@Duluth That Plummer grubber kick that Clarke latched onto was meant for TJ. It was one of our go to plays last season and it basically worked every single time. Good to see we haven't forgotten about it and will likely keep doing it through the season.

60% if the time it works every time.

The Farah Palmer Cup has its own "Ranfurly Shield": the JJ Stewart Trophy. It doesn't look like Canterbury are going to lose it to Wellington today, if the first 8 minutes are anything to go by (Canterbury has already scored two converted tries, one try by Cocksedge). The game is now on Sky Sport 1.

This is what the Trophy looks like (a bit boring compared to the Shield):

@Stargazer Crikey - no expense spared with that trophy!

Are those goal posts, as I suspect, solid gold? 🙂

@Chris-B Hmmm, I wonder who was in charge in 1991, when this Trophy was introduced. Must have been a cheapskate or someone with a bad taste for "art".

This is from a blog post from Kendra Cocksedge:

JJ Stewart was a former All Blacks coach and ardent supporter of women’s rugby in New Zealand. To acknowledge his contribution to women’s rugby, a challenge trophy was established in his name for New Zealand’s women’s provincial teams to play for.

Auckland had a stranglehold on the trophy for 22 years and it became a little forgotten about until Otago claimed it in 2013.

Since then, a whole new lease of life has been breathed into the trophy and it is now one of the most sought after prizes in women’s rugby in New Zealand.

Last year we were thrilled to claim the trophy when we defeated Counties Manukau on their home patch.

Just like the Ranfurly Shield in the Mitre 10 Cup, the JJ Stewart Trophy must be defended by the holder in all regular season home games.

Canterbury have been the holders since 23 September 2017.

I'm not sure that anyone else wants it.

@Stargazer Ah - it was made in 1991, when Women's rugby was in it's infancy.

I'd never heard of it before and assumed it was new. Was wondering how they thought they could roll out something so cheap looking in this day and age.

Full time: Canterbury Women 57 - 19 Wellington Pride.
Canterbury keeps the JJ Stewart Trophy. It will be on the line again on 21 September, when they host Manawatu.

That was the first game of the Farah Palmer Cup. Only three games this weekend, as Manawatu Cyclones have the bye and the Championship Division (only 6 teams) starts next weekend.

It looks like Junior Laloifi didn't make the cut. One of the few standouts for the Turbos last year. If he's not injured, another province who needs a winger/fullback should pick him up.

Look whose name I found on the 11 jersey of the Horowhenua-Kapiti team to play West Coast, last Saturday:

@Stargazer it’s amazing how many good players go unnoticed in the Heartland comp..James Last who plays for Buller and the NZ Heartland XV is bloody good player that runs the cutter really well.
Surprised he’s never been picked up by a Mitre 10 Cup team..if Marty Banks could make it out of Buller, I am sure Mike Lash could be just as successful..
Just not sure of his age.

@Steven-Harris About a year ago, I saw a twitter conversation between James Lash's uncle (Mike Lash, the referee) and someone else about this and I had the impression that James was happy with just playing Heartland for Buller and wasn't looking for a M10 Cup contract. He plays/played sevens for Ta$man as well.
