Isn't this pathetic. 18 minutes late and all the articles about it. Boyd must be a complete fool to make such a big issue of it. Just have a quiet word and move on. Not treat them like naughty children. No wonder the team was flat against the Sharks. The players must have lost their respect for him and the team management

http://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/79906281/Hurricanes-stand-down-errant-All-Blacks-for-Super-Rugby-match-v-Reds

The Hurricanes are calling their decision to stand five players down from selection as a "one-out-of-10 offence with a 10-out-of-10 punishment."

Star players Julian and Ardie Savea, Cory Jane and Victor Vito, along with reserve prop Chris Eves, will watch Saturday's Super Rugby clash with the Reds from the Westpac Stadium stands after breaking a team-imposed curfew last week.

The five players are understood to have missed a prescribed curfew by 18 minutes, in Durban last Tuesday. Neither Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd nor captain Dane Coles would say what the curfew was, although Boyd noted that the quintet were back at the team hotel before midnight.
-

Give me strength. :Bang_Head:

You just can't do and hope to have a motivated team.

Boyd said the players had made a poor decision and the matter had been dealt with internally.

"Though some people may not see staying out late as being particularly serious, the team set their standards very high this year and everyone bought into that at the start of the season," Boyd said in a statement.

"We have a great bunch of guys in the squad and this was an isolated incident, but there are certain lines in the sand and when those lines are crossed there are consequences.

But thankfully Proctor is back. The midfield was poor last WE. Aso needs to be left at 2nd 5 to find his feet here rather than shifting him week by week. Surely they can find someone better than Gibbins though

Hurricanes: James Marshall, Jason Woodward, Matt Proctor, Vince Aso, Wes Goosen, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara, Blade Thomson, Callum Gibbins, Brad Shields, Michael Fatialofa, Vaea Fifita, Jeff Toomaga-Allen, Dane Coles, Reggie Goodes. Reserves: Motu Matu'u, Lonu Uhila, Ben May, Mark Abbott, Tony Lamborn, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Ngani Laumape, Willis Halaholo.
-

Only someone who isn't married would consider missing curfew by 18 minutes a minor infraction

Maybe. I will see how the team goes from now but if I worked for management who did this I would lose any respect for them

Its different if it was arriving back at 4 in the morning completely pissed. Or missing a flight etc. But Boyd seems to completely lack any common sense. What a fool. And the Canes management for going along with it.
-

out of interest, how late do you have to be before you are really breaking curfew?

-

so the team have an agreed time to be back, 22 of the 27 or so on tour make it back on time, but 5 don't, of which are all senior players, what example does that set:

1 - by them by being late

2 - by team management if they choose to dismiss the lateness as a minor discretion?
-

It depends on circumstances. But if I was the boss man I would just have a quite word with them. Or better still get someone else to do it. Just say take more care to get back on time. End of story

Although I do wonder why they have these silly rules. Fair enough the night before a game but most workers are not restricted in this way. Treat workers like children and surprise they behave like children. I know workers though in the UK who are reported for turning up even a few minutes late for work. But they don't also insist they get back home by say 11pm or else you name will be posted on the company intranet as naughty children
-

These guys aren't turning up to work at a bank (though see how you get on turning up 18 minutes late from lunch there), they are closer to being in the army.
-

Listening to Boyd, this was a decision by the team on the flight from Sydney to SA to set the curfews for themselves, he said they dont normally have them, they dont have a alcohol policy either.
-

what i heard it wasnt Boyd if that is true, as he didnt hear of it until Thursday...also they said they only had 27 on tour so couldnt do anything about it in SA.

I will see how the season pans out now. But surely we can all agree that Boyd has handled this very minor issue appallingly
-

I dont agree...this was a team enforced curfew, so one assumes the team would have discussed penalties for a breach of their curfews/rules, so maybe its the players you need to be criticising not Boyd?
-

I don't agree either, for the same reasons as TR

You sound like Jim Kayes, who has also tweeted multiple times how he doesn't understand there being a curfew & punishment.
-

The senior leadership group and the coaches obviously put a curfew in for a reason. I praise Boyd for sticking to his team protocols and I respect his decision.

It doesn't matter who you are. If you break the rules you deserve to be punished accordingly.

Too many times in the past there have been players in the Canes that have probably gotten away with such behavior and that is probably why we've always had a "lad" type culture.

I get a sense there is still a bit of that culture remaining in the Canes where guys like Julian Savea and Cory Jane walk around like they own the place.

That's where the Canes are different to the likes of the Chiefs, Highlanders and Crusaders in that they lack the discipline off the field which in turn leads to inconsistency on the field.

Whether you like it or not Boyd has done the right thing here. If the Canes are to be taken seriously they need to set high standards and if these standards are broken then punishments like these need to be implemented.

I really hope this minor indiscretion doe not ruin our season because that is not fair on the fans. If you look at the big picture though im sure the players will think twice about their actions. Hopefully they will make the right decisions in the future.
-
