Reds much better than expected, and the Highlanders gave them plenty of chances.

Geez I said the Reds looked weak earlier in the thread but there are some future stars there with Rodda, Tupou and especially Jordan Petaia how good was he! He's like the Australian version of Rieko Ioane. Great effort from them with one player being over 25 in their side.

So, if the Crusaders intend to play by the rules regarding the limits on AB playing time over the first 3 weeks it is possible that they have saved up the non-playing time for the Reds game as the lesser of the first three.
Judging by today's showing (I haven't watched it), have they potentially misjudged what the Reds will bring?

No. Plenty of areas for the Crusaders to attack. The Highlanders really struggled at lineout and scrum time too.

It will be closer than they expected though.
