As I touched on in the other thread. I hate Nicholas for trying to be one of the boys with the Aussies he commentates with who ranged from legendary to very good at test cricket back in the day.
You were an average county cricketer, you never played a test. Fucken know your place fluffybunny.
Yeah. Don't comment on cricket unless you've played tests.
Stuffs up Fernage in summer huh?
There's a difference between talking shit to equally pathetic cricketers on a forum to being paid lots of money as one of the experts.
Warnie, Tubby Slats, Gilly, Junior.....all varying degrees of Aussie cricket royalty.
...joined by some jumped up fuck from England who again, never played internationally.
Just doesn't sit right with me in terms of credibility.

What do yo uthink of Bryan Waddle? Serious question - I don't think commentators need to have top level experience to be great. Also, Jim Maxwell and Jonathan Agnew ... top quality commentators who weren't legends of the game.

Having met him I can confirm he is cantankerous old bugger but fair call....he is good on the wireless.
Perhaps I'm using my own argument to reinforce the point purely cos Nicholas is such a complete wankstain.
-
The difference between Waddle,Maxwell, Agnew versus Nicholas is that the former are radio ball by ball comms where word pictures are everything for the audience. Nicholas is supposedly in the role of comms for TV where nobody has seemed to heed the words of Richie Benaud - let the picture do the talking - the former players are there for analysis and colour based on the their experience - Benaud had the gravitas of being a great of the game who not only was a student of the game but had a fine grasp of the English language and media techniques. Nicholas is neither of those things despite having being placed in the central role of Benaud.

Nicholas' problem isn't that he didn't play test cricket. It is that he is a massive bellend.
I think it's more that he's nothing more a cheerleader. For Australia.

@MN5 377 first class matches, 351 list A
That might be more top level cricket than anyone in NZ
Get stuck into his commentary by all means but the facts of his cricket experiences fucks all over your feelings 😀
He was also much admired for his captaincy - a bit like Mike Brearley, a better skipper than player. Suggests he knows his stuff though.

@shark I think you need to differentiate Fox from Channel 7.
I found the Channel 7 test match commentary to be pretty good. A nice departure from the blokey bloke Channel 9 coverage, with a few foreign voices and good analysis from Trent Copeland. In the breaks they bought in journos like Gideon Haigh and Peter Lalor for some high-brow cricket chat, which I very much enjoyed.
Whereas the Fox guys went down the blokey route, with Waaarrrney leading the way.
Hang on, who's got which coverage? Do Foxtel and 7 both cover international cricket? And Foxtel additionally has the BBL, is that how it works? If so, we don't get the 7 coverage so theres zero differentiation to be made.

Kohli's stats in every form of the game are absolutely phenomenal. He's put a bit of daylight between himself and the next best.

Hand on heart I have no idea whatsoever who half of those guys are.
....and even still the other half just wouldn't hold the gravitas of a Richie Benaud or a Bill Lawry and maybe not even one of today's guys.

Steve Smith being banned does help somewhat but can't argue Kohlis stats being ridiculously good especially in ODIs

You're comparing TV pundits and talking heads to radio commentators - apples and oranges - some of those names on that list are not in the same league - but Agnew, CMJ, Johnston, Arlott, Maxwell and Waddle are/were the voice of cricket for many, particularly for those that don't have access to subscription TV - I tend to listen to commentary rather than watching because I trust those commentators to be accurate, for the part impartial and their analysis could be on point and incisive. Benaud was just a God of TV comms.

I agree with all of that I guess Nicholas's awful persona helps reinforce my point, at least to myself.
