@catogrande I believe his first name is Doubtless. But I'm only reading the post directly above yours...

The mental side of all elite sport, but most especially these individual sports is just incredible.
Mark Richardson right - got the spinning yips and reinvented as a batsman?

@mariner4life Doubtless Ian Baker-Finch.
Yeah - I suffer "almost intense pressure" playing shit golf when I occasionally get in the position to beat friends who are slightly better than me. I have largely overcome it by realizing that it matters not a fuck. I couldn't play to win a major - fucking hopeless.
I think it's why the ABs have somewhat underperformed at the Rugby World Cup - because a skill-based game is more likely to turn to shit under pressure than a muscle game.
That's the one but that isn't the one I was thinking of.

@rancid-schnitzel typical patriarchy, thats the only reason she would retire
seriously though, lots of players have been preggers and just taken that time off rather than full on retirement
-
@rancid-schnitzel She's only 25 and not yet married, so I doubt it. The thought occurred to me though. You'd say that in the interview though, wouldn't you?

Not everyone waits until they get married! My eldest was 9 months when I married his mother. But yeah, you'd think she'd mention it if it was the reason. It just seems so random and strange at this stage of the season. And she's only 25 as you say.
I reckon she'll be back though.

She is only a US Open win away from having the set of Grand Slams.
Good on Barty for going out on her own terms.
With the absurd inconsistency of the female players right now, this is really the time for a player like Barty to pile up the Grand Slams. I don't think she's the best or most talented by a long shot, bit she's the most consistent and winning all 4 Slams this year was not out of the question. But if the motivation isn't there (or there's a bun in the oven🙃) then fair enough.

wow, bit of a suprise
Random as hell. Wonder if she's pregnant?
Did you read her reasons? It's not random at all.

@crucial the link i saw just had her tweet that said there would be a press conference tomorrow, what did you see?
Your link.
Barty said her perspective on life and tennis had changed since she made her comeback and added she was physically “spent”.
“There was a perspective shift in me in the second phase of my career that my happiness wasn’t dependent on the results,” she said.
“Success for me is knowing that I’ve given absolutely everything, everything I can.
“I’m fulfilled, I’m happy, and I know how much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself.
“I just don’t have that in me anymore. I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top level anymore.
“I am spent. I just know physically I have nothing more to give and that, for me, is success.
“I’ve given absolutely everything I can to this beautiful sport of tennis and I’m really happy with that.

jokes aside, i read this at the start and assumed there wouldn't be more detail until the press conference
“Today is difficult and filled with emotion for me as I announce my retirement from tennis,” Barty wrote on social media. “I wasn’t sure how to share this news with you so I asked my good friend @caseydellacqua to help me. “I am so thankful for everything this sport has given me and leave feeling proud and fulfilled. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong memories that we created together. “More to come tomorrow at my press conference.”
