are the Force of NZ

-
@mariner4life Settle down we're not that good.
-
Terrible time for the Blues to (really) go to custard with the Warriors belting the Roosters in Sydney by 30 points.
-
So they came back and that muppet Fiane, (whoever rated him?), kicks two awful aimless kicks and momentum turns. Not that I think the Blues would have won because they didn't dominate the forwards.

@broughie I almost laughed when he had a second go and then it was such an awful attempt I stopped immediately.
They were clearly under instructions to kick for territory, he wasn’t the only one kicking ball away. So while the execution was poor, a decent coach would have implemented a game plan that played to his teams strengths.
Or selected or recruited (he’s had three years) a team to play to that game plan.
-
The 63 points the Sharks scored is the highest score the Blues have ever conceded, equalling the 63 the Chiefs scored when winning 63-34 at Hamilton in 2009.

Yes the worst score at home, the next worst was 51 points 14 years ago
It's also worth noting this is only 5 matches after the most embarrassing defeat in the Blues history: 21-48 vs the Sunwolves

Or selected and recruited players with the necessary basic skills. Every 12 in the country should be competent kicking off both feet. No matter what other attributes they bring.

He's normally a good punter, but those were some duds. 12s probably average 5 kicks a year in this era, so it's not as big a need at 12 anymore.

He did. But he plays Collins at fullback.....

Trainor, you tool!
Bullshit call that. Replay showed Trainor was stationary on both feet before the Shork player left the ground. Jumping player jumped into him. He created the issue.
-
@kirwan TBF Collins was the least of the Blues problems last night, in fact, easily the pick of the backs

I particularly liked how he called “touch” as the last line of defence for a couple of those Sharks trys.
My example was more about Tana’s poor selection anyway
-
@kirwan half the team were playing touch last night...as for his selection issues, these have been contentious since he started at the blues having his faves and playing them ahead of better players.
Blues problems start with him but they are much deeper than just him...the 9-10 axis is another big problem too, but then that is nothing new.
-
Don’t disagree, but when you see the fullback just fling out an arm and not even try to tackle you know its going to be a long night.
So I disagree he was the least of our problems, he’s a consistent sack of shit.
-
Maybe the Blues need to gather into a circle and focus on their breathing after scoring a try
-
You should be sweet for a win this weekend though, you've only got the severly depleted Chiefs!
Seriously though,I am a bit annoyed at the timing of this result as I can see them coming out quite hard against us to prove a point.
I am hoping your lot just roll over and say tickle my tummy like they did against the sharks

Super coach will play Reiko at 10, bench Akira and make Collins captain. You could bet your house on a Chiefs win.
I repeat, he’s the worst coach we’ve ever had and we’ve had some shit coaches.
-
Haven't read all the above but went to the game and have only just got over the disgrace that I witnessed and are in a position to be able to post. A few thoughts...
Perofeta - is farkin rubbish. Kicks woefully in open play and generally very poor at option taking. Even my 8 year old son could see how bad he was and made comments at numerous times that they should bring on a proper 10 like Gatland.
Option taking in general - not sure why we weren't taking the kicks at goal early in the game. I thought it must be due to Perofeta being shithouse from the tee but he managed a couple of nice conversions so think it must have been something else. The Sharks though were ruthless when given the opportunity. De Preez knocked them over every time when given the chance.
Tackling - seemed optional, potentially even discouraged? Wtf was that all about.
Crowd - very low turnout even with free kids entry but understandable given easter long weekend and many away. Had the family in the lounge with me and pretty sure the only thing that kept us there was the quality beer battered fries and the cold drinks. I ended up putting the warriors game on the skygo and miss 5 ended up playing on the wifes phone and managed to order some pizzas playing what she called 'Pizza Game' but was actually the hells pizza app. Luckily a phone call saved that disaster!
Also, can someone remind me where Duffie is at? Must be injured or something?

He and Ofa Tuungafasi had one of their two mandated rest games. So he's not injured and should be back this week.

If he can't turn it round this weekend and has another humiliator, surely he will be too proud and resign? Surely?
and by a humiliator, I mean lost to us by around 30-40 points.

I doubt it, if you don't resign after shipping 63 points on Eden Park when else would you?
