@Virgil said in Aaron Smith naughty boy?:

Can only assume this guy doesn't like rugby, would anyone on the fern (excluding NTA and co obviously) do what he did?

After reading that I've just realised his identity.

The anonymous coward has only come out with the apology due to the comments from the law expert that the couple could be sued. I do hope that Smith takes them to court for this.

Just wishful thinking but wouldn't it be grand if the girlfriends family sued all and sundry?

so them outing Smith and his friend hasn't been as anonymous as we are lead to believe, otherwise why exactly are they suffering?

If totally anonymous they would be sitting back going, thank f@ck no one knows it was us!

Futile attempt to garner a shred of sympathy?

luckily the anonymity of being a 'source' for jouranlists provides them some form of privacy, unlike walls and a locked door on a toilet.

Anonymity is given away far too easily by journalists these days. I'm sick of reading stories where a subject only peripheral to the story is someone who ''did not want to be named'' but then casts all sorts of aspersions on the central character of the story.

    And I'm in the industry!

@Smudge Yeah. Far too many publications get away with 'a source close to' or 'an insider' 'or a friend/relative who did not wish to be named' these days. Little in the way of fact checking from a neutral perspective. So much for the fourth estate.

Small airport, female employee, photo of her from behind.. All her friends and family will know exactly who it is. How is that fair?

That kind of comes with the territory when you do something like that in a public place with a high profile place, no?

Sure you don't factor in the media shit storm, but you can't protest that your privacy is being invaded when you gave that up to kick this whole thing off. Could easily be sprung bad and face employment or police charges or be spotted by a family or friend and net the same result.

She isn't a victim and doesn't deserve name suppression, at the same time outing who this lady is adds little value to the story and the media have been pretty responsible IMO of not making this lass a household name.

Much like that couple in the office building window in Christchurch a few years back, when you take risks like that it isn't incumbent on the media to stop close friends and family from putting two and two together. It is awfully nice of them to not blast your name everywhere - if this had occurred in the UK she would be front page not Smith.

This couple are first class cowards. The husband doesn't wear the pants in that relationship. His wife sounds like a complete cow. What did they think would happen by releasing it to the media seriously...ignorant. He's now gone on to say sorry and out the female as airline staff!! Shut up man you are making it worse!!! How incredibly stupid. If his wife is so righteous and moralistic she should have no problem revealing her identity...

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/85264885/aaron-smith-witnesss-full-apology

"We have had a lot of (negative) attention this past week which is very, very scary...

"You can probably guess how much of a safety threat now it would be if we were identified and this is probably the issue we did not consider at the time. We did not consider the public backlash against us....

"Yes, I regret reporting it because it has had a much more serious outcome than expected.

"[My wife] does not, as she thinks that he and the rugby union needed to be accountable.

"She said we shouldn't have had to wait like peasants to use the baby's room so that an over-paid rugby player could entertain female company. She is still fuming.

"So, in short, we as are couple are split on this question but what's done is done now."

    THE APOLOGY

"I feel the need to apologise because I do not think Smith has deserved this much trouble. A slap on the hand was probably sufficient.

"We were expecting, at most, a tiny side article that no one would hardly even see."

Given the thread I am clearly in the minority here, but I kind of agree with the wife.

"She said we shouldn't have had to wait like peasants to use the baby's room so that an over-paid rugby player could entertain female company. She is still fuming."

Fair enough too. What a ridiculous thing to do given his profile, while flying with the team, when he has a partner who is therefore in the public eye as well.

Personally, I wouldn't go as far as recording it and giving it to the press if was there, but I don't think vilifying someone who does is reasonable either.

I feel like that's the first time we've been told they were waiting to use the bathroom after him? I wasn't under the impression that this is what happened.

@Milk Ah ok, to be fair I've mostly been relying on the thread to keep up with what's been happening. I guess disabled loos have baby changing facilities as well so it makes sense, and makes them come off a bit better than someone just randomly lurking outside a loo?

I'm not 100% sure, but I was just under the impression they watched them go in? Otherwise what made them get the camera out if they didn't know an All Black was in there.

The so called apology and the rationale (wife's) smacks of attempted damage limitation to me.

I can't for the life of me figure how they thought it would be nothing news....and to think that then decide to go straight to the media instead of to the NZRU who they supposedly think need to answer to this? Yeah, nah.

Waiting like peasants huh, methinks not quite. Dickheads.

Ha!! that is new information and different to their initial story, as was the concern about the woman being an airline/airport staff member.

Human brain is a weird and wonderful thing when you are trying to justify being a dick to yourself.... and the nation...
