As I touched on in the other thread. I hate Nicholas for trying to be one of the boys with the Aussies he commentates with who ranged from legendary to very good at test cricket back in the day.
You were an average county cricketer, you never played a test. Fucken know your place fluffybunny.
Yeah. Don't comment on cricket unless you've played tests.
Stuffs up Fernage in summer huh?
There's a difference between talking shit to equally pathetic cricketers on a forum to being paid lots of money as one of the experts.
Warnie, Tubby Slats, Gilly, Junior.....all varying degrees of Aussie cricket royalty.
...joined by some jumped up fuck from England who again, never played internationally.
Just doesn't sit right with me in terms of credibility.

Hand on heart I have no idea whatsoever who half of those guys are.
....and even still the other half just wouldn't hold the gravitas of a Richie Benaud or a Bill Lawry and maybe not even one of today's guys.

Kohli's stats in every form of the game are absolutely phenomenal. He's put a bit of daylight between himself and the next best.
Steve Smith being banned does help somewhat but can't argue Kohlis stats being ridiculously good especially in ODIs

You're comparing TV pundits and talking heads to radio commentators - apples and oranges - some of those names on that list are not in the same league - but Agnew, CMJ, Johnston, Arlott, Maxwell and Waddle are/were the voice of cricket for many, particularly for those that don't have access to subscription TV - I tend to listen to commentary rather than watching because I trust those commentators to be accurate, for the part impartial and their analysis could be on point and incisive. Benaud was just a God of TV comms.

I agree with all of that I guess Nicholas's awful persona helps reinforce my point, at least to myself.

Nicholas is so much better away from brioadcasting from an australian audience but my goodness he's not a patch on most radio commentators - hell I'd put the Cricinfo ball by ball guys ahead of him.

Second para yes they do. Seriously.

Back on topic ...
.. anyone watch how easily India ran down 3-hundy?
9 and a but an over with 12 to go. Kathik and Dhoni never took a risk and ran it down with 4 balls to spare.
The only time it looked like a potential wicket was a near run out on the winning run.
Everything else just no risk, proper cricket. 9s an over with zero risk.
Beautiful to watch.

What do yo uthink of Bryan Waddle? Serious question - I don't think commentators need to have top level experience to be great.
You have to respect Wads for the sheer amount of Black Caps cricket he has had to...uh...endure.
Wads saying "down towards the boundary" will always be the sound of summer for me. Like other great ball by ball commentators like Agnew and Bhogle he can call it straight but is happy to get lost in the weeds in the middle session on day three of a test. Makes a good foil for Coney too, who NTA points out can be overboard with others.
Some of the best commentary I've heard was the 2007 World Cup during the pool stages, Wads literally called the whole game start to finish and Ian Smith would join him out of sympathy for most of it in between his TV commitments. It was two guys just trading stories about past World Cups, Windies tours, Hadlee the lot.

I can confirm that's definitely a Coney trait.

@MN5 Just to revert to the commentators for a moment
Nicholas captained Hampshire for a decade or more during their most successful era and also was captain of England A. As @Catogrande said he was very much thought of as in the Brearley mould although a better batsman. He played during the Lamb, Gower, Gatting time. If he's played in a different decade or for a different country (e.g. NZ) he would almost certainly picked up some full caps.
He is / was also highly regarded as a commentator in the early days. I'm sure he won commentator of the year in the UK. I did find him much more palatable in his earlier career. His UK persona seemed more toned down but you know what. Her makes his living from being the host. If his employers want him to be a cheerleader then good luck to him for doing so. He's got a great gig why would he rock the boat.
As for your self-avowed ignorance about other commentators as @booboo said - it really does say it all. While Benaud was an absolute legend having perfected the art of saying very little there are some on that list who are at the very least his equal. Plus as I said above it seems the various Aussie (and others) want partisan ex-players rather than balanced nuance

@Hooroo I think it's a bit rich to criticise Nicholas when you look at some of the knobs that commentate here in NZ
I agree. In saying that, a lot of people don't like Simon Doull but I also think he is a good commentator.
Kerry O'Keefe is better for radio as it suits his waffle where it doesn't work so well on TV. Doesn't help that he get's seated with a couple of morons who don't get it
