Sounds like a right balls up already.
How the hell does that even work? Do pool a and b just have to suck it up and play an extra game? Or do pool c & d have to randomly play one team in their pool twice?Either way, totally unbalanced and unfair.
Makes a bit of a mockery of the whole thing before it has even begun. -
you'd think they of had more than 14 wanting in, so there must be a reason for it surely, rather than oh shit 14 doesn't divide into 4 evenly

Surely at least 2 more Saffa teams would have been keen. And/or the Argies. -

If true, then that's really disappointing. Also a bit harsh on the likes of DMac, Rieko Ioane, TKB, George Moala and Lima Sopoaga, who didn't get much game time during the EOYT, and JBarrett & Seta Tamanivalu (called up late) who didn't play at all for the ABs.
Edited to add that there's also a positive: second-stringers and players on the fringes of the ABs, who haven't made the squad (yet), will hopefully get decent game time. Players like James Lowe, Jordan Taufua, Brad Weber, Richie Mo'unga etc.

should come as no surprise really, the collective agreement states they must have the 12 week window after EOYT, been that way for a while hasn't it?

No, it's not surprising & once they're covered by the collective agreement, they can't get out of it, but that doesn't mean it's not disappointing for both the public and the players themselves. I think it's harsh, because some of these players have hardly played since Super Rugby. It must be very boring to just train and not play, and they must be chomping at the bit to finally get more game time, esp at a tournament like this. They'll now probably have to wait until the last PS game.

This is unsurprising. They have a contractually enforceable rest period. It's a competition that really does nothing for players other than gives fringe players an opportunity to display their skills or get injured.
The Brumbies have Andrew Walker and Larkham running out for them.

I guess the biggest issue is there have been players who wont be in attendance promoting it....although that is down to Duco.
at the end of the day, NZR with their collective agreement are looking after the players, and while players want to play, their bodies simply cannot play all year round, something has to give

It's a fucking sideshow anyway, and destined to be short lived. Any "competition" where the Brumbies can wheel out Larkham and Walker is a joke. Keep the ABs away from playing code in Brisbane in Feb.

Reading this article, it could possibly be a matter of personal choice of the player:
Duco Australia chief executive Rachael Carroll responded on Tuesday morning, saying that 10 players who featured in the tour would play in the tournament - including its ambassadors. Jerome Kaino, Israel Dagg, Ben Smith and Damian McKenzie have all been promoting the event, which takes place on February 11-12 at Suncorp Stadium. Carroll said they had received provisional squads from the New Zealand Super Rugby franchises and these players were included. "These players have indicated a strong desire to play in the tournament, and their Super Rugby clubs have selected them," Carroll said. "These selections are now subject to ratification by New Zealand Rugby. We are negotiating with New Zealand Rugby in good faith to confirm these selections." Carroll also said Duco had received provisional squads from Australian franchises and the tournament would have in excess of 20 Wallabies. The final squads will be confirmed early next month.The New Zealand Rugby players' collective agreement agrees a 12-week break from the game after an All Black's season ends. For the All Blacks who went on the northern tour that's not until after February 11-12, the weekend of the Tens at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. NZ Rugby players' association chief executive Rob Nichol revealed that all parties - NZ Rugby, the All Blacks, the player and their respective Super Rugby franchise - were all together in that agreement, so an All Black could play in Brisbane subject to their own personal circumstances. But NZ Rugby is focusing on the bigger picture in 2017, with the British and Irish Lions touring this year.Nichol said Duco were aware that All Blacks wouldn't be compelled to play in the tournament, which is the first of its kind. @Stargazer is down to the player, their franchise and NZ Rugby together.
Some of these guys would play every week if they could, which isn't ideal long term. I know a player that would play super rugby on a Friday and play club footy on the Saturday, and used to get in trouble, yet still did it.
Just heard that Duco claim that there are ABs named in some of the squads they have received, so maybe there is a breakdown somewhere and this is once again turning into an attempt at bashing NZR?
Pretty sure players fronting marketing for the 9s haven't fronted to play too.

This is obviously decisive if I'm even going to think about buying tickets. If guys like DMac, JBarrett and Fifita will be there then that's good enough for me. Only 2 NZ super teams playing in Brisbane this year.

I don't think it is a breakdown in communication. The franchises submit a team based on the players that put their hands up. At that stage they haven't had the approval (or rejection) from the NZRU.
Has anyone defined where the line is being drawn? I can understand no Dagg for instance, but Jordie Barrett? DMac?
