@chimoaus I dont believe that place exists any longer...
haha I have exactly that conversation with TR Jnr about how much 'easier' they have it now (similarly with the 20-somethings about Tinder making thier lives easy) often they follow one another on social media through common friends, nek minut they are 'dating', video calling every day for weeks on end, nek minut, they break up despite not ever meeting...
back in the day, standing in the hallway, with the 5m extension on the phone cord for a bit of privacy, only for your brother to pick up the spare phone and call you a dickhead or something, or a parent pick up saying they needed to use the phone so you had to get off, when you'd only been on it for an hour and ignored all the call waiting beeps....good old days when life was simple.

Cordless phones were such a game changer. Always good to take one in your room so no one could hear.
Siblings were annoying though ( not mine, I’m an only child ) but I was going out with a twin, her sister loved answering and pretending to be her. I wasted a lot of sweet talk on the wrong one and they used to piss themselves about it.

I was in NZ last year, I'm coming over in a couple of weeks time. Hotels are more than double the price, rental cars are triple the price. What is happening? Surely that can't just be inflation?
Hmm, I just checked my usual Coolangatta hotel and it is roughly 75% more than the last time I was there (which was school holidays).
Da fuq.

It's crazy how expensive it used to be to call long distance. I remember working at a call centre in Brisbane while at uni and there was a guy who worked there in the evening exclusively to pay for long distance calls to his girlfriend in Sydney. I suggested they just chat on the internet and he looked at me like I was insane.
My old man is German and every call to Deutschland was basically Hello, how's everyone, goodbye in less than 5 minutes.

@Nepia this! we've been over a couple of times once we were able too after COVID including xmas just been....and now we thought it would get in early and book flights for next xmas...over $2k from melb to chch
I don't bother going back at Xmas time due to the cost - although it would be nice to go back for Xmas hangi.
One thing I did get cheap was my flights, as AirAsia is now flying Syd - Auk, and I have a bunch of Covid credits with them that I could partially use. To make me more grumpy though they can only be used on actual ticket cost (not fees etc) even though they were for ticket AND fees.

Yeah I vaguely remember calls to my Grandparents in Scotland….
Lots of awkward pauses and pardons and crackling and disconnections and apparently it cost a fortune.
My boys can video call their grandparents whenever they want ( all NZ based but still, doesn’t matter where in the world they are )
As an ex telecom salesman I remember yarning to the real old school managers…..
( This is back when I thought these phones were flash )
Apparently brick phones cost thousands and each call ( in the 80s ) was about $5.50 a minute !

What the... we're looking at booking some for £1800... maybe you should see if you can go around the world and throw in a second destination!

@chimoaus when I was living in the UK with the old dial up modem, my pc picked up a virus and what it did was turn off the modem sound so you didn't hear it reconnecting to a premium rate site.
Fortunately it was the 2nd to last bill before I came back to NZ, was like £400 or something extortionate, I rang them up (with my best Aus accent) and told them I wasn't paying and they would be better off trying to stop this happening in the future as I was heading g home to Aus next week and they wouldn't find me...
-
@taniwharugby oh yeah, a virus eh

If you're prepared to fly shitstar, you get what you deserve.

My first career was in Telecoms with the NZ Post Office. The tech was hugely expensive to maintain then and the capacity tiny - the average bandwidth of a household broadband or 5G connection would be about 10 times that between Wellington and Auckland then and about 200 times that between NZ & Europe.
But if you were in he know, you could call anywhere quite cheaply. God I miss the days of phone phreaking & Blue Box hacking.

I think I'd risk it to save $650.
