What happens if Gatland's Wales do better than Schmidt's Ireland at the WC?
Does Gatland go to the top of the class?
No... Gatland shat the bed with his Cheika-esque behaviour during Lions tour.

An Irish loss to SA in the QFs is a real possibility.
Does Gatland go to the top of the class?
Gatland has to be in the mix. Henry wasn't the flavour of the month at NZR when he left for Wales but eventually got the AB job.

What are the chances of a Schmidt Garland co-op?

Slim to none, and Slim just left town.

Joe Schmidt's Ireland probably have the most identifiable style in World Rugby. It's a simple game plan. If you are in your own half, you put up contestable box kicks. As soon as you get in the other team's half you keep the ball. In defence, you rush up and try not to concede penalties.
It is effective for Ireland but a lot of fans wouldn't like it if he tried to coach the All Blacks like that. It is a lot different trying to coach Ireland and trying to coach us - mostly in terms of expectations. Schmidt's All Blacks could either be a super side. We could develop the ability to play smart rugby and create more balance between trying to play at pace and trying to maintain pressure. The other side of the coin is that we could get drawn into close games and lose our attacking prowess.
Is that a style he is known for or is he simply making the best use of the cattle he has available?
Not sure. He has only coached Leinster as a head coach otherwise.
We have three decent choices.
Schmidt has only Leinster and Ireland. Which he has turned around. Massively.
Rennie has Manawatu and Chiefs.
Robinson has Canterbury and Crusaders. U20s too. But Canterbury and Crusaders are almost joined at the hip.
I don't see Schmidt's lack of track record being a big deal between the three.

I for one heartily endorse Ian Foster
This has been the most entertaining couple of weeks on the Fern in years.
Imagine what a couple of years of just terrible results will be like? I won't have to do real work, like ever!!

@mariner4life Is there a downvote.....sigh

Schmidt followed Cheika who won the EC himself. Riding on his coat-tails?
Rennie has Manawatu and Chiefs.
And Wellington. Their last NPC win in 2000 was under Rennie.

My reading of the situation is that Schmidt will stay in Ireland. This has been a crafty news management by the IRFU.
Why the need to be crafty?
-
My guess is he’s leaving and IRFU is continuing to negotiate and sweeten the pot.
Could be an auction. Reminds me a little of the Nike contract offer for the ABs kit all those years ago, when we were CONVINCED they were getting the contract, and then at the 11th hour Adidas swooped in and gave the better offer and surprised us all. So I won’t be the slightest bit surprised if Ireland retains him or (god forbid!!) some desperate sad-sack outfit like the Wallabies throw millions under his nose and offer to put the wife and kids on the payroll, too.

How long is Foster and McLeods contracts? Could these have bearing on any decision he (or anyone else) makes?
