I am still of the idea that Ozzie keeps 5, we ditch NPC and have say 8 teams, plus Moana and Drua (and some Arg and Japan one day) but the comp is much longer. Not squeezed in but full home and away and large play offs series - quarters semis final. Most NZ and Oz players don't play enough rugby, esp compared to NH.

it won't happen unless super rugbs collapses. NZ I hope stick with 5 team but take steps to ensure one team doesn't always win year after year

And what about SA. 4 teams then up to 6. Now back to a manageable 4 teams. More is not always better

It kinda looks like you kiwis are obsessed with having more teams than the Aussies

Maybe if Fiji say had 6 teams (and had better team than us). We might let our ego's get the better of us and make an unwise decision to increase our team numbers.

But with Aust and SA. No

I certainly agree the increase in teams will initially lower the level, but it won't be so obvious as all the teams will be at around the level of Oz/Drua/MP. The problems ATM is that (4) NZ teams are so much better, along with an unsustainable NPC. A longer session, mid ground performance wise, with more players full time but less players Pro would be ideal imo.

    But who really knows

Pretty cool clip that shows the senior players reacting to what is happening and adjusting tactics.

Couple of culture-killers in that huddle!

In an exclusive interview with The Weekend Australian, Jones said what had become clear over the past five months was Australian rugby has been unable to foster the elite on-field leadership needed to win a World Cup [.]

Former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, a friend of Jones’s who was in Wallabies camp in the build-up to this World Cup, observed some parts of Australia’s high-performance program were 15 years behind the All Blacks.

What has become clearer to Jones in recent times is the lack of strong leadership in Australian ranks. While the omission of veteran playmaker Quade Cooper and former captain Michael Hooper has caused consternation and debate, Jones says such decisions were made to address what he has previously described as “deeper cultural issues” within the Wallabies.

“Well, you know good teams are always about good leaders and about good senior players and their ability to generate a strong team,” Jones said.

“And I think what’s happened over the last period of time – there’s been a there’s been a lack of leadership coaching in Australian rugby and there’s players who come through to the international level that don’t have the fundamental skills of leadership and the mental skills and preparation that are needed to be at your best consistently.”

Looks like that worked a treat!

So we can look forward to more than another decade before Australia play a slow 6-foot 6 fullback on the wing..

That video was exactly what they are currently missing. Jones really put together the wrong team. They were so quick to get rid of Rennie for Jones. Biggest mistake Aus rugby have ever made.

I think even the current All Blacks are 15 years behind the All Blacks

I wonder where Aussie rugby union would be now if Raelene Castle hadn’t resigned ….due to bullying allegedly from a clique ticked off Phil Kearns didn’t get appointed to the position. She had the credentials to do a good job and the grit to make the tough decisions eg Folau.

@antipodean I’m not into league but did a quick quiz online and see she was implicated in a salary cap blowout = financial issue for the club?

If failing upwards are good credentials then I agree. Didn't she resign Folau for 4 years after his initial comments?

    Edit: Yep

I don't think that was an unreasonable decision. At the time Folau gave RA assurances that he would abide by the code of conduct and wouldn't repeat his dickishness. She accepted his word, and was happy to give him another chance. Seems reasonable to me - maybe the value of the contract was too high, but that's pretty standard for ex-league wingers going to the Wallabies

Wasn't Castle's biggest failure rejecting the Fox Sports deal, then having to take a much lower offer from Stan?

Ahhh the halcyon days of Raelene Castle. I was just just checking in to this thread on Thursday morning UK time to see if Wales had stopped scoring yet?

I think Fox's initial offer was only around $20m, then they increased it (reportedly $35-40m) when other bidders came in, but they had already started shedding their rugby commentating team the year before.

So likely not a much lower offer and in all honestly from a selfish fan point of view the quality of broadcast is so much better on Stan.

Edit: In other stupid Oz rugby news I saw a headline today that they're trying sign Angus Crichton (league forward) on a multi year big money contract.

That's an incredibly generous assessment. Completely disagree. It was a dumb thing to do and they got burnt badly. That's on her.
