People will take the chance to climb into you. Sport is a bit pantomime theatre - paying spectators are allowed to boo villains, and everyone is welcome to 'tut tut' them in response. I'd boo Quade as much as the next bloke, and abuse (professional) referees, opposing teams, banter with supporters nearby - it's one of the reasons to go to live sport.

People will take the chance to climb into you. Sport is a bit pantomime theatre - paying spectators are allowed to boo villains, and everyone is welcome to 'tut tut' them in response. I'd boo Quade as much as the next bloke, and abuse (professional) referees, opposing teams, banter with supporters nearby - it's one of the reasons to go to live sport.
Reminds me of a mate of mine who is from Greymouth ( massive league country ). He told me a group of his mates came up for the sevens and booed Henry Paul when he was playing for England.....same blokes apparently saw him up Courtney Place later that night and came up to him wanting selfies etc and he said something along the lines of "Fuck off, you pricks were booing me when I was warming up!"

The comms don't go on about how he is a dirty cheat and the crowd didn't seem to let him have it that I recall. Lots of other teams get caught for tampering and you can't tell me that it is the work of one mad player each time. Part of the problem is that Warner was such a very good player, and the aussies have form for being total carnts, and so the behaviour coming from him has even harsher repercussions than if he was the young guy that did the deed and had the sugar in his pocket (Bancroft?). Smith cops it because he was the leader of the evil empire. I think all of it blows over eventually

Smith may retire with a test average over 60 which puts him in his own bracket of modern day greats but the cheating shit will ALWAYS be mentioned with him I suspect.

Better example is perhaps Warne.
Dealing with a match fixer? Sure it was just weather information...
Caught taking drugs? Sure your mum gave it to you to lose weight...Warney. Legend. And rightfully so.
Chappell on the other hand probably has a worse reputation than John Wright in the cricketing world just by virtue of his stint as Indian coach despite not being in the same stratosphere as batsmen.

Maybe kiwis are a bit harsher. I remember when we did our mythical best test XI. Now in my opinion Chris Cairns walks into the team, others were less convinced but I'm sure the match fixing ( which incidentally had not one thing to do with his test career ) means we judge him pretty harshly when his performances put him right in the very elite of our best ever cricketers.

On the Donald run out: Harsh to blame him, the ball barely trickled past the stumps at the non-striker's end, sensible to get back in your ground in that case.
On Greg Chappell: He abided by the rules as they were at the time - just as Broad did when he edged one to first slip and didn't walk.

Most sensible post I've read on that subject.... there's nothing wrong with a bit of booing. It's usually in good fun and adds to the occasion.

What's the difference in each case?
The difference is that the persecuted player has wilfully chosen to do something that sports followers know is beyond the pail. He's broken well established sporting mores and codes of conduct to do with sport.
All rugby players know that you can dish out cheap shots like Quade, and all rugby players know why you shouldn't. Same with Davey. Same with Smith in his leadership role, "tell them what you've done Cameron "
It's not like the societal norms of imprisonment and time served. It's sport or entertainment.
The Paki bowler actually served prison time for falling for a newspaper stunt. The match fixing wasn't even real.
Nobody is being booed who hasn't abused sports well entrenched sporting norms of behaviour. Nobody is having their societal rights refused. Part and parcel of being in the public eye and the riches that follow

Marshall saying anything even remotely sensible is laughable but I have to respectfully disagree. Time to forget about it and move on Canterbury....
