I was seduced by our performance in the QF, but our forwards couldn't make inroads up front today, and everything fell apart from there. England's defence suffocated any chances we created, and they placed an assertive posession game that we couldn't compete with. We were lucky the score was not worse for us

The most annoying thing was the lack of composure. We had to steal that game despite being outplayed...but each half-chance was buried by a forced offload, not avoiding touch etc. Other than not starting Cane, I don't see any other forwards in NZ that could have changed the pack for the better. BFA and maybe Laumape of all people might have helped in the backs.

Think 2020 should be about rebuilding, starting with looking at some up and coming talent for the pack.

Cane's exclusion was baffling, why mess with the blossoming combination of Read, Savea and Cane? Our forwards failed to go up the guts which was a smart play, we seemed obsessed with spreading it wide even though that wasn't working. Not sure that's personnel, rather tactics

Yeah I have to say I was getting angry pretty early in the game thinking of Shags words about wanting height and us being so ineffectual at the lineout.

I thought Shag had made some outstanding selections in the past months but dropping Cane and having Joedie on the bench instead of Bender were two shockers imho. That said congrats to England who were terrific.

    Haaaaa

After Whitelock's hand made contact with Farrell's head to get him out of the ruck, TJ Perenara asked Farrell if he was playing in the Premier League, rather than the Rugby World Cup semifinal.

Surprisingly good! I'm cautious of reading any media for a day or three... but that was pretty balanced

The Whitelock thing, I completely missed him hitting him in the face, it just looked like he pushed him?

@Kirwan Bridge is also good at running good lines. Reiko has X factor though and he wouldn’t have been bundled into touch as easy as Reece or Bridge. Can’t blame these guys though and Rieko lost favor. Lost in in the forwards and the English defense everywhere was immense.

@Bones He kind of palmed him out of the way. No much really. It was karma for his hand in the ruck at the end of the super rugby final.

Huh? Have you not been watching Rieko finding new ways to die with the ball? The only way he wouldn't have been bundled out is because he dropped it.

@Bones maybe in the last couple of games hence he was dropped but ordinarily it was not a characteristic of him.

    I can handle a loss ,

But to be almost out of ideas , completely out coached , was tough to swallow ,

Shag has been good , but this was the worst night of his coaching career , not a nice way to finish.

One thing that would be really good going forward: the backline not being tinkered with every other week. Our midfield has suffered for that especially.

@Catogrande I don't think you're allowed to just say red. I think you have to announce every bottle of wine by it's full name and year.

My dear fellow wine IS red. It's only white wine that's white.

    Astounding arrogance.

    For the NZ post mortem.

    1. Poor mental preparation.
    2. Forward pack was missing. (Related to point 1)
    3. Poor tactics, going wide against a rush defence without earning the right (related to point 1 and 2).
    4. Getting bundled into touch. FFS. (Related to point 3)
    5. Passive defense.

Selections fairly irrelevant for me to the outcome. No B Smith on the bench the only stinker.

We have a lot of players and coaching staff with experience of following up a good knockout game with a stinker from both 2011 and 2015, but no learnings seemingly. Got way too excited by the opportunity to play Ireland. Poor mental prep. A very naive last fortnight.

Yes that is dreaming to think he would have made a difference he lost favor because he lost form and confidence, he wasn’t going to suddenly regain it in the semi. Besides I would take Bridge all day long under the high ball.

England's performance reminded me of our 2011 semifinal performance. A perfect application of suffocating pressure but where the scoreline never quite blew out.
