Maybe kiwis are a bit harsher. I remember when we did our mythical best test XI. Now in my opinion Chris Cairns walks into the team, others were less convinced but I'm sure the match fixing ( which incidentally had not one thing to do with his test career ) means we judge him pretty harshly when his performances put him right in the very elite of our best ever cricketers.
Good call. I wouldn't have him in my test XI -- despite his onfield exploits. At his peak, his bowling was superb; won us a few games
He'd make my team batting seven and bowling second change behind Paddles, Bond and Boult but we've already had this discussion a few times haha.

what the hell is the Fern for if you can't rehash old conversations. Now, about Hayman to 8

On the Donald run out: Harsh to blame him, the ball barely trickled past the stumps at the non-striker's end, sensible to get back in your ground in that case.
On Greg Chappell: He abided by the rules as they were at the time - just as Broad did when he edged one to first slip and didn't walk.

What a poor article.
Yep, but it's the new normal for Australia. Honestly, even if he has hand warmers in his pockets for a summer sport, it just looks terrible.
This is going to follow the team around for ages, and they'll just have to cop it.
Yep - this is the penalty Smith has to pay for his actions.
Oh no, wait: he did a year out of the game for his actions
People will take the chance to climb into you. Sport is a bit pantomime theatre - paying spectators are allowed to boo villains, and everyone is welcome to 'tut tut' them in response. I'd boo Quade as much as the next bloke, and abuse (professional) referees, opposing teams, banter with supporters nearby - it's one of the reasons to go to live sport.
Most sensible post I've read on that subject.... there's nothing wrong with a bit of booing. It's usually in good fun and adds to the occasion.
Justin Marshall telling anyone to "grow up" is lauaghable.
-
Some players get booed. Most do not.
What's the difference in each case?
The difference is that the persecuted player has wilfully chosen to do something that sports followers know is beyond the pail. He's broken well established sporting mores and codes of conduct to do with sport.
All rugby players know that you can dish out cheap shots like Quade, and all rugby players know why you shouldn't. Same with Davey. Same with Smith in his leadership role, "tell them what you've done Cameron "
It's not like the societal norms of imprisonment and time served. It's sport or entertainment.
The Paki bowler actually served prison time for falling for a newspaper stunt. The match fixing wasn't even real.
Nobody is being booed who hasn't abused sports well entrenched sporting norms of behaviour. Nobody is having their societal rights refused. Part and parcel of being in the public eye and the riches that follow

Marshall saying anything even remotely sensible is laughable but I have to respectfully disagree. Time to forget about it and move on Canterbury....

It's not a big deal, there's nothing mean or malicious in it... It's pantomime theatre stuff and some people are too precious about it.
It's also not just a Canterbury thing like you are determined to make it..... Quade gets booed everywhere and at the caketin the crowd will often boo Richie when he lines up a kick.
At least people are at the game and making noise.

FWIW Broad did not edge it to slip. He got a tickle to the keeper who dumped the catch which was scooped up by slip.

Take the Greg Chappell example. The underarm even had PMs from both sides essentially calling him and the team cowards. How is he regarded in Oz and the cricketing world now? I noticed that Pakistani bowler who was banned for two years for being involved in spot betting is back in the team. The comms don't go on about how he is a dirty cheat and the crowd didn't seem to let him have it that I recall. Part of the problem is that he was such a very good player, and so the behaviour coming from him has even harsher repercussions than if he was the young guy that did the deed and had the sugar in his pocket (Bancroft?). I think all of it blows over eventually
Greg Chappell is regarded as a batting legend ( rightfully so ) who also cheated ( again rightfully so ).
Based on that not sure if he's in the Border, S Waugh, Ponting pantheon. @NTA thoughts on this ?
Smith may retire with a test average over 60 which puts him in his own bracket of modern day greats but the cheating shit will ALWAYS be mentioned with him I suspect.
-
Greg Chappell wasn't cheating - underarm was well within the bounds of the law. I'm invoking what I call the Ruchie McCaw clause here, so line up and take it in turns to suck it
-
Broad edged the ball and didn't walk, so is that the defining moment of his career? Certainly he got the booing of a lifetime from Aussie fans. Overall he'll be remembered for that well behind some of his amazing spells that won Ashes matches.
-
If Smith is part of a team that wins this CWC, for some it won't matter. For me, I won't care. He did the crime, did the time. Boo him if you like - I'm pretty sure it doesn't affect his play.
-
Plenty of actual fucking cheats out there who didn't get punished, like any Pakistani or Indian home umpire / administration in the 80s and 90s, as well as rugby refs across the globe prior to professionalism
So, overall, I think to remember Chappell and Smith in the same breath has a very slim relationship, but maybe that is the effect of time.
Certainly no kiwi will ever forget underarm.

Twas no tickle - it glanced off the keeper's glove but was still a think old edge (yes I just watched it again!)

To be fair and balance out all my Haddin/Watson hate I do have to admit kiwis went waaaaaayyyyyyyyy over the top with the whinging about underarm. Anyone would think we were English.

@NTA will happily cling to the fact that it was within the rules, but it fell into that beloved but it's just not cricket category
The reaction probably carried on for too long, mostly because it was like shooting fish in a barrel, but it generated some great one-liners at the time...

Yeah but itβs incredibly tame compared to the blatant cheating of today.
-
Smith fucked up by not stamping out the cheating when he caught a sniff of it, and by not playing a straight bat afterwards. But he got shit guidance from Oz cricket alongside his own poor judgement. He's def served his time and I wouldn't boo him... Warner on the other hand...

How about good old Symonds not walking in the 2009ish India Aus New Years test. Steve Bucknor had a shocker - the edge almost went to first slip, and we could hear it in the stand!
