@Bones arms used, angle of approach, accidental, player crouching. just a standard tackle assist that unfortunately ended badly - as happens in rugby pretty frequently.
if he had come in on the angle like SBW and put a shoulder into the head, then that's a different story. -

on vunipola - the charge-down was nothing. it was marginally late, if at all, there was no intent to injure, his weight was going across barrett not into him, didn't put the shoulder in, just a big pile of nothingness from a fatty who can't change direction quickly - and very similar to one of ours minutes earlier that wasn't even penalised.
the clean-out. can you judge it on intent? some are calling it a deliberate shoulder to the head - straight red - but i just don't see that contact occurring in any meaningful way. he sort of rolls over the top of him, then (on repeated watching) barrett cops a bit of a forearm at the end of it. he may have been trying to take his head off and been saved from himself by barrett rolling in the same direction, but if you miss a high tackle you don't get sent off for it - a yellow card was fine. -

The questions is, is the suspension just for 4 weeks or for 4 games? The Blues have only one game left in Super Rugby. A suspension of 4 weeks is a bit of a joke if he wouldn't have played in two of those weeks anyway. But if the suspension is for 4 games, then SBW will miss one SR game and two All Blacks games on top of this week's Lions game, assuming he'll be in the squad for the RC.

@reprobate See I saw a bloke deliberately targeting an unaware player on the ground, diving off his feet and leading with the forearm towards the head. Lucky for both parties he didn't seem to connect as intended - but he still connected.
Edit: and tackling is a part of the game - a forearm to the face of a player on the ground away from play isn't.

I think your perfect storm comment is too right. In Chicago it was midfield injuries, fatigue, yellow card, no second row and a strong Irish performance. Here I think the weather and the red card combined were a mountain to climb. Sorry despite the comments about how great the Lions played it would have been an embarrassment if they had not won. There disipline was shocking and with a man advantage they should have won . They can take some satisfaction that they can improve in this area and that they actually seemed to be more patient with ball in hand than ABs. I thought Sexton took an age with the ball waiting for the second line of runners and ALB was the only back who defended aggressively. Also some concern that our wings seem incapable of challenging high balls offensively alla Ben Smith, I would thing Jordie at 15 must be a real consideration. Two out and out wings hurt us in Chicago and did not help us in wellington.

Itoje was part of an eight man pack which did not subdue the AB seven. He was pinged offside at least twice and could or should have been more, penalties which threatened to sink Lions. Pulled off a good maul sack and made a couple of big tackles but the collective result suggests the less showy aspects were nothing special. Yep, I agree with you.
The balance of pro's/cons is key.
If the pro's are make a big tackle and a big break that are eye-catching but make no contribution to the scoreboard (or at least the momentum of a match)
but the cons are 2 dumb penalties that concede 6 points or make an attack break down, then I'd settle for a non-flashy player who does the grunt work (like Whitelock).
Rugby is a team game - all the bits and pieces working together is what wins games and tournaments.Itoje will presumably learn not to concede so often.
Sean O'Brien used to infuriate me by the way he could not resist some dumb challenges at the tackle. However, he has improved over the years to be one of the few players in the squad that many Kiwis seemed to rate before the Lions arrived. -
@Billy-Tell Good work. I now see that McBride didn't play in the tests V Australia in 66. Forgot Leonard and Evans (in SA 1997).

@Megweya if refs let him get away with it I doubt he will learn...but I expect he will get picked up, some of those were so blatant you wonder what the ref was looking at.
But hey, why stop if the ref only seems to ping you every now and again, he rolled the dice and won.

@booboo History now, but I can't see any way that if Garces had reviewed the SOB footage during the game he would have escaped a YC. Would be interesting to know what the protocol is if judiciary committee determine it ought to have been YC but wasn't. Assume it's card marked but no other action.
