So how do they have a better idea of what NZers want though? What if the best graphic designer in NZ was a German, or French, or American?

From memory, when Hunterwasser designed his flag back in the early 1980s, he (an Austrian) was careful to offer it merely as a suggestion, he didn't expect his flag to be flown, he merely wanted to inject an idea into mainstream Kiwi thought that, hey, you really should identify yourself with a signature flag, and was careful to suggest it should be designed by a Kiwi. I would prefer the design not get outsourced, it should be home-grown.
-

I like the red peak, yet it looks more like a corporate trail marker or a boy-scout banner (someone else mentioned road marker) than it does an emblematic national flag. What makes it work is that it has perfect triangles and the composition (weight) is balanced. It doesn't need to be modified. But I can't say I love it.

Actual designers? Are we not we all designers? What qualification do you require to make you a designer? I could start a design business tomorrow. I did a graphic design paper at Uni.. does that make me a graphics designer? I hope not, because that course was a complete joke, a 3rd year paper that wanked on about inane bullshit and then gave A's out like candy.
-

I don't think it will be loved straight off. But its been pointed out earlier that the Canadian flag by example was not universally liked, in fact there were many that hated it. Yet it is iconic now, and loved
-

Yes, if NZ was the name of a company that makes mountaineering equipment. -

So no one wants anything that looks like it may be a 'logo'. Fair enough, that just leaves traditional style bands of colours and I have the perfect solution...

Beats NZ looking like a company that makes plastic plates ;)

Had you ever seen those plastic plates before? Or is it just because it has been plastered all over social media?

It just highlights how shit the design is. "Oh look I stuck a silver fern and the southern cross together. Job done!".

Edit - and that design makes up two of our final four. And people wonder why there is so much opposition?!
-

On the flip side, it's jolly good to see some debate going around now about the new flag.

I was working out yesterdays plan with my 3 year old son yesterday. Swimming, scooting or the beach were the options. He said swimming at the beach, which I thought was a good idea. So we got to the beach and saw others kids on scooters, he said he wanted to go scooting now.. I pointed out to him that before when I said go scooting, he said nothing, so we went to the beach. He then proceeded to shout the house down.

I wonder how many of the pro-red-peak team, would have a go at me for not being able to read his mind and bring his scooter.
-

And that is the flaw of a panel of 12 people choosing 4 flags that 4 million people are happy with. An impossible task.

They could have at least gone with 4 different designs though. Just saying. :)
-

so how should it be done?

Parliament just select a flag for the 4 million people? get a panel of 12 people to choose it from hundreds of submissions? Let everyone vote on all 300 (or however many) submissions?

Easy to be critical of a process, but no way will satisfy everyone.
