RWC: All Blacks v Italy (Cancelled) (Pool B)

Jesus these cancellations have left me irrationally bitter.
Currently going through the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression then acceptance.
Stuck between 3,4 and 5 at the moment π€
One ferner, posted about the awesome Saturday we all had lined up and it had me buoyant all week!

I honestly don't know why they've felt the necessity to cancel the games two days before they're due to be played. Why wouldn't you just say we're very worried and there's a strong prospect that we may need to cancel and we'll make a decision at 10am on game day?
I can't recall a cricket match ever being cancelled before it was due to start.

@No-Quarter I mean going out in the QF.
Two romps against Canada and Namibia, a cancelled game, and a game against the Jaapies we usually would have played in the 4N.
Allied with me watching very few of the pool games, so I'm struggling for engagement. I'm more excited about the NPC!
If Japan vs Scotland is called off, and then Ireland take 5 points against Samoa we will get Japan in the quarter final. Could work in our favour. Not that Ireland are up to much this RWC...
No, we will get Ireland since they will be on 16 points, the same as Japan. H2H trumps points difference so Japan will finish on top.
Ohhh OK thanks. Ireland it is then.
Bring on Ireland

Goodness, this is an open invitation to BSG to again poke stick at McLean Park!

@Billy-Tell Especially for Parisse, as he was going to play his last game vs the ABs. He also made his debut against the ABs in 2002 so that would have been a great story.
A 17 year pro career is nothing to sneeze at, even for @MN5
Shame he didnβt get that first and last moment. ABs probably wouldβve given him a nice send off on the field after the game too.

Herald saying this was the team - does this mean Jack Goodhue has the inside running at centre for the knockouts? Aside from Barrett/Whitelock that looks like the top team to me.
-
According to the article below:
Here's what the All Blacks team would have been:
1 Joe Moody
2 Codie Taylor
3 Nepo Laulala
4 Scott Barrett
5 Brodie Retallick
6 Ardie Savea
7 Sam Cane
8 Kieran Read (C)
9 Aaron Smith
10 Richie Mo'unga
11 George Bridge
12Anton Lienert-Brown
13 Jack Goodhue
14 Sevu Reece
15 Beauden BarrettReserves:
16 Dane Coles
17 Ofa Tu'ungafasi
18 Angus Ta'avao
19 Sam Whitelock
20 Matt Todd
21 TJ Perenara
22 Sonny Bill Williams
23 Ben SmithWe'll probably never know for sure.

And to complete the connection, Parisse's first game for Italy at a RWC was in 2003 against......NZ. I was at that test in Melbourne.

Don't understand why they couldn't move the game by a couple of days to later in the week - monday or tuesday even, and to stadiums flocated urther inland away from the eye of the storm.

For those playing quarterfinals (England, France, ABs/Italy etc) that means they would be at a disadvantage for the quarterfinals the following weekend.
-
@Jailbreak7 They couldn't, because like the Cricket World Cup, their rules stipulate that pool matches can't be shifted.
Cancelled Matches
Where a pool Match cannot be commenced on the day in which it is scheduled, it shall not be postponed to the following day, and shall be considered as cancelled. In such situations, the result shall be declared a draw and Teams will be allocated two Match points each and no score registered. For the avoidance of doubt, no bonus points will be awarded. Why they set that rule in the first place is a different question.

Would Italy have beaten NZ? Highly unlikely. Would France have beaten England? Also unlikely.
But man if youβre an Italian fan you must be unhappy as they were still potentially in with a chance of reaching the quarters.
As for England, Argentina game turned into a stroll and French game is not happening, so they will be well and truly rested come the knockouts. It also puts us on a collision course with England should both teams win quarter final.
Just lame
Was always mapping out as an NZ vs England semi though wasn't it? As soon as pools were announced it looked more likely than not that we would meet them.
And yep they could be rested but could equally be underdone. Same for us.
This is correct. However, had everything gone as planned, England would have been coming off two tough pool matches against a fired-up Argentina (this turned into a cake walk because of the red card) and France (this match won't go ahead) and then a QF against the Wallabies before playing (possibly) us in a SF. Under those circumstances, they would be absolutely knackered by the time the SF rolled around and, had they won that match, they would have been well and truly cooked by the time of the final.
I honestly think their odds of winning the whole thing have now improved significantly. Provided they get past Aus, they will be absolutely humming by the time the SF rolls around. Our only hope is that they're completely underdone - like us in 2007 - and that they can't match the Aussies' battle-hardened intensity (a bit like what happened to the Aussies in 2007 or, indeed, the English in 2011).

@gt12 might be able to comment on what usually happens in Japan but my only guess is they didn't want lots of extra people in cities that were meant to be in lock down and/or evacuated. Agree it seems crazy to just flat out cancel it this far out.

@No-Quarter But in this day and age, I'd imagine 90 percent of people have pre-paid holiday accommodation and will turn up there anyway.
