I enjoyed the match actually. Canes did well to stay in it even by going up in threes. I did think that I have watched about 20 years of that team though - not a great pack, poor set piece, need a decent 10 and some pretty good backs outside that. It didn't work in the past and is unlikely to now.

The enforcing of the laws may have some unexpected outcomes, but it will be up to the coaches and players how that pans out. Already seem to be a lot of breakdowns that are unattended by the defence, leaving more defenders available but the ball is so quick that there seems to be space anyway. The attacking side seems to get hammered with the penalties too for being off feet, or sealing off if they do show up. It stops the mess of guys on the ground and speeds things up but defenses will adapt. Interesting with so few scrums too and whether that continues.

Less scrums because less phases under pressure and less handling errors because of that?

    Good game, correct result.

I agree with those lamenting the Canes' selections and/or depth. Too many just aren't high Super Rugby standard, including Tiatia, Goosen, van Wyk, JGB, Booth, Prinsep, Kirifi, Blackwell and Armstrong. Fifita is a flanker who can cover lock but the line-out is far too short with Blackwell and Kirifi simply midgets in their positions. Neither Savea or Prinsep are large by position either. Even if they had some tall timber to replace Blackwell and/or if they had Fifita on the blindside they'd have a much taller line-out. It's hard to see where the Canes get a win from and now they have a bye week to fall further behind the leaders; they'll come back 2-3 wins behind the Blues, Crusaders and Highlanders, albeit with a game in hand on the Blues. Best case for the Canes is Chiefs and 'Landers wins then only two teams have two wins. If the Blues win they have three and the Crusaders would have two and with a bye out the way.

Quite possibly. Fewer players around the ball at rucks too? Less chance of the knock on? Might watch one of the games again and see what is actually happening, but they seem almost uncontested at times unless there is a chance of a turnover. I don't think anyone players, coaches (or me) quite have it worked out yet.

The handling skills (even in the rain in the Tron - Nepo aside) have been pretty good. I guess if you don't have offside players in your face when you are receiving it also helps.

@Snowy yeah I’ve been pretty impressed with the handling across all teams thus far.

If the Canes don't improve much as the season goes on, it could increase the chance of Jordie leaving after this season.

A certain poster on here always stalking you might be reason enough to leave though...

The 'clearly onside' ruling is a definite success and should be adopted by WR. They could call it the 'Itoje Ruling'

It's O.K. he can stay, he'll learn to live with the stalking.

We're all good up here thanks.

Still can't used to the penalty rulings. Some of them just look bizarre to me, I would hate to be a casual viewer. Started to annoy me to be honest.

We're also seeing one team getting penalised more than the other. Wonder why? Teams slow to adapt or the refs just watching one team like the Blues thread would have us believe?

Edit - Just saw there is a discussion about this on the Super 20 Thread

In the first half that was the case I think, home town sort of thing. The blues got so hammered they did seem to respond by not going off there feet when with the ball. The Crusaders did the same and got hammered against the home team in the first half (being talked about in that thread as well) then either learnt, or the ref wanted to to flatten the curve as they say these days.

Canes use to have great backs outside 1st 5. Now they are well behind two teams at least

But they have got the cattle. The coaches just need to start selecting them. Bring in Numia at LH, IWL (or Scafton with IWL as a replacement) at lock with Fifita, Flander at 6 and then the pack looks much better than OK

Id like to see Jordie at 2nd 5 with Proctor at centre with Aso and Goosen on the wings and Lam at FB. Lam at FB was first rate for Well during the NPC (I preferred him there to wing) And Aso with his skills has more freedom on the wing than centre

I'd keep the wings and put Rayasi at fullback

I absolutely agree with Jordie to 12 - he played there for NZU20s I think and he started there once last year for Canes and got man of the match.

That is why I said "pretty good" not "great" but yes backs outside 10 haven't really been a problem.

It does look like a reshuffle rather than a change of personnel in some positions in the backs.

Up front, not so much. There is something wrong and strangely enough I thought it was the loosies, just seemed ineffectual as a whole pack though.

@gt12 yep, I’ve been saying for years that he’s a great rugby player but a terrible halfback.

Nah. Happy Yappy little fucker. Perfect for a half back.

Doesn't make s good skipper though.

There’s much more to bring a decent halfback than being talkative. Being good at passing is generally the starting point

You are harsh on Booth. I think he was OK during the few minutes he was on the field.
The Hurricanes pack needs a big reshuffle. I would go with : Mafileo (or Numia) - Coles - Lomax - IWL - Scrafton - Fifita - Savea - Evans.

He's got a big workrate but lacks the necessary bulk in the collisions.

When watching at the stadium, can't tell what the ruck penalties are for, dont really care. Water off a duck's back.

But mother of god, penalty for not releasing quickly enough some submissive weakling who's managed to let his knee brush the grass .... makes me just want to throw my arms up and yell what's the point. Anti-rugby.
