I actually think the main reason he got tinned was the availability of Graham Henry.

We were then undone by an obsessive opposition coach who studied the shit out of us and worked out a gameplan to beat us in a knockout competition.

I think mor ethe second than the first.

Mitchell was dropped because he was a pain towards public, sponsors and his employers, and in the end a failure to achieve his main goal.

In retrospect was happy to see the back of him frankly. And I was a huge defender of him during his tenure. Just so divisive.

He's never really achieved much since. Or before when you think about it.

Did play against him. 94 3v4 club play off (Elimination Final?) for Putaruru v Fraser Tech and by fuck he was good. Pretty much the difference in the game. So quick in what he did.

I hated him, he was a loon from the beginning. He got promoted before he was anywhere near ready on the basis of one year with the Chiefs. When we were had those big wins that @MajorRage mentioned you could tell he'd just taken the Blues gameplan after playing near 10 man rugby the year before. (But, as I've mentioned many times he forgot that you need forward dominance to play that style).

As I thought he was a conman early on I called our exit from the RWC in 2003.

From an outsiders POV it looked like he was trying to stamp his own mark on the thing with some curious selection decisions. If they don't come off and you lose something big, then repercussions would not be much of a surprise.

Mitchell got lost on his journey.

I remember him trying to convince a sceptic press corps that Joe McDonnell was an explosive prop with massive potential.

He made some stupid selection decisions for his RWC squad. Ben Atiga? Really?

Every coach has made “stupid” selections (from a fans perspective). Look at Hansen, we have a guy starting a test tomorrow at blindside that has hardly played any Super rugby.

Hansen may yet be right, difficult as that seems now.

There's also the quantity of dodgy decisions. Hansen's good to bad ratio is high. Mitchell's was much lower, at least IMO.

From the outside looking in , the selection of the squad in 03 appeared to be based around his starting 15 ,

And little thought for what if we lost players through injury

He was kicked for being a grumpy twat, esp with the press, not poor coaching/results.

I don't believe his coaching didn't play a part in it, we folded like a cheap suit in a game we should have won. Plus, any fool could see he didn't have a plan of his own, he rolled out the 02 Crusaders game plan in his first year and the 03 Blues in his second.

Shouldn’t the All Blacks win every game?

He chose Richie McCaw and Dan Carter though. I'm no expert but I think those two did ok.

I freely admit it though. Others here get caught in their own hubris.

Pity the game isn't played in the afternoon then!

Looks to be about 8C at kickoff.
