Waddle and Coney commentating Shell Trophy on the radio will always be my sound of summer.
Cricket stories (mostly) interspersed with irregular moments of cricketing action
Agree. Driving with them in the background is pretty awesome I must say.
Which kinda contradicts my argument about Nicholas cos as far ask know Waddle was never a player of any note.
But he isn't a wankstain like Nicholas so there you go.

I reckon people can fuck off with the "haven't played in tests, so can't be a commentator" line.
Test players bring some experience, and it's right to have some. But they also tend to be people who think that what they did was easy -- after all, they could do it. it's better to temper that with people who actually appreciate how difficult it is. Also people who don't regard the players on the field as mates, which rather too many recent players do.
Anyone suggesting only test players should comment -- I expect you to back up Marshall in all AB commentaries, on the basis he's played tests, so obviously knows the rules (!!) and understands play better than anyone else. The US has this right for football -- they employ pairs of commentators to do the main commentary. A voice, who calls the actual run of play, and then an ex-player who talks you through the football aspects of it all. They employ a rules expert who really knows the rules too.
(If you were after people who knew what was going on the inside you wouldn't employ ex-players -- you'd employ ex-coaches.)

I've already said I'm happy to stand corrected on that and it's Nicholas matey nature with any number of ex Aussie legends that irks me.
They're a real clique, he's just a try hard.
Marshall is so bad that he's funny. He's taken the Mexted ness to unprecedented heights
-
Doull and Marshall exemplify the role of the ex-pro in the commentary box. Marshall can pick apart a teams plans from a set piece like no one else I've ever heard, and Doull's insights on bowling techniques is great (he had a great discussion on seam position for bowlers with slingy actions).
But when they're talking general play they're prone to idiotic gaffs and over committing on hunches.
-
It's the same in all sports. Ex-pros can provide valuable about what is happening in a game for the players, or what one team is trying to do, based on a wealth of experience.
The problem is 90% of the ex-pros now in broadcasting, no matter what the sport, are completely unable to articulate that insight, and so fall back on a stream of waffle.

@NTA that shows you genuinely don't know Coney
He also agreed with your crowds about Richard Hadlee (allegedly)
Was a school teacher Married a Silver Fern who dumped him for Smokin Joe Stanley - whereupon Coney decamped to theatre school in UK where I think he still lives.

Yeah Coney and Hadlee had some real dust ups as I recall reading. Still, Bradman wasn't exactly liked by his teammates either and compared to the 80s NZ team Hadlee pretty much was Bradman such was the gulf in ability.
Didn't Hadlee win a whole bunch of cars and after selling and splitting the proceeds he kept the last one?

I understand this criticism. Now 9 doesn't have the cricket it seems it's a thing of the past, though.
Around a decade ago it seems 9 made a conscious decision to pivot to a more blokey, jovial, maaaatey style and Nicholas was forced to play into that. Geoff Lemon summed it up well in his piece a few years ago (a great read if you missed it).
When he is out of that environment (and a few others like Slater, Warne) then they can be quite cerebral and interesting.

Hang on, who's got which coverage? Do Foxtel and 7 both cover international cricket? And Foxtel additionally has the BBL, is that how it works? If so, we don't get the 7 coverage so theres zero differentiation to be made.
Foxtel and 7 both cover the tests, and the majority of Big Bash. ODIs just on Fox.
It seems you guys don't get the 7 coverage, which is a shame - for mine the commentary is vastly superior.

Is Brian Waddle the guy who thinks he's a warrior poet?
Suspect you think Jeremy Coney (former test captain)
Have heard a bit of Coney this summer and I think he's jumped the shark. Talk about Captain Obvious. Certainly his best days are well behind him.

@MN5 Just to revert to the commentators for a moment
Nicholas captained Hampshire for a decade or more during their most successful era and also was captain of England A. As @Catogrande said he was very much thought of as in the Brearley mould although a better batsman. He played during the Lamb, Gower, Gatting time. If he's played in a different decade or for a different country (e.g. NZ) he would almost certainly picked up some full caps.
He is / was also highly regarded as a commentator in the early days. I'm sure he won commentator of the year in the UK. I did find him much more palatable in his earlier career. His UK persona seemed more toned down but you know what. Her makes his living from being the host. If his employers want him to be a cheerleader then good luck to him for doing so. He's got a great gig why would he rock the boat.
As for your self-avowed ignorance about other commentators as @booboo said - it really does say it all. While Benaud was an absolute legend having perfected the art of saying very little there are some on that list who are at the very least his equal. Plus as I said above it seems the various Aussie (and others) want partisan ex-players rather than balanced nuance
I was living in England back in 1999 when Channel 4 took over the cricket coverage from BBC.
Their coverage was excellent, innovative for the time, with Mark Nicholas having retired the previous year from playing county cricket as the suave, late 30s, famous captain, frontman. He was great in that role.
After leaving UK didn't come across him again until Ch9 picked him up, where he makes me cringe. He doesn't suit the Warney v Chappelii macho circle jerk over who can suggest the most aggressive change the fielding captain just must do.
I like commentators like early Nicholas. In NZ i like Cumming who was similar, a 10 year domestic captain, but without the supposed captaincy fame that Nicholas had by the late 90s. I like that Cumming actually keeps a grasp of domestic cricket still and knows something about newcomers. cough, not-looking at you Mark Richardson. Styris and Doull have good internationalist knowledge of visitors due to their T20 commentating stints, (and Styris's until recent still T20 playing travels).
I like all the NZ TV commentators actually apart from Richardson. Maybe Smithy is starting to go off the plantation as well with his Hawkes Bay/CD bias.
On radio, with the decline of ball-by-ball commentary of Plunket Shield. I find the stints by the other younger ball-by-ball guys not called Waddle to be quite difficult listening. Garth Galloway is a natural when he does a Christchurch test, but he is a just a part timer.

Aussie cricket is actually a bit fucked at the moment.
Pretty lame bowling and fielding performance from a backs to the wall Aussie team in a face saving game.
Something (lots of things) ain't right in that camp.
It's all a bit weird to be honest, but this mob is playing unaustralian cricket
