    This is super interesting

    Breakdown looks key.

I say that the Chiefs' scrum is the key. If it is as poor as it has been, it turns positive possession into penalties against and balls lost. All season they have defended well, forced a turnover, only to squander the possession with a poor scrum.

After that it is discipline. The Chiefs give away a LOT of stupid penalties and cards and have done for years. To be fair, most of them are at the breakdown, so that does overlap with your point. The last game between the two sides was decided by a penalty at the breakdown, with a Chiefs player not thinking.

This is a cool story in the lead up to this game. At the beginning of the season Laidlaw put a Canes 10 and 15 jersey on the ground and told Love to choose one. Love obviously chose the 15 jersey and the rest is history but what a play by Laidlaw to make a player choose.

Hurricanes star Love out of 'retirement' to make No.15 jersey his own in breakout campaign

The fullback has made up for lost time, helping the Super Rugby Pacific tabletoppers to the semi-finals.

Doesn't say much for the coaches back then

"I feel, when I first came into the Hurricanes, I got cluttered with too much information," he admitted. "I was trying to be a player I wasn't, but the last eight months, I've figured out where I stand and what I want to achieve, and the player I want to be known as.

What do you mean? you been coached by him yourself? or you have heard some accounts from players?

I’ve heard that Holland was a coach that went through the motions a bit, never really changed things up from a culture point of view. It also showed through his selections, even when players weren’t performing he would still select them i.e Blackwell, Prinsep, Savea etc.

So by Laidlaw coming in it’s really freshened up the environment. Every interview with a Canes player this year they’ve highlighted the difference Laidlaw has made to get the best out of the players and the culture he’s created to bring the team together I.e coffee catch-ups, lunchs, all those little things that connect the whole Hurricanes organisation together. Laidlaw seems to have brought an innovative approach into the Canes through his sevens background vs when Holland was in charge it was almost same shit different year which made it frustrating as a fan.

Connection is something I’ve heard Laidlaw quote a number of times now and it’s probably the most important thing towards creating a successful team. Razor emphasised that when he was coaching the Saders and just look how it went for them. Im glad Holland is in the past.
