Like Van der Merwe apparently. So it would be one of those “ tightrope blowjobs” ie you’re all good as long as you don’t look down .

Six weeks is probably too long - but lets leave the wankerish sledging in cricket.
It's been a front row tradition for ever. This isn't some new thing that has just started
Pffft, like any front rowers have the mental capacity to come up with a retort, let alone the original sledge.
But to be serious for a second, racial taunting used to be a part of that tradition too ... I'm pretty sure it isn't now.
fuck man, that's a long bow to draw.
Why? If an excuse for it is because it's "tradition", then part of that tradition was racially sledging, pretty short bow I would think.
I just don't see what it adds to the game?
It's not even in the same ball park. Ignore rugby for a second, abuse/banter between guys is just part of growing up.
It's important to learn how to deal with it, and not "cry to mommy".
The best response to shit talk is to win the game/smash them in a tackle (second is theoretical from my point of view...)
Something else you learn as a 'guy' growing up is that you don't need to abuse people and you should pick your time for banter. Young guys learn to banter amongst their mates, and that's all good, but try it with some guy you don't know at the pub and you're liable to wind up with a fist in your face. I think the first priority should be teaching young guys not to be twats then you can focus on how they deal with others being twats.
I'm not arguing against your response to shit talk, but personally I think there's no need for that stuff in rugby and clearly WR feels the same way which is why they're trying to stamp it out - they likely see it as a slippery slope to verbal abuse.
These guys are about to embark on professional careers (in fact most of them probably already are professionals) and as such they'll need to learn the standards of their workplace - tough way for this particular guy to learn that lesson but everyone else is on notice.
@Rancid-Schnitzel So you noticed brown v white racism in rugby but you don't think there was a tradition of racial sledging in rugby? But, if you want a specific example have a read of Norm Hewitt's book - even still I'm not saying it's always prevalent in rugby, most rugby teams I was involved in weren't engaged in that or the stuff Hooroo is saying part of the tradition.

Yes I noticed it, but how do you arrive at the conclusion that it was a "tradition" and thereby somehow acceptable? It's a weird argument.
I'm not sure which rugby teams you played for but in pretty much every game I played in as an adult there was some sledging. Particularly if it was a tough game. The thing in rugby is that if you have time or energy to sledge then you're probably not playing hard enough.
The rest is typical boilerplate politically correct nonsense. This isn't any old "workplace". It's a fucking rugby field not an open plan office or meeting room.

Lets deal with the last point first, yes this is a rugby field, and the regulating body of the sport has laws aimed at preventing abuse on those fields. And quite clearly they've decided that this sort of carry on isn't what they want in the game (I agree with them, I don't see the fucking point of it and you're in trouble if you're game plan to win involves sex with mumma, bemuses me why people defend it). Now, you can bitch and moan about political correctness blah blah blah, but the fact is there are certain standards pro players need to accept even if it isn't an open plan office or meeting room - they can either pony up to it or carry on like a twat and get a ban.
As for the first point, I didn't say it was acceptable, something that is part of the tradition doesn't have to be acceptable, it just happened, and just because something happened in the past doesn't mean it has to continue in the future. Thankfully most of the racial stuff is gone from the game.

Just more of the same isn't it? The "victim" here could have responded with a comeback or sensibly just ignored a comment from a fat, inbred Boer. But no, let's make this look like a potential epidemic, a workplace hazard that could cause untold damage to the sport and the young men playing it. We have to nip this on the bud before the world collapses. Christ, nobody does hyperbole like you PC HRM types.
You still haven't provided any evidence whatsoever that racial abuse was a tradition and thus defended for being a tradition. You might want to dial that one back.

But, the decision from WR clearly shows that it's an issue for them. I personally wouldn't have given him 6 weeks even though I think it's stupid shit and we don't need in the game.
-
If the Ref heard it, then fair enough. Not too sure about a complaint from a player after the game - what happens on the field stays on the field and all that.
Let's keep the OTT Glen McGrath sledging shit out of the game, but it would have been better is the England captain had had a quiet word with his opposite number there and then or even after the game with an apology.

Dial what back? You're the one making baseless claims. Provide evidence for your claim or take it back. BTW when did I claim you said "good tradition"? You just made that up.
Oh I see, it's WR policy so it has to be good right? I mean, why would you ever question the policies or actions of a governing sports body. They always get these things right.
As for hyperbole, you (and those PC nutters like you) seem to think a random comment from a half-Neanderthal is such a tremendously horrible threat that a sanction of up to 12 weeks is necessary. That's fucking madness and it's very pleasant to see that you're clearly in the minority on this one.

Refresh my memory. Didn't Sarwan bounce back with a dig about Mcgraths wife who was dying at the time?
Glen shoulda probably not started what he couldn't finish.

Why don't you dial it back? Where did I say it was a 'good tradition'? It was stuff that carried on over time, you can pretend it didn't if you want.
WTF is a PCHRM - I get the PC bit, and quite frankly if not being PC is to carry on like a twat then I'm happy to be PC.
Who said the world would collapse, appears nobody does hyperbole like you (actually I don't know what the equivalent insult is) types? But, the decision from WR clearly shows that it's an issue for them. I personally wouldn't have given him 6 weeks even though I think it's stupid shit and we don't need in the game.

You're actually hopeless to have a civil discussion with because you always resort to PC/culture war bullshit (while claiming everyone else is engaging in culture wars).
I've said at least twice in this thread that I think the 6 weeks were too long, but go ahead and ignore that again. Furthermore, it doesn't matter if you or I believe the policy is wrong, what matters is what WR implement. Good rugby players don't have to give a shit about what you or I think but they do have to give a shit what the governing body thinks.
If you want to claim there was no racism in rugby then be my guest, I've given you a book by a prominent rugby player and you yourself have given us a story about anti white and Asian racism in rugby, but yeah it's all baseless.
I actually am completely bemused that allowing professional rugby players to make mumma jokes/insults on the field appears to be a hill so many of you are prepared to die on.

I actually am completely bemused that allowing professional rugby players to make mumma jokes/insults on the field appears to be a hill so many of you are prepared to die on.
For starters you drew the absurdly long bow between some sledging on the field being part of the game as some kind of justification for racial abuse. Despite repeated requests to back that up you just ignore it and just make stuff up, i.e. that I said there was never any racism in rugby. Seriously where tf did that come from? And you have the hide to say I can't have a civil conversation. Stop making shit up and actually try and back up what you claim before accusing others of wrecking a discussion.
As for the PC stuff, I call it when I see it. You said you're happy to own that. Fine, do that and stop crying about culture wars you claim don't exist.
And just because WR has a policy doesn't mean we just have to agree with it. That's the weakest argument of the lot.
I'm actually bemused that anyone would give a shit about a mamma's joke on a rugby field and thinks that a ban is fully justified. That's a weird hill to die on.
