@crucial the link i saw just had her tweet that said there would be a press conference tomorrow, what did you see?
Your link.
Barty said her perspective on life and tennis had changed since she made her comeback and added she was physically “spent”.
“There was a perspective shift in me in the second phase of my career that my happiness wasn’t dependent on the results,” she said.
“Success for me is knowing that I’ve given absolutely everything, everything I can.
“I’m fulfilled, I’m happy, and I know how much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself.
“I just don’t have that in me anymore. I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top level anymore.
“I am spent. I just know physically I have nothing more to give and that, for me, is success.
“I’ve given absolutely everything I can to this beautiful sport of tennis and I’m really happy with that.
perhaps translated as "if I get slammed in my own country for enjoying a beer after winning the Aus Open on TV, the rest of you can go get f*cked, Im done"

@rancid-schnitzel She's only 25 and not yet married, so I doubt it. The thought occurred to me though. You'd say that in the interview though, wouldn't you?
just saw she is actually married
-
@kiwiwomble I don't think she is married yet. Engaged last year and weren't looking for a long engagement from all accounts.
-
@magpie_in_aus once again...have not read the actual article, just saw this headline
-
@kiwiwomble maybe that is why she retired. Her husband found out about her fiancee. She would have got away with it if it wasn't for the blasted fern and their meddling dog.

Absolute fair play to her and respect on an awesome career. I guess her ultimate goal was to win the Aussie open and once she'd done that her drive dropped off. The commitment it takes to be at the top of a sport like Tennis is no small thing, so if the heart isn't 100% there, then why continue.
All the best to her.

She won Wimbledon in front of her idol Goolagong Cawley too. After the first retirement it would seem she feels there is more to life than just tennis. You can't really argue about that. If she gets bored she could come back in a couple of years, and who would bet against her?

The individual sports like tennis and golf where there is worldwide profile and coverage, plus high stakes prize money - the psychological and mental aspect would be so much greater in my view than a team sports.
Yes there is almost unbelievable pressure and expectation on certain individuals in team sports - but I reckon it’s a whole different level for these sports.
Congrats to Barty on a great career. I personally don’t think she will be back.

What are people's thoughts on the Russian/Belarus players being banned from competing in Wimbledon?
“It is a significant rebuke of the sport’s oldest Grand Slam tournament and, in a technical sense, renders the event an exhibition without any ranking points at stake.”

Good. Proper decision.

Wimbledon Semi Finalist Cameron Norrie is another Kiwi Pom who apparently supports the ABs.
Norrie was a young pro flying the Kiwi flag and asked NZT for some funding to help him. In their wisdom they said no. And that's how we let a guy who would have been the highest ranked NZ tennis player maybe since Anthony Wilding (?) slip through our fingers
