CMRFU Introduce a New Crest - About the Kaeaea
Some supporters may have noticed that, this year, the Counties Manukau PIC Steelers have a new crest which features the Kāeaea, being the New Zealand falcon. When the Steelers recently discussed who they represented and where their identity came from, it was found that crucial aspects of our identity were laying undiscovered. Knowing that identity and belonging are fundamental elements in the sustained success of a team, the Steelers coaching team researched our history and worked hard to identify what it means to be a Steeler and part of Counties Manukau Rugby.
The Steelers coaching team determined that the Kāeaea (which is a bird of prey that actively seeks out, strategises, and overpowers its target) encapsulates the values and character of a Steeler. The Kāeaea acts as the Kaitiaki (guardian) of the part of the Counties Manukau region where the iron sand lays at Karioitahi Beach (which is why steel is produced in the province) as well as the Waikato River and Manukau Harbour. As Kaitiaki, it is armed to protect and enhance our sea, sky and land.
With its world renowned speed, precision and spectacular strategies, the Kāeaea was deemed to be a powerful representation of Counties Manukau Rugby. With this in mind, the union developed a new crest that connects Counties Manukau with this prestigious guardian that represents key aspects of our identity.

@Duluth That Plummer grubber kick that Clarke latched onto was meant for TJ. It was one of our go to plays last season and it basically worked every single time. Good to see we haven't forgotten about it and will likely keep doing it through the season.

The Farah Palmer Cup has its own "Ranfurly Shield": the JJ Stewart Trophy. It doesn't look like Canterbury are going to lose it to Wellington today, if the first 8 minutes are anything to go by (Canterbury has already scored two converted tries, one try by Cocksedge). The game is now on Sky Sport 1.

@Chris-B Hmmm, I wonder who was in charge in 1991, when this Trophy was introduced. Must have been a cheapskate or someone with a bad taste for "art".

JJ Stewart was a former All Blacks coach and ardent supporter of women’s rugby in New Zealand. To acknowledge his contribution to women’s rugby, a challenge trophy was established in his name for New Zealand’s women’s provincial teams to play for. Auckland had a stranglehold on the trophy for 22 years and it became a little forgotten about until Otago claimed it in 2013. Since then, a whole new lease of life has been breathed into the trophy and it is now one of the most sought after prizes in women’s rugby in New Zealand. Last year we were thrilled to claim the trophy when we defeated Counties Manukau on their home patch. Just like the Ranfurly Shield in the Mitre 10 Cup, the JJ Stewart Trophy must be defended by the holder in all regular season home games.Canterbury have been the holders since 23 September 2017.
