Our defence was as soft as custard it seemed. Around the rucks especially.
Worst ive seen our 2 locks play. BBBR especially ineffective in defence.
Gods knows how that ends up a 27 point margin.
Best I've seen Folau in ages.
Niggly game again, midway first half Whitelock and TJP seemed too distracted by the niggle.

There was something about 18 and not losing to Oz at Eden Park since 1986 that made that first 60 minutes more excruciating than normal.
After every game I make a resolution not to live post until the end of the game, and each week I'm dumb enough to forget...

My apologies. I thought you meant instead of TJP who I thought had being having a big match on defense just when it needed it..as a replacement, yes,agreed. A Smith running on would be awesome.
Eh, TJP's defence was good but I thought his clearance was pretty weak. He ended up throwing quite a few hospital passes that just put the backs under more pressure.

I think that was down to three things:

Phipps was passing off the ground a lot. Take out that step-and-a-half, and the line speed defence of the ABs wasn't quite as effective

Our forwards did a lot more carrying in close. Inside ball from Foley especially was paying dividends.

Quade and Foley as dual playmakers tends to leave you with 2 guys marshalling 4 runners in the previous games we played. Foley as the lone playmaker is 1 guy marshalling 5 runners. Our lines on attack were a lot better and held up the defence a bit as they had to think about which options they needed to call.
That said, the silly little offloads and some great cover defence by TJP were the difference between us getting clean breaks, and us getting clear. Contrast that to our lack of pace in taking the ball carrier to deck, and the ABs getting offloads away off the deck or as they're going down.
Skill level still a big chasm.

Reckon you would have smacked any other team with that performance Nick. The big guys made heaps of metres (including Moore), Phipps was accurate and Foley had an excellent game (he has to stay at 10. Fuck Cooper off). But your kingdom for a 12!

That should have been a try to Aussie. Dhp - his line could be a perfect run to the outside of the ball carrier. It's shit, it's a try.
Matt Todd. Shit hot. Arguably best game by an AB 7 this year.
Perenara - good player can't pass.
Cruden always tries to get a bit too clever off the bench. Always a dumb chip kick or two.

Yeah.... Hodge wasn't as effective as I wanted him to be. He had a clean shot on Savea late in the game as The Bus was catching the ball. Most times you want a bloke Hodge's size and balance to cut him in half. Got bumped.
The three-quarter line had about 20 caps between them before the game. Hope they learned a lot...

Having watched Phipps both win and lose games for the Tahs in the last few years, it has been an interesting pattern. The problem is its real fucking chicken-and-egg stuff
When he's passing off the ground, the forwards roll through, so he keeps doing it. When they're not going forward, he steps and prevents them rolling through. So he keeps doing it...
If I was coaching him, the first thing I'd have him do is tie 20kg weights to his ankles and make him do ruck drill for twenty minutes.
Make that twenty minutes each side.

DHP changed his line, obstructed a defender who by that stage only had the ankle tap as a valid option.
Complete dunce. He needs to find a corner to sit in.
Dhp should drop by the refs changing room and apologise that his stupidity is going to deflect some ill informed bile their way in the afterwash.

Todd was a genuine nuisance, but I thought he was fortunate a couple of times, with his elbows on the ground or his weight on another player in the ruck-thing. Mainly though, he got himself into position to be a nuisance, so he gets the credit for that, and getting the penalties.
Both sides were a bit inaccurate on their own ball at ruck time. We just didn't do enough.

I hope so, otherwise it was a monumentally stupid decision to sub him. Yes his goalkicking was pants and he deserves a smack for that, but he's still the best attacking player out there.
IMHO Cruden should either start or not be in the 23. He isn't a great bench player, and I reckon Lima S offers more. Better goal kicker too.
